For those that want the improper fraction to be a mixed number: With 11/9 take the denominator and divide it by the numerator. 1 with a remainder of 2 will be the answer. Keep the 9 as the denominator. The remainder 2 is now the numerator. Add the 1. 11/9 = 1 2/9

A helpful shortcut. 1. represent each repeating digit by 9 and each non repeating digit by 0 in the DENOMINATOR 2. the NUMERATOR is the difference between the number formed by the decimal digits and the number formed by the non repeating digits E.g. 0.12555555555 = 125 - 12/900 = 113/900

The denominator of any fraction isn't infinity or any number constructed from infinity. For repeating decimals their denominator will be the product of some amount of 9's(9^x) times the product of some amount of 10's(10^y). Put that together and you get 9^x * 10^y. You also seem to be confusing the number of digits used to represent a number with its place on the number line. .3752 and 1232 are very far away from each other despite being made up of the same digits. (continued)
@Xireal2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I needed this for my assignment 😅
@jeremymiller418911 жыл бұрын
In the same vein pi and .777... are nowhere near infinity despite being infinitely long. This means you're able to do arithmetic operations on them. They're not infinitesimal either or else you wouldn't have those place holders to dig your feet into. 0.7777.... is between .7 and .8, between .77 and .78, etc. Infinitesimals aren't constructed from the top down like decimals are. if you have one recurring number (e.g. 0.7...) than the fraction would just be the recurring number over 9 (e.g. 0.7... = 7/9) this works for any number. (if you get 9/9 thats equal to 1)

it does work with 9. The fraction is 1/1. [1 IS EQUAL TO 0.999...] Repeating decimals do repeat infinitely. That proof just works better with 9 because you already start with the fraction 1/1 which is equal to 1 and is equal to 0.999... And sorry if thats not what your asking...

You can construct real out of Cauchy sequences composed of rational numbers. Any sequence that converges to 0 is 0 in the real number system and any sequence that diverges to infinity isn't a real number. The sequence that converges on 7/9 or .777... is neither of these so .777... is a real number.

For all those who said 0.999999 equals 1, Guys I am sorry but it's not true, learn physics and you will understand there is a big deal of difference, otherwise we would say 0.88888 equals 0.89, the moment you start approximating you lose your scientific foundation, in a nutshell what I want to say is, this is a great learning method but it has a flaw and can't be claimed to be mathematically correct

+RMTM You can double check by using the fraction that you got as a result, as a division. So for example, dividing 11 by 9, like in Sal's second example. It should get you the original answer.
