My Sophomore year in HS, I had placed fifth chair trumpet, so I was on second part. We got this piece for our spring concert and I instantly fell in love with it, so much so that I really wanted to be first part for it. My only way to do that was to pass up two incredible players, one of them was a senior and the other a junior. I worked so hard to get a good enough grade to be moved up to third chair. I still think that piece was the cleanest performance I have ever been apart of. We ended up playing it at graduation that year as well, and at that point I had moved up to second chair, right behind the band director's pride and joy, a senior girl with exceptional skills. I will never forget the moment after we finished playing, she looked at me with teary eyes and told me to keep up the good work. This song made me realize how much music could move a person, and I can't help but think about that year when I listen to this piece. Now here I am, it's my senior year and I'm not even sure if I will get another high school concert to perform at, but all I can do is hope that I can have one last concert to send off my high school experience.

This is one of, if not my favorite band piece(s) ever! Ever since playing it in 9th grade honor band on tuba, I’ve come back to listen to it again and again. Every time I listen to 4:48 through the end, I get extreme chills from the beautiful eastern melody, especially when piccolo begins to play it. For some reason, though, my favorite part of that section is the never-ending snare drum rhythm; it allows a beautiful, smooth flow from the dramatic percussion-heavy section into the next.

I am a freshman in high school, and this is the most difficult thing I have played. It is taking so much work as an ensemble to make this sound right. We have been taking most of the piece super slow to perfect it.

If your band is successful, then congratulations, this is a difficult piece to play musically. I, personally have no trouble, because i play the Bari sax part. As an ensemble, there is a lot of work that needs to be done to make this piece sound the way it is supposed to..

Can someone please describe the story for this? Me and my band have been trying to figure out what parts of the music symbolize
@DONTMESSWITHRUSSIA6 жыл бұрын
So figure. Beginning “I am Genghis Khan! Let’s go conquer some stuff” and after that. Imagine his army on horseback’s traveling through the Chinese country side. And the slower part of the piece is a village that is peaceful, a small village with fishermen and and khans caravan is traveling through it, with no intent of hurrying a single thing. With khan admitting his empire. And after that. Continue to ride on horseback’s through the country dude and when you get to the percussion heavy part (120 I believe) You are fighting it out. Conquering the land you want to grow. And the end. Well. Finish up you conquest. With the melody being the backing part of it. That’s how my band director explained this to us and I’m in percussion.
