Husayn laid his life while fighting against the Umayyad caliph Yazid ibn Mu'awiya in the battle of Karbala. During the month of Muharram, Sia muslims don’t take part in celebration but observe it as a period of sorrow. The wear black garments to mark their grief. Sia Muslims also do fasting during the 10 days of Muharram. The month of Muharram is considered the best month to keep fasting after the month of Ramadan.
Muharram is one of the four sacred months of Islamic calender. And it is Muharram from which islamic new year starts. The meaning of Muharram is forbidden, and it is one of the four sacred months in islamic calendar in which warfare is not allowed. The 10th day of Muharram is called Roz E Ashura.
How Muharram should be observed
As Muharram is the sacred month of islamic calender, this month should be fasting, Sadaqah Jariyah and nafl (voluntary) prayers. The devotees should also do Qur’an recitation. The devotees should visits their nearby mosque and spend some quality time with their near and dear ones.
What is the importance of Muharram
The importance of Muharram can be understood with the fact that it is one of the four sacred months of Islamic calendar. The month also saw the occurrence of several events of islamic history. Some of the major events that happened during this month incldue Hijra sharif- migration of the muslims to Madina. It is during this month that Imam Husayn laid their life in the battle of Karbala.
In India, Muharram juloos is being performed throughout India. This juloos is being held in different parts of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh where muslims are in good numbers. On this day you will see muslims taking tajia to akhara or also called karbala. You will see Tajia and Muharram Juloos in different cities of Bihar that includes Patna, Bhagalpur, Khagaria, Siwan, Motihari and Darbhanga among the others.
