Khusrubagh is one of the major tourist attraction in Prayagraj. It is located within 5 minutes walking distance from Prayagraj Railway Station. Situated over 40 acres quadrangle shaped land, it includes tomb of Jahangir's first wife Shah Begum, her son Khushru Mirza and Khusru's daughter Nisar Begum. Now it is listed as an Indian site of national importance.
These three sandstone mausoleum represent a marvelous example of Mughal architecture. The first mausoleum is the cemetery of Jahangir's first wife Manbhwati Bai, whom Jahangir had given the title of Shah Begum in 1587. Man Bai was the daughter of Raja Bhagwanth Das of Amber. Shah Begum committed suicide in 1603 by taking overdose of opium as her heart was broken due to bitterness between her son and Jahangir. Her tomb was designed by Jahangir's principal court artist Aqa Reza in 1606.
Next to Begum's is the tomb of Khusru's sister Nisar Begum. The tomb was constructed in the year 1924 to 1925 by herself just at the time of construction of Khusru's tomb. This tomb is architecturally much more impressive. The tomb stands on a high plingth and it's interior is adorned with paintings with Persian cypresses, plants and flowers.
Last of the three tomb is the tomb of Khusru. Khusru was first imprisoned within this garden after he rebelled against his father Jahangir in 1606. Following an attempt to escape he was blinded by emperor's instruction. In 1622 he was killed on the order of his brother prince Khurram, who later became emperor Shah Jahan.
There is another mausoleum, known as Bibi Tamolon's tomb. Stands in the extreme west, which has no sign of centoph and is without any inscription. It is sometimes associated with the Istambole begum of Fatehpur Sikri. But another version is that Khusru's sister had built it for herself but was burried somewhere else.
