Experiencing Rothko’s works in person (alone and with no time constraints) has steadily, over the last decade, climbed its way toward the very top of my bucket-list.

I saw some of his work at the Tate and it is overpowering. It grabs you by the shoulders, and asks you to interpret it. It looms over you. It is stern and it has no horizon - you stare into a deep distance. They are definitely better experienced alone, but its very hard to achieve that.

No, let us have our own unique thoughts and ideas. Rothko is the most overrated artist ever.

The general public don’t like Rothko. Warhol is far more ‘overrated’.

Excellent Lecture, the references of influence on Rotho and his influence over others and the evolution of that influence through the 20th and 21 century, just so brilliant and expressed in a lecture that was about color and immersion and sensation. I truly enjoyed it and understood it and made me want to see it for myself.

This speaker was well understood in the subjects of the points and of his subjects: Rothko and his Paintings. These points include: Rothko History + his Peers, Painting in the mid 20th Century, Paint, Colors, and Light. With the value of the information he made an excellent presentation, fresh, clear, spoken with excellent Voice and Diction, and delivery with a balance of Ego, that necessary to ensure the audience accepts his content with confidence. This presentation has as much value, if not more, for students in Journalism/Public Speaking; Journalism/Voice and Diction; Journalism/Rhetoric, classes. Depending on the University, the ab9ve subjects will be found in either under the Journalism or English Departments. Value listen content, several levels.

Rothko would never have approved of the artificial lighting with spots, which has completely deadened them in the Tate. They were more alive and the forms floated and glowed with inner light when originally installed with natural light filtered from above back in the 70's

We all experience art in different ways and react to it on a very personal level. I love Rothko and would love to see some of those still in the USA. I enjoyed the lecture, seeing someone’s perspective on Rothko’s work and particularly being introduced to the work of Barnett Newman . I have just been doing some research into his series Who’s Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue and am so shocked to learn about all the destruction wreaked on this artist’s work and the terrible conservation attempt on one of them by a so called expert. Art is supposed to be one of life’s joys, a spiritual experience, we see what we see and if it makes our heart move then surely - on some level - the art has achieved some kind of objective. Sad to see some really negative comments about the lecture and the person giving it, but that’s the internet for you I guess. I enjoyed the lecture and I learned more about another artist I was completely unfamiliar with, so I am happy. I love that KZbin gives me access to lectures, art in its widest form, art restoration and conservation, art history that otherwise I might not have the time to engage with. Over the last few weeks I have been able to engage with lectures on Vermeer, Rembrandt, Rothko and now Barnett Newman…Wow!

I always find that trying to explain a Rothko is futile. Everyone gets their own thing from these paintings & I think that’s what he intended.
@ben-km6uu Жыл бұрын
I agree. I don't think you understand Rothko through thinking about him, simply on feeling his work emotionally.

Ansonsten: Toller Vortrag. Danke dafür!

if you have to watch youtube tutorials and copy technique, you really missed the entire point of abstract painting. Seriously, I suggest, instead of doing this, study some art history and read some philosophy and whatever you find interesting and drop some acid. This advice still stands if you're a bored middle-aged house wife which you probably are, if you're watching this.

I watched a video hoping to understand and love Rothko. Too big a leap, my opinion that it's a scam just got stronger. Now KZbin keeps suggesting every Rothko analysis video to me. Ugh. Please stop KZbin. I don't like Rothko and the insufferable opinions of Rothko fans that keep looking inward as opposed to actually looking at a Rothko and calling out the truth. The emperor has no clothes.
@davidpelzer2404 Жыл бұрын
I think Rothko is overhyped and overrated. If there weren't these people around making their living by injecting meaning and monetary value into these stained canvases, the "work" would end up in the dust bin of history, where it belongs. Because Rothko was a notorious alcoholic you can imagine where these images come from. Vibration in lines of colour is nothing new to art as it occurs throughout the whole of a picture of a work by any of the old masters while depicting mimesis that actually has meaning.

He seems pretty impressed with his own vacuous ramblings. Art people are mostly insufferable. Trying to define Rothko is so pointless - just experience the work without explaining it. Feel it - that's all you need. And that is plenty.
