Some information for each KHL team 1. CSKA Moscow - The hockey team for the Red Army, originally, hence the red star there. One of the most powerful sports dynasties in history, the 1960s, 70s and 80s CSKA team fielded Soviet internationals, such as Vladislav Tretiak, Valeri Kharlamov, Vyacheslav Fetisov, etc., that won many Olympic medals and World championships during the "Golden Age" of Soviet hockey. 2. Dynamo Moscow - The hockey team owned by the KGB. Dynamo means "power". Alexander Ovechkin's childhood team. 3. Spartak Moscow - The "people's team", since Spartak is translated from Russian into Spartacus, the gladiator who fought for freedom. 4. SKA St Petersburg - Hockey team for the Leningrad Red Army division, which is why there is also a red star. Pavel Datsyuk and Ilya Kovalchuk are stars in this team. 5. Severstal Cherepovets - "Severstal" is a steel company that owns the team, the company logo transformed into the team logo. 6. Jokerit Helsinki - "Jokers", or "wild cards" in Finnish. The team's logo origins is unknown to me, sorry. ========= (late edit - "Jokerit chose the 'Wild card' as their logo because there is another Finnish team called the 'Aces' and they decided to continue with the playing cards theme" by FLYMB) ========== 7. Red Star Kunlun - "Kunlun" is a mountain where dragons supposedly live. The red star is communist. 8. Salavat Yulaev Ufa - Salavat Yulaev was a Bashkir hero in the Pugachev uprising in the 1770s against the Russian empire. 9. Amur Khabarovsk - Amur is one of the world's longest rivers. The Amur tiger is one of the world's rarest tigers today. 10. Medvescak Zagreb - "Medvescak" means "bear" in Croatian.----------------------------- (Team is not in KHL anymore) 11. Sibir Novosibirsk - "Sibir" is Siberia in Russian. Kind of obvious. Vladimir Tarasenko's childhood team. 12. Slovan Bratislava - Slovan is Slav in Slovak. The eagle is the national bird of Slovakia. 13. Yugra Khanty-Mansiysk - "Yugra" is the ancient name for the western region is Siberia. The mammoth is one of symbols of Siberia. 14. Admiral Vladivostok - Admiral. Fleet. Obvious name for a port city. 15. Avangard Omsk - "Avangard" means vanguard in Russian. Omsk is known to produce armoured cars, hence the name Vanguard. 16. Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod - The region is known to produce cars, such as the Torpedo-ZIL car, which is why there is a deer, the car logo, there. 17. Vityaz Moscow Oblast - "Vityaz" is knight or hero in Russian. The Vityazy are also a military fighter jet group. Artemi Panarin's childhood team. 18. Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg - Avtomibilist means automobile, and the area is known to produce cars. 19. Lada Togliatti - "Lada" is a car, and the factory is in Togliatti. Also, Lada means "harmony". 20. Lokomotiv Yaroslavl - "Lokomotiv" for trains. Yaroslal hockey team is owned by JSC Railway Company, hence the name. The team is doing well, considering their plane crash tragedy in 2011. 21. Metallurg Magnitogorsk - Named after the iron and steel mining that goes on in Magnitogorsk. Evgeni Malkin's chilhood team. 22. Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk - Petrochemist in Russian. Nizhnekamskneftekhim owns the company, which specializes in Petrochemicals. 23. Traktor Chelyabinsk - Known for tractor plants and factories there. Evgeny Kuznetsov's childhood team. 24. Ak Bars Kazan - The animal is a snow leopard, a national symbol of Kazan and Tatarstan. 25. Barys Astana - Another snow leopard, "barys" meaning snow leopard in Kazakh. 26. HK Sochi - Hockey Club Sochi. Pretty bland. The leopard is the symbol of Sochi. 27. Dynamo Riga - As for Dynamo Moscow, "dynamo" means power. The lions are symbols of Latvia. 28. Dynamo Minsk - As you probably have guessed, "dynamo" means power. I am not Belarussian, so I don't know why there is a bison on the logo. ============== (late addition - "There is a national park in Belarus called "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" where bisons are preserved, because this is a very rare species. So, Dynamo Minsk has a bison on their logo as a one of the most known animals of the country" by Стефан Сайфутдинов) ========== 29. Metallurg Novokuznetsk - Named after iron and steel mining in the area. Sergei Bobrovsky's childhood team.------------------- (Team is not in KHL anymore)

So true! How could they "eff" this one up so bad?!?! One of the most iconic hockey logos throughout the world! That's embarrassing...You had Spartak already earlier in the list and then you just bring it up again.... Yes, this list needs a major make-over! PS: Erik Karlsson played for Jokerit during the last lockout. But before you get more confused: Karlsson is Swedish, Jokerit Helsinki is Finnish and KHL is a (mainly) Russian Hockey League. :-)

I started following the KHL just before the lockout happened and haven't looked back, I love it. SKA St. Petersburg and Omsk are probably my two favourite teams!

