If I had to sum up the reasons that made Zahir-ud-Din Muhammad Babur - founder of the Mughal Empire - into such a good military commander in a single word, it would be experience. I should point out that Babur’s father, Umar Shaikh Mirza II, was never an exceptional military commander. Babur’s own military career was far more impressive. Babur, in his memoirs (Tuzk-i-Babri), mentions three major battles that his father commanded during his life. One against the Auzbegs/Uzbeks, in which he was victorious, and two others (against Yunus Khan and Sultan Ahmad Mirza) in which he suffered divisive defeats. Umar Sheikh Mirza seems to have been an average military commander and warrior. One who only ever engaged in conflicts at a small scale. Nothing out of the ordinary. “He (Umar Sheikh Mirza) was a short and stout, round-bearded and fleshy-faced person. He used to wear his tunic so very tight that to fasten the strings he had to draw his belly in and, if he let himself out after tying them, they often tore away… Twice out-distancing all his braves, he got to work with his own sword… A middling archer, he was strong in the fist-not a man but fell to his blow. Through his ambition, peace was exchanged often for war, friendliness for hostility…” “He fought three ranged battles, the first with Yunas Khan… There he was beaten and made prisoner… His second battle was fought on the Urus, in Turkistan, with Auzbegs returning from a raid near Samarkand. He crossed the river on the ice, gave them a good beating… His third battle he fought with (his brother) Sultan Aḥmad Mirza at a place between Shahrukhiya and Aara-tipa, named Khwas. Here he was beaten.” -Babur describes his father, as well as his characteristics and military career, in the Tuzk-i-Babri A common misconception that I have seen about Babur is that he was a natural military genius from a young age. This could not be further from the truth. Babur was quite different from the likes of Nader Shah or Napoleon Bonaparte. Men who had proven themselves to have possessed natural ability for military command since their early military careers. Babur’s early military career, in contrast, was far from exceptional. Instead, it was stained with mistakes and defeats. Examples being the Battle of Sar-i-Pul and loss of Samarkand to the Uzbeks in 1501 AD. I think one of the most important features of any good military commander is that they award their opponents with the respect that they deserve, so an not to underestimate their capabilities. A characteristic that was found in Babur as well. He speaks of his opponents, even those he disliked, with a certain amount of respect in terms of their ability. We see this in the Tuzk-i-Babri, when Babur talks about accomplished opponents, such as Muhammad Shaybani Khan, Khagan of the Uzbeks, and Rana Sanga, the Rajput Rana of Mewar. “The second is Rana Sanga who in these latter days had grown great by his own valour and sword. His original country was Chitor; in the downfall from power of the Mandau Sultans, he became possessed of many of their dependencies such as Rantanbur, Sarangpur, Bhilsan and Chandiri.” -Babur described Rana Sanga as one of the main powers in North India, as well as his accomplishments, in the Tuzk-i-Babri What sets Babur apart is that he was willing to learn from each defeat to improve himself. We can especially see this in his battles in the earlier part of his military career. Babur mentions, in the Tuzk-i-Babri, the reasons for his defeat, as well as mistakes made. Errors that would be rectified so as to improve the condition of his military. An example of this would be Babur’s defeat at the hands of the Uzbeks during his earlier battles, as he fell victim to the Tulughma tactic, in contrast the improved response to the Tulughma in battles against the Uzbeks and Arghun Mongols later onwards. His willingness to learn from his opponents also helped him out in the long term. An example being the incorporation of nomadic Mongol (Moghul) tribes to allow his to make use of the Tulughma himself. One of the greatest characteristics about Babur was that he was constantly learning and improving his military forces. We are talking about one of the first commanders in the region to make use of modern gunpowder weaponry. During his time in Kabul, he would bring in experts from the Ottoman Empire to modernize his military. His army would be drilled to make use of the Tabur Cengi (Camp Battle) or Dastur-i-Rumi (Roman Method) - modern tactics of the Ottoman armies in the west - which were combined with the Tulughma. In doing so, Babur set up the the basic template of Mughal military theory and tactics. “I had been at great pains to train and exercise them in the best manner. Perhaps on no other occasion did I have my troops in such perfect discipline. All of my household … who could be serviceable were divided into bodies of tens and fifties, and I had appointed proper officers for each body, and had assigned to each its proper station on the right or left, so that they were all trained and perfectly informed of what they were to do; and had orders to be on the alert, and active, during the fight. The right and left wings, the right and left divisions, the right and left flanks, were to charge on horseback, and were drawn up and instructed to act of themselves, without the necessity of directions from the tawachis (officers), and in general all of the troops knew their proper stations, and were trained to attack those to whom they were opposed.” -Babur describes the training and drills his army had to undergo, as well as change in orders and better organization (from the Tuzk-i-Babri) The standard formation used by the Mughal Empire by combining the tactics of the nomads of Central Asia with the modern tactics of the Ottoman Empire. Conclusion These characteristics of Babur would ultimately develop his ability as a military commander. The Babur that we see in the First Battle of Panipat and Battle of Khanwa was a grizzled war veteran. A different Babur from the one we say in the earlier part of his military career. A man that had spent a good portion of his life on the battlefield. A military commander, with three decades of experience under his belt, in command of an army of veterans - experienced, disciplined, and drilled by Babur himself for a decade - to perfectly follow out his new tactics.

