Very professional workmanship. As difficult as it is for the average guy, I think the hardest part to any of these projects is to know what you want in the final package. I really like that type of bed, nice and flat. The awning and backside cooking area is a great feature. Thanks for sharing. Lol.

Wow that's nice ! You can power an oven with a 600 watt inverter, got to be 1500 watt. Need to see more of how the bed slides into position.

Very cool indeed. I thought laptop computers ran on 12 volts, but you said 240 volt sockets to charge them. Great to have 240 volt connection, though. The insects are pretty smart, you know... how about sealing around the edge of the canvas. You have done a a great job there. I want one.

Thankyou for sharing, what a great van set up. With the bed set up how did get one to slide across and how is it supported in the middle? Also the pop up box what mechanism did you use to get it to pop up? I imagine it would need to be quite strong to push the weight up particularly if it were filled with crockery or similar.

RealFarknMcCoy True, there is no such thing as a standard US accent. The country itself is the size of a Continent. What may sound "different" to you in the Western part of the country may not sound that different to someone else from the East. Personally, I don't care about British accent at all, but I am in love the Australian one.

This is a fantastic build -- did you actually do it all yourself or did you have it made ? I love the fact you went for a 200w solar panel first up. Moots start with 100 and find they need more and that it is on your roof and charging all day, as opposed to stopping and setting up your solar system. I really just love it all. Hey guys, I trust you are enjoying your trip around Australia. I like many aspects of your van build - nice work. Maybe I could offer up some suggestions for our Australian conditions. 1) Any living INSIDE the van is going to be REALLY HOT in Australia. I would put a good side awning on any van so you can cook and sit outside under shade. (A company named Drifta makes a great side awning that covers the whole side and back area.) - NOT trying to plug this company, but the product and concept is really good. Most awnings just cover the side or the back. 2) A good Mosquito / Fly screen is really needed in OZ. Anything that can completely seal off the open tail door area and side door is GREAT. Open windows with screens, and even a sky light/vent is really a must in summer. (Mess with magnets can work well.) 3) I might not have chosen a Kia van - SORRY! (Parts for Kia may not be easily available outside major cities in Australia. Resale may also not be as strong as the Toyota Hiace, VW Transporter or Hyundai. (Good quality camper fit-outs do hold there value quite well in Australia. Young travellers and retired travellers buy them.) 4) Your kitchen looks great AND SAFE. (BEWARE of the Butane portable cookers in Australia. Whilst they are cheap, there has been many recalled due to explosions. ( I believe if they are MADE AFTER 2015, they should be fine and comply.) www.recalls.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/1069239 5) Love your solar system and 240V ports. I would have gone for two panels rather that one big one - just in case one is damaged. (I would also go with an ALLOY roof rack. There are ALOT of KILOMETRES to travel over here, and weight = more fuel). Fuel is expensive in Australia, an even more so in rural areas. 6) As for Sat Nav units. Many of the in-car sat nav systems are after-thoughts. I would buy a NEW $100 Tom Tom for major coastal / populated areas, and a Hema map system for anything really off-road. Sorry for the extended comment - I hope it helps someone.

This comment is so helpful!! I am about to move to Australia and do this myself, was going to get one of these vehicles but maybe not after your advice!! What vehicle would you suggest getting? Is the toyota hiace the best option because any of them I have seen have many many kilometers on them, my budget is about $5000 aud too so not large by any means!! Lastly would you get petrol or diesel for touring Australia? Specifically the east coast from melbourne to cairns, cheers!!

Such an honest comment. I’m studying at the moment and working part time. Saving for a house with the husband and also saving for a Toyota hiace. We don’t have children yet but with my budget and time I’m happy to do all this by the end of next year. I’m in the planning phase of my design so it will be fun and frustrating at the same time when building it. I agree with the aussie summer especially out in the country you’ll need an aircon system to keep cool and comfortable not to die in the hot summer months. Good luck and safe travels

+Nathan Connell the seat is attached underneath on three heavy duty sliders (as in drawer sliders) and the back is attached to the seat with two ratchet hinges (we bought these off Ali Baba). The hinges lock in place at three different angles to enable the seat to sit up. As the whole bench slides forward, it rests about 2 inches on the other bench. Hope that makes sense!
