His reign was not clear..But he came just after the Mauryan Dynasty..So, it was between 1st century BCE and 1st century CE.. According to some historians, he was born in 209 BCE..

The king during Ashokan-Kalinga war is unknown in the history book..There may be some democratic kind of society like Kapilvastu, Licchvi etc. So, yes , there is no king mentioned in the Ashokan inscription at Dhauli (Rock edict 13) which is the source of this piece of history
