so basically all the digits in a number are significant except for the zeros in front of a number and when there are no decimals, the zeros at the end of a number

Sig figs just seem so arbitrary to me. So if you add a decimal, the zeros suddenly count? I haven't yet understood the pragmatic purpose of doing this (other than passing chemistry).

Adding a decimal means that the value was measured with more accuracy, allowing your result to be more precise.

a rule of thumb i use when deciding on when to keep zeros is this: if you were to convert a number to scientific notation the leading zero's naturally fall away. yet the trailing zeros you would have to deliberately leave off - meaning that they are significant. for example .010400 --> 1.0400 e-2 notice that the leading zero 'naturally' falls away

Sir i read in the text that significant figures are digits which are known reliably plus first uncertain digits, sir if we measure a value as 16000000m how will we say that we can precisely find only two digits.

Isn't having a dot at the end of a number the same as having a 0 behind it? As in 35. is the exact same as 35.0? Why would you say 35. is two sig figs and 35.0 is three?
@wreckim
@wreckim 7 жыл бұрын
Hanna, all it is, is that 35.0 means someone made sure that it wasn't 35.3 or 35.7. 35 is in fact often 35 exactly; as in 35 apples. But 35 inches could be the height of a child, yet his height might actually be 35.1...however 35 inches tells you that it was not measured any more 'significantly' than that...just two digits.

Wait so in the case of having trailing 0's and with no decimal, would i put the answer as: "ambiguos," or just not count the trailing 0's and put the answer? (When the question is: Count sig figs)

I think, because like he said, you don't know where the zeros came from. The could be artificially created by taking something measured to 2.0, and moving the decimal and expressing as a different value (meters to centimeters). Something measured 2.00, you know was measured that precise, and would be 0.00200

@lilacrosewood6730
@lilacrosewood6730 7 жыл бұрын
Diwash Pokhrel okay so since there isn't a decimal point at the end of 37000 you'd only be counting the non-zero numbers 3&7 as sig figs but not the trailing zeros at the end. This means there are only 2 sig figs which are the 3&7 in 37000
