ज़िंदगी में बहुत फिल्में देखी हैं, मुगले आज़म, प्यासा, साहब बीवी और गुलाम ( गुरुदत्त) आवारा, संगम, मगर खामोशी देखने के बाद एक ही आवाज आई इससे बेहतरीन फिल्म नहीं बन सकती, कितनी बार देखा है याद नहीं, आज भी मेरी लिस्ट में पहले नंबर पर खामोशी ही है, पहली बार 1988 में देखी थी, मन अंदर से हिल गया था, कारण अदाकारी नहीं कहानी है, अदाकारी तो बहुत फ़िल्मों में अच्छी है, मगर जो औरत के दिल और दिमाग को पेश किया गया है, लाजवाब, बेमिसाल, ( सब कुछ देख लिया इसे देखने के बाद, तमन्ना नहीं इससे बेहतर देखने की इसको देखने के बाद,)

I am fortunate enough to watch Original version of this movie in Bengali(I think it's name is Deep jala jaaye). Suchithra Sen who acted in place of Waheeda was unmatchable. Waheeda's performance is very good but Sen's involvement in the character was so deep and she lived to the character.

A lot of people think this movie is about love only. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is a comment on a society where a certain class has it all and others are left to clear the mess they created. It is about ruthless "professionalism" clashing with profoundly pure human feelings of love and affection and genuine caring. It is about a deeply divided society where everything is expected from a poor nurse at her own cost. She ends up paying a huge price for her unprotesting silence(Khamoshi).. It is as if the silence is crying out for an outside voice to reach it in its anguish (Tum Pukar lo tumhara intezaar hai...). The songs and music have a lasting quality and will stay with you for a long time. I think this is one of the greatest movies ever made in Hindi cinema. And Waheeda Rehman is indeed one of the greatest actresses of all time.

Waheeda ji is in one of her incredible performance, outstanding. This is the remake of one of the best Bangla film -- Deep Jole Jaye -- based on a short story by a renowned Bangla writer Ashutosh Mukherjee. The iconic role of Waheeda ji was played by veteran actress Suchitra Sen. Before Hindi remake Khamoshi, the Bangla film was remade in Telegu, which was a great hit and Telegu actress Savitri got the National Award of Best Actress, for the same role which was played by Waheeda ji in Khamoshi. The movie wouldn't find justice, if Arun didn't support Radha. Waheeda Rahman was the only one who could justify Radha. Her powerful stance as Radha was impeccable.

Hemant Mukhopadyay is the best especially since he Produced, sang, and composed many Hindi and Bengali songs, such as with Khamoshi, Anupama, & Monihar. He was an excellent music composer, and Film Producer for his “Gitanjali Films”. Also, he knew to appropriately select himself to sing for Dharmendra, & Kishore Da to sing for Rajesh Khanna’s role for the song, “Woh Shaam”. Being a specialist myself in Psychotherapy, “Khamoshi” was an inspiration for me since childhood, and I trained in several inpatient Psychiatric facilities. Like Rajesh Khanna’s role as Arun having Acute Schizophrenia (known as Schizophreniform if less than 6 months), I saw many patients displaying paranoid delusions and hallucinations. A well-made film similar to the American made, “Lilith”, starring Warren Beaty, with reverse roles where he was the Therapist. ~ Dr. Sanjay Kumar

So well said. Hemant Kumar was, is and will forever remain a gem. Coming back to Lilith, I would say it is Lilith which is similar to Khamoshi and not the other way round. I say this because the Bengali original of Khamoshi i.e Deep Jele Jai ( Khamoshi for the most part is a pretty faithful frame by frame remake of DJJ) came out in 1959, while Lilith starring Warren Beatty came out five years later in 1964.
