Algebra I on Khan Academy: Algebra is the language through which we describe patterns. Think of it as a shorthand, of sorts. As opposed to having to do something over and over again, algebra gives you a simple way to express that repetitive process. It's also seen as a "gatekeeper" subject. Once you achieve an understanding of algebra, the higher-level math subjects become accessible to you. Without it, it's impossible to move forward. It's used by people with lots of different jobs, like carpentry, engineering, and fashion design. In these tutorials, we'll cover a lot of ground. Some of the topics include linear equations, linear inequalities, linear functions, systems of equations, factoring expressions, quadratic expressions, exponents, functions, and ratios.
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.
For free. For everyone. Forever. #YouCanLearnAnything

Seriously? It's that simple?! It's taken me forever to figure this out and all you have to do is balance it out and isolate the variable. Great video, really helped! Thanks!

ok, so im not suppose to be learning algebra but im just studying it and want to learn it. So, I don't get why you subtracted or added some number in both sides... Why cant u use another number? why cant we subtract and not add?
@holdthatlforluigi
@holdthatlforluigi 8 жыл бұрын
You can use both subtraction and adding. The idea is to remove all the 'baggage' so that x, p or whatever variable you are using is the only thing left on both sides. Some examples: 7+ c > 21 We want 7c to just become c, so we must subract 7. We will also subtract on the other side to keep the inequality true. c > 14 f - 5 < 98 Because 5 is being subtracted, you must add it back to get f f < 93 Hope this helped... If not, I apologize.

There's a common, counter-intuitive error at 2:50. Sal says that 39.99 repeating is in the solution set of x < 40. This is not true. 39.99 repeating is not close to 40, it's exactly 40. A good, short, discussion of this counter-intuitive idea can be found in UMKC's College Algebra Lecture 1 beginning at 1:15:10 watch?v=1Amt_-uB9QQ
