As a pre med student who uses most of their time studying I just recently figured out that I am not studying effectively and with my MCAT right around the corner it’s terrifying to risk changing my study habits because I’ve been getting great results however after hearing thoughts on not writing notes and how it’s been working well for you I’m going to give these tips a try
@xevve5959
@xevve5959 2 жыл бұрын
i suggest not to try new things as you have your exams in the corner because trying new things if your exams are close will cause inconsistency in your normal way of studying , which as you said gets you good marks as well ( this was suggested by kharma himself btw ) so try sticking with your normal note taking or try if you want to just a suggestion . good luck

I've just switched to taking notes on Notion thanks to watching your old video - I'd seen a lot of other KZbin videos on it but it was your video which really let me see how useful it could be for me and pushed me to try it out. It's changed my life as it means that my notes are well organised and easy to find when I need them (such as when reviewing my answers to past paper questions).

The tips here are very helpful, thanks Kharma. I tried active learning by working on the past year paper but I had the difficulty to answer the questions as I have not mastered the concepts and linkage between the facts. I am wondering if you can make a video showing how you did it with some live examples? Guess it may help others as well. Thanks

I am in my first year psychology and did the same in the first semester, endless note taking, which I realised after the exams, had been pointless. I now focus on relisening lectures, reading lecture notes and looking at past exam papers.
@InversePacman
@InversePacman 2 жыл бұрын
I'm a 3rd year psych student who struggles with ADHD, so reviewing lectures is a daunting task in itself, however I have noticed that when profs provide a single past paper I understand what I should be studying more clearly and can relate it to the lectures. Problem for me is, none of my profs provide past papers anymore and I cannot seem to find any that are geared toward psychology, have you managed to find any resources which provide just that? Thanks!
@intuitivelyeating6702
@intuitivelyeating6702 2 жыл бұрын
@@InversePacman Hey! I've not been through the UK or US university systems so not sure if this will be relevant or not (I am a psychology student though). When I didn't have access to past papers I would make my own. I'd go through the lectures and think about what the most important things to know seemed to be, then write questions covering those topics and also write out an ideal answer based on the lecture information. Then after a week or two I'd try to answer the questions from memory and compare my answers to the 'ideal answers' I'd written from my notes. If you have friends in the class it can be great if everybody writes their own questions and shares them because then you can see what other people think are the most important points and good answers to these. The first time you do this you could even make a time to talk with the lecturer or tutor to see if you are on the right track in terms of identifying the main things they are looking for.

Nasir, I hear you, but depending on what you're studying, taking notes and writing down schemes is sometimes necessary to summarize the huge amount of information you need to learn. I totally agree with the use of past papers being really helpful, but unfortunately in my country where I study medicine there is no such thing. There's no place where the past questions are stored. Of course we try and ask students that have already finished the year about their exams, but professors know that and deliberately try to come up with some crazy questions every year so that we don't "just learn past questions and pass the exam". It leads to the questions being more and more specific and out of context, so its really hard to prepare for it. It feels like the significance of students knowing the most important part of material is gone and now they just try to make us fail. From what I gathered from your videos studying in UK feels more balanced and focused on practical knowledge instead of memorising every little detail that probably wont be useful when we finally get to practice medicine in hospitals.

Thanks for sharing this. Thought I’d do the same a little study group of mine teach the others out weakest areas e.g. I would teach an area of linguistics that I’m not confident with so the person in the group who is confident can tell me if I’ve fully understood it. We also teach each other what we’re really good at so the others can learn from us. It works really well and you learn a lot of extra skills too. To teach is to learn.

I don't why, but whenever i tried to do couple of questions and I find that it doesn't ask you the answer directly, I stop doing it. Its stressful , i just feel the pressure that burdens me every time i try to because I'm afraid to get it wrong. 😔 I just feel stressed everytime I started to do things that will help me. I'm afraid I got it wrong , I hate the expectations I get. Once when I get bad grade in a exam my teacher really shows how dissapointed she is in me in front of the class, my parents are mad at me, even my friends had expectations on me. I just felt life is to suffer eventually. It sucks, I'm trying to work on it , but the memories just come back ...

Would like to implement this technique but don’t know where to start considering this universities uniquely crafted lectures and exams. Thank you.
