Maybe just, uh, be guided by doing the opposite of what’s been done before and you might just pull up.

Today, the pure commission form of government is almost gone in Texas, though some cities still use a manager commission hybrid. The largest city in the United States to still use a form of the Galveston Plan is Portland, Oregon, but in 2025, Portland will be restructuring its municipal government. Yet the legacy of the Galveston Plan endures. From the days following the 1900 storm on Galveston Island, Galveston taught cities how to rebuild from tragedy and laid a foundation for modern city governance across the United States. Out of devastation came innovation, showing that communities can come together, adapt, and find a new path forward when faced with even the greatest challenges. The Galveston plan.

I don’t think Ted Wheeler is the correct person to teach anyone about anything.

Nice of kgw to give them air-time to pat themselves on the back for something they opposed two years ago. media-amnesia-itis. It’s a common affliction with corporate media.

Why are they all weepy about the ending of a dysfunctional, failed system? Get with the times, y'all.

Because city managers are a total scam and end up causing unprecedented harm to municipalities particularly in the form of screwing over regular residents in favor of oligarchs and out-of-towners, mega corps, and the like. They are unelected and have unprecedented control over city operations. At least, with elected officials, you can sack them at will. City Managers? Look across the country to the hellscapes they leave behind, as these chronic charlatans run about, flitting from municipality to municipality, wrecking havoc, screwing over the residents, and when the general public comes demanding "answers", the actually elected officials can only throw up their hands because they effectively have zero power to do anything about the unelected crooks in the pantry. Mark my words, the destruction of direct election of city leadership to be replaced by unelected city managers, will, ultimately, like it is in so many municipalities, help only oligarchs and real estate developers, while royally fucking over the poor and working class. But, that was always the objective with this. It was never about "efficiency", but about getting rid of the last major obstacle to the SF Tech oligarchy raiding the City of Portland for all itcs worth, causing the ALREADY unprecedented housing crisis caused BY the mass influx of private equity buyouts and FLOOD of affluent immigrants who should have stayed where they belonged. Techbros bake the WORST "neighbors". They destroyed the Black community, turned what was ALREADY the "whitest city in America" even "whiter". People who are just too ignorant to comprehend this need to shut the f up and mind their own damn business. 😒 This will be the beginning of the next great catastrophe for the working masses of the Portland Metro region. I just hope the loss of life haunts the morons who voted for this till their last dying breath. One thing would be to have established fixed districts vs the at-large system, like NYC and other historic municipalities where city leaders are elected via rank choice and proportional representation. But this is all to benefit a minority of private equity fucks like Blackrock and the like. It will not benefit the general public one iota in the long run BECAUSE the sorts of people who do this job, generally, are beholden to oligarchs and not the general public. The fact so MANY people are too willfully ignorant to comprehend this fact, and can't be bothered to walk down to city hall to actually learn how these cities, in fact, operate, is what has caused this "reform". It's a "reform" like Congress's "bankruptcy reform" that sold out creditors and the anxiety 5,000 year tradition of debt amnesty to the rentier oligarchy. Assuming you aren't, in fact, a bot too. Sure sounds like it with the name. 😑