The Avangard Omsk logo is an A with a Hawk through it. It is a reference to the team being called Omsk Hawks before they joined the KHL.

Dinamo Minsk's logo is of a Bison. The European Bison is the national animal of Belarus, which is the country Minsk is the capital of, hence the reason for the Bison in the logo.

Neil, I heard that the Avangard logo symbolizes a hawk, so the team has a nickname "Hawks". They chose it to show their speed and danger for other teams. To me, it also looks like the letter A, which obviously stands for Avangard.

Worth to mention regarding Lokomotiv Jaroslav is that in 2011 the team was in a airplane crash during their trip to Minsk, that killed almost everyone in their team. They eventually rebuilt and lots of the other teams reached out to help.

1. "Salavat Yulaev" is based in Ufa, Bashkiria. It has been named after Salvat Yulaev, an ethnic Bashkir and a peasant uprising hero during the reign of Catherine the Great (in the 1770s). 2. "Dynamo" Minsk is from Belorussia (Belorus, Belarus) famous for its wild bisons, hence the logo. 3. "Avangard"'s logo is a hawk and an "A" at the same time (for "Avangard", obviously). 4. "Yugra" has a mammoth on the logo, not an elephant. They have unearthed a lot of mammoths from Siberia's permafrost areas (Yugra is located in West Siberia).

One of the more interesting things about these videos is the way they reflect sporting culture in Europe compared to North America. For instance, most of the KHL's Russian teams are relatively old and were founded during the Soviet era. They are often associated with either state companies (serving as teams for workers at a specific factory or plant), such as Lada, Neftekhimik or Metallurg, or with the so-called sports societies that are in term associated with a government agency (Dinamo being an all-union society associated with the political police - hence the similarity in logos between the Dinamo teams since they were in fact sister franchises from different Soviet republics - CSKA and SKA with the army etc). An interesting fact is that Spartak is also a sports society, but without affiliation to any specific government branch. The teams of the Swedish SHL often have a history of originating as neighbourhood teams (Färjestad, Frölunda and Brynäs are all names of neighbourhoods ) or an amalgamation of such teams joining up to form a city-wide team (HV71, Linköping). Many of them also started out as general sports teams, with football or bandy usually being played before the formation of the hockey division (Djurgården, Färjestad, Rögle - the latter two even being named "ball clubs" officially due to their common combination of those two sports being played by the same club during the respective seasons. This brings us to Finland, where it is not uncommon for a larger town to have one or several teams on every level, from professional through semi-pro to various amateur levels. As shown in the Liiga logo video, many clubs also have multiple divisions, with HIFK, Ilves and TPS boasting teams in the higher leagues of association football. Also, bear in mind that most European leagues have a promotion/relegation system, meaning there is a huge variation in location of franchises since their league affiliation is determined solely by performance. An interesting example is Tingsryd in the Swedish second tier, whose arena can accomodate a fourth of the whole municipality and more people than there are inhabitants in the entire town. Also, I'd like to mention the fierce rivalry between Mora and Leksand, two teams from very small, neighbouring towns. The latter is arguably the most supported team across all of Sweden, and their arena can fit *literally every single inhabitant* of the municipality and still have a couple hundred seats left. Despite this, it is sold out a few times per season and the two rival teams have on two occasions used the Globe Arena in Stockholm for their matchups, cramming 12,5 thousand people into it despite the capital being 270 km away from the nearest of the two towns. Sure, the NHL is the league with the most history and the best teams and players, and some franchises (*insert Original Six reference) are as legendary as they get, but when it comes to passion, hardcore fans and the ability to unite a whole city, the two major Scandinavian leagues are second to none. Anyhow, the love of the game is what unites us all, regardless of which team we support or what league we prefer.*end of marathon post* / (Swedish/Finnish) Linköping, Ilves & Leafs fan

The logo for dinamo Minsk is a European bison which is very rare and can only be found in Belarus, it is also their national animal

European bison can be found in Poland as well, the main reserve for European bison is on Polish-Belarussian border. There is around 1500 bisons in Poland, about 1000 in Belarus and 250 in Ukraine when it comes to native populations. Also bison has been reintroduced into other countries as well, most notably around 500 animals in Russia, but there are smaller populations in other countries.

One mistake, the joker you had is not a Moscow team, it's actually the Finnish team called Jokerit. They've only been in khl for a few years, before they played in Finnish liiga and they've been one of the more successful teams over the years.
