Note that all inter-crew communications was by 'voice tube', not electrtronc intercom. In most scenes here, the stem on the flight helmet is not connected to any voice tube.

Ahem! WW2 actually started in September 1939 in Europe. The attack on Pearl Harbor was just an enlargement of the conflict. Japan had already clashed with the Soviet Army before then (Spring 1939) at the battle of Khalkin Gol and had been soundly thrashed by Zhukov.

In early 1940, the ki-27, ki-43, a6m2 Zero, Curtiss, P-40, Wildcat, Buffalo, Bf109E3, SpitfireMk1, and the Hurrican were unarmored, no pilot protection, no self-sealing fuel tank. The Japanese army bomber ki-49 " Donryu " was one of the first heavy armoured aircraft in the world. The late japanese fighter ki 84, a6m5 Zero, ki-61, J2M3, and N1K2-J were armored and having self-sealing fuel tank.

Love the "chinese" Ki-10s twisting with the Ki-27s. It shows that the ki-27 gave up little in terms of maneuverability to the Ki-10.

There's some outstanding airmanship in this 1930's vintage Japanese war propaganda film. The Chinese bi-plane fighters are actually Japanese Ki-10's. The pilots are most certainly top military army pilots pressed into service to make this film. By the time WWII started Japan boasted some of the best military pilots in the world. A great percentage had already sharpened their real-life combat skills in China in the 1930's. By 1944 most of them were dead, with very few surviving the war.
@jeffreyyoung7824

The Japanese Imperial Army Ki-27 was a very good late 1930's fighter plane, highly maneuverable with a top speed of 290 mph compared to the Curtiss biplane Hawk top speed of about 240 mph. Both aircraft were armed with only two, 0.30 caliber machine guns, no better than WW1 fighter planes. The Ki-27 was unarmored, having no pilot protection and it's fuel tanks we're also unprotected. The design reflected archaic WW1 fighter design with it's fixed gear. Still, the Ki-27 proved superior to Chinese Nationalist Kuomingtang biplane fighter planes. At the start of war with the United States the Ki-27 was already obsolete. But due to the numbers built, the Ki-27 remained in Japanese Army service all the way to war's end.

The Ki-27s slaughtered the Brewster Buffalos early in the Pacific war and gave a good account of itself against P40s and Hurricanes as well, despite the light armament. It was much more agile than any of the allied fighters that opposed it.

The U.S. Army Air Force was historically terrified of any of its high-tech Norden bombsights falling into the hands of the enemy. Norden bombsights were guarded by armed men when being carried to the B-17 and B-24 bombers for installation. But as Mr. Spock once advised Captain Kirk that in wartime, military secrets are the most fleeting of all, applied just as well to the Norden bombsight. The Germans captured Norden bombsights from downed B-17 and B-24 bombers. After technical analysis, the Germans gave good marks to the Norden bombsight but claimed the German bomber bombsight was superior. The Germans did not copy the Norden bombsight. The Japanese obtained a Norden bombsight from a captured B-17. Japanese technical analysis confirmed the Norden bombsight was technically superior to Japanese bombsights. Yet the Japanese expressed satisfaction with their own bombsights and saw no need to copy the Norden bombsight.

All through the 1930s young Japanese men, most still of high school age, vied to become aviators. Competition to be accepted into the Imperial Army Air Force and Imperial Navy Air Force was extremely high. Training was harsh, even brutal, and the washout rate was deliberately high. Flash forward to late 1943. Both the Japanese Army and Navy air forces have been forced to rely on conscription for new aircrew. Young Japanese men in college want no part of it and those drafted are resentful. They all know by now about the high loss rate of pilots for both services. Men leave Japan for combat duty as aviators but never return.

The poor Chinese fighters had no choice but to fight against the Japanese. They actually put up a great fight but yet they were actually cut to pieces by the Japanese fighters and bombers. They only had obsolete planes but yet they actually tried their best to defend themselves and their own country at all costs. I wonder if these Japanese aviators ever suspected what was in store for them in a handful of years. American Curtiss P-40B Tomahawk and P-40E Warhawk 0.50 caliber bullets would be ripping through unshielded Japanese aircraft fuel tanks and unarmored fuselages, turning their bombers and fighters into garish, blazing balls of oily fire high in the sky, cremating the pilots.
