If you multipled 1 girl (which is the correct number of girls to add in relation to boys to get a ratio of 1:2 aka 4 boys for every 7 plus 1 girl) by 5 groups (or the number of groups of students in the total of 55 students) you'd get the correct answer of 5 girls. But I do agree, there's got to be an easier way of setting up the equation to get this answer from start to finish.

And actually, this person is correct based on how Khan worded the question when first trying to tackle the problem. He stated "How many girls do I need to add for the ratio to become 1:2?" To make the originally stated ratio of 4 boys : 7 girls equal to the ratio of 1 boy : 2 girls, the correct answer IS one girl (4 boys divided by 7 plus 1 girls reduces to a 1:2 ratio). I think what the narrator was actually trying to ask is "How many girls do I need to add TO THE TOTAL NUMBER OF STUDENTS for the ratio to become 1:2? Hence all disciplines (like math and English) being paramount. Also, there are more direct ways of setting up this equation as previously mentioned.

you know that its 4:7, you add one to 7 to make it 8, you have 5 groups, 5x1=5, and you see 5 groups cause 4:7 total is 11 people, 11/55 is 5, so yeah

Thats an awkward way to solve this, you can just multiply the new ratio so that the boys numbers match, 4:8, and then extract the difference, 0:1, so that is 1 girl more per each 4+7 = 11 ppl, total 55/11=5, 5x1=5 girls
