And he did this every day, every day this high energy. He was perfect. And the commercials were as entertaining as the music. And the promotions! Thanks Ellis, for posting this. I miss that era of radio.

Best Top 40 high-energy jock ever. I had just moved from Portland to the LA area in 1966 as a kid and was excited to hear Steele. I had just heard him on KISN Portland, which he had left for KHJ in 65. KHJ had about a 40 share afternoons, which is unheard of today. When you walked the beaches in Sothern California, you heard transistor radio after radio blaring KHJ. The station owned the air waves in in LA. The Drake format was hot hot hot.

You forgot KEWB in between KISN and KHJ.

I miss those days too. Moved to So Cal in '66 and fell in love with KHJ! I love listening to these old broadcasts. Really does make my day.

Thank you so much Ellis! No one comes close to him. God broke the mold the day the Real Don Steel was born.

I love the boss radio I only wish I was older back in those days what a time in American history 1960s & khj made it so much better BOSS RADIO #1

I used to sell computers until the day I was at CBS FM and setting one up in the program director's office. I heard this commotion out from the hallway and when I looked out the door I saw the Real Don Steele in the studio jumping around and screaming that Tina Delgado was alive. After that, I went back to the office, turned in my resignation and got a job in radio. Never looked back! Thanks Don!

Back in Los Angeles in the day when you could walk down the street with your radio and have good music to groove to sidewalks without homeless people the trip on

Can you imagine being on the air in LA playing those songs when they were new?

At 8:14 he says the Boss Jocks will attend an opera at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre March the 3rd. This same aircheck can be found elsewhere on YT and is dated Monday February 27, 1967.

great debates everyday on the school bus whether to listen to crummy KRLA, or the great KHJ Boss radio with the Real Don Steele, Robert W. Morgan, and Charlie Tuna. Happy to say KHJ usually won out...
@boydcannon422 Жыл бұрын
Hey! I listened to KRLA and KHJ! I had both stations set on my car radio and flipped back and forth. Then KMET FM set in. AM radio was on the out!

This is not 1966. Epistle to Dippy by Donovan debuted on Billboard in Feb 1967.

Could KHJ have played it locally in late 66 before it charted nationally in Billboard in Feb 67.

@@EllisFeaster Check the dates on the rest of the music played....Show Me by Joe Tex debuted in March of 67...No Fair At All by The Association, Feb 67. Just to name a couple. Obviously not a big deal, just pointing out what I thought was just a typo, but someone has the date wrong.
@EllisFeaster2 жыл бұрын
@@johnvelchoff1933 It’s possible the date on the tape is wrong. When you are dealing with 55 year old tapes, it happens.

Not to mention I Had Too Much To Dream by the Electric Prunes, also Feb ‘67. Still, this is a fantastic air check! KHJ at its best. What a pleasure to listen to!
