Not only has mankind created opera that sounds this ethereal but we have combined it with imagery that elevates it all to a higher plain. God bless Terrence Malick and all who get him.

@bobgreen6234 жыл бұрын
I disagree, but only slightly. I don't believe that people can be pure evil, any more than they can be purely good. We as a species and as individuals are capable of great evil and great good - to say that some people are pure evil also says that they are beyond redemption, and I don't believe anyone is beyond redemption.

This may be one of the most beautiful songs ever written... Some context for non-music people; Zbigniew Preisner wrote this for his friend, a Czechoslovakian filmmaker, after his passing. Requiem Mass's are dark symphonies written for those who have passed, by those who loved them, as a work of mourning and respect. The final movement in these is a Lacrimosa, which is focussed entirely on mourning; essentially, it is the musical equivalent of a goodbye. Preisner's love for his friend was as intense as this song. In short, Zbigniew Preisner really loved his friend. I only hope I can ever love someone that much someday.

Preisner wrote the Requiem for Kiezlowski, who, like Preisner, was Polish. We get to hear Preisner’s music (and Torwarnicka’s voice) in Kieslowski’s “Dekalog” and “Three Colors” trilogy, and Torwarnicka is especially showcased in “Double Life of Veronique.”

He really does. All of his films have astonishing music. I remember when I first saw “days of heaven” and couldn’t believe the beautiful cinematography and the exceptional music that went with it. That soundtrack was created by Ennio Moriricone and based on music by the composer Saint-Saens from his “carnival of animals”. It was nominated for best movie soundtrack that year but didn’t win for some reason.

Anyone else read (and understand) those parts of Martin Heidegger when he talks about the being of things? Anyone else read (and understand) those parts of David Bentley Hart where he argues for the identification of the active presence of being as a direct (and true) manifestation by God? What we witness around us, throughout every indivisible span of time and in all things, is the direct manifestation of a supernatural reality. There is absolutely nothing natural about natural reality.

Thank you for this! One point: "Lacrimosa" does not mean "Day of tears". It means "Tearful Lady", and (usually) refers to Mary.
@joshuastanford83557 жыл бұрын
isn't lacrimosa the Latin word for weeping?
@M_Faraday7 жыл бұрын
Yes, though more literally it means tearful: "Lacrima" = "Tear". My point was just that "Lacrimosa", since it is feminine, on its own would mean "Tearful lady". "Day of tears" is a mistranslation.
@ES-qy2ju7 жыл бұрын
I think it refers to the version of the song. there are two versions by Zbigniew Preisner *Lacrimosa *Lacrimosa (Days of Tears)
@_J4CK4L_7 жыл бұрын
I have studied Latin for 5 years at a scientific Liceo in Rome, and can confirm to you all that Faraday is correct. It literally means "full of tears". Even in current Italian "-osa" added to the end of a word means it is "full of it", similar to say: Fluff - Fluffy. But in this specific case it is even more related to a person.
@mkkm17017 жыл бұрын
But the lyrics go: "Lacrimosa, Dies Illa..." Although Dies is masculine gender, when referring to a specific day it can be feminine, thus being congruent with adjective lacrimosa. As in - "That day, full of tears (mournful) etc..."
