The recent constitutional amendment brings a significant shift to Pakistan’s political landscape. Now, the government will request the judges’ committee to submit three names, which will then be reviewed by a government committee to select the final candidate. This approach ensures greater transparency, similar to the system already in place for the military. With this change, the cycle of blame games will come to an end. Politicians will no longer be able to deflect responsibility onto institutions by accusing them of favoritism or interference. The system of lobbying and favoritism is being dismantled, even though some may still struggle to recognize this pivotal shift. Although a government with a two-thirds majority may attempt to appoint judges aligned with its interests, such a majority is rare in Pakistan. This means the era of one-man dominance in the judiciary or military institutions is effectively over. Overall, this amendment is a positive step forward for Pakistan. From now on, the challenges we face will be directly addressed within Parliament and the Senate, fostering true accountability and strengthening democracy.