Many believe that Babur, the founder of the Mughal Empire, was actually gay. Let’s look at the evidence to decide. The theory that the Mughal Emperor Babur was a homosexual is based on a few lines from Babur’s memoir, the Baburnama or Tuzk-e Babri. Within his memoirs, Babur makes note of being attracted to another boy. This took place when Babur was sixteen years old. "In those leisurely days I discovered in myself a strange inclination, nay ! as the verse says, 'I maddened and afflicted myself for a boy in the camp-bazar, his very name, Baburi, fitting in. Up till then I had had no inclination for any-one, indeed of love and desire, either by hear-say or experience, I had not heard, I had not talked. At that time I composed Persian couplets, one or two at a time" -Babur on first encounters with Baburi from Baburnama “From time to time Baburi used to come to my presence but out of modesty and bashfulness, I could never look straight at him; how then could I make conversation and recital? In my joy and agitation I could not thank him (for coming); how was it possible for me to reproach him with going away? What power had I to command the duty of service to myself? One time during the time of desire and passion when I was going with companions along a lane and suddenly met him face to face, I got into such a state of confusion that I almost went right off. To look straight at him and put words together was impossible” -Babur on further encounters with Baburi from Baburnama The quotes above are from the Baburnama, translated by Annette Susannah. They tell the story of Babur during his time as the King of Ferghana. He meets as boy named Baburi. I think that it is pretty clear that Babur was attracted to Baburi. I do not see how anyone can read the quotes from Babur and come to any other conclusion. There are no other similar incidents mentioned in Babur’s memoirs. About any sort of attraction towards any other men. Babur’s relationship with his wife Another thing that is used as a supporting argument of Babur being gay is his relationship with his first wife, Aisha Sultan Begum. Babur’s relationship with Aisha was quite poor. She would eventually leave Babur. "I was not ill-disposed towards her, yet, this being my first marriage, out of modesty and bashfulness, I used to see her once in 10, 15 or 20 days. Later on when first inclination did not last, my bashfulness increased. Then my mother Khanim used to send me, once a month or every 40 days, with driving and driving, dunnings and worryings" -Babur on his first marriage to Aisha Sultan Begum (from the Baburnama) It seems pretty clear that Babur was not very interested in her. This may also have had to do with the fact that Babur at this time was only sixteen years of age. He may just have not been interested in marriage. However, at the same time we much also consider that sixteen was not too young to be married in that era. In fact, it was perfectly normal. Babur always had a poor relationship with Aisha. First of all, he was never really too interested in her to begin with. Later on the two would quarrel quite a bit with each other. The two had a daughter, Fakhr-un-Nissa, in 1501. She was Babur’s first child and Babur loved her a lot. Unfortunately, Fakhr-un-Nissa died a month after she was born. This resulted in Babur becoming very depressed. This was the last straw for this marriage. Aisha left Babur sometime soon after this event. Babur blamed this on Rabiah Sultan Begum, Aisha’s sister, who he believed convinced Aisha to leave him. Babur’s relationship with Aisha is used as further evidence of the fact that Babur was gay. As it seems from his memoirs that he had little interest in her to begin with. It must be noted however that Babur did get married again after Aisha and he also had multiple concubines as well. These being Maham Begum, Zainab Sultan Begum, Masuma Sultan Begum, Bibi Mubarika, Gulrukh Begum, Dildar Begum, Gulnar Aghacha, Nazgul Aghacha. He also had many children from these marriages. Argument against homosexuality Those that make an argument against Babur being homosexual claim that the English translations of the Baburnama are poorly done. According to them, Babur only comes across as being attracted to Baburi in the translations. That in the Persian version of the Baburnama, the relationship between Babur and Baburi was platonic. There was no sexual element. I honestly do not see how that is possible. Platonic friendships rarely seem to inspire one to write Persian poetry about their friends upon first contact. Babur clearly seems to have been infatuated with Baburi. The truth is that we cannot really use the Persian version of the Baburnama as the original source of information either. Babur originally wrote the Baburnama in the Chagatai language, his primary language. This was a Turkic language belonging to the Karluk group. The Chagatai language is no longer really used in the world anymore. However, the Uzbek language is the closest to it and is believed to be a successor to the Chagatai language. So the only way for someone to read the original Baburnama in the Chagatai language would be to know the Uzbek language, as well as the Perso-Arabic script. Conclusion I do not see how anyone can deny the fact that Babur did have sexual inclinations towards other men. His relationship with Baburi is anything but a platonic friendship. His words make it pretty clear that he was sexually attracted to Baburi, a boy who was probably near his age. Saying that the English translation misrepresents the context of the original version or the Persian version seems like an excuse. An excuse to deny the existence of homosexuals within the Muslim world. I have mostly seen conservatives use this excuse. We do know from Babur’s own words that he did have sexual inclinations towards other men. That is undeniable. However, we have no historical evidence (from Babur’s words or otherwise) that he ever acted on these feelings. “a person who is sexually or romantically attracted to people of their same sex” -The definition of a homosexual from Webster. The definition of homosexuality does not take into account whether or not one acts upon these feelings or attractions. It only considers the existence of the attraction towards people of the same sex. So it really does not matter at all whether Babur ever acted upon these feelings towards Baburi or anyone else. The only thing that matters according to the definition is the existence of these inclinations. Another thing to consider is that Babur did have multiple wives and concubines later on. From these relationships, he had many children. The existence of concubines seem to suggest that he did feel some sort of attraction towards women as well. In my opinion, Babur was probably either gay or bisexual. I would lean towards Babur being bisexual.
