The oil you chose is the best you can get for the $. I’ve tried many others and the ultra platinum burns off less and keeps my engines cleaner longer than any others. I use it in all 4 of my vehicles. If you have higher milage I would suggest putting 1qt of some type of high mileage oil to conditions the seals to avoid leaks. The ultra platinum doesn’t have seal conditioners added like high mileage oils do. Just FYI to anyone who reads this.

The carbon build-up on the intake valve or in the combustion chamber that is being talked about is caused by the type of gas and the lean conditions the epa requires to pass emissions requirements not as much the oil being used. First of all, if the engine is functioning properly and is not a high mileage motor, the combustion chamber should be almost completely oil free when the cylinder fires. So there shouldn't be enough oil burned to cause any carbon deposits. The valve seals keep oil from entering the chamber between the valve stems and the valve guides and the compression rings on the piston keeps the thin film of oil on the cylinder, put there by the oil ring, from entering and being burned. The main causes of carbon is because engines run so lean, which causes excessive heat in the combustion process and the fuel ,again caused by the epa, is poor quality, no matter what brand, that it doesn't burn completely and you get carbon. The excessive heat and lean conditions can cause the spark plug electrodes to partially burn away sometimes. The best thing you can do to prevent build-up is to make sure your plugs are replaced and gap set to specs, always double check, don't just rely the gap that came from the box. Some engines now call for plugs to be changed 40,000 miles or less and some at 100,000 or more. Always read the owners manual and follow instructions. Also check when coil packs and plug wires if it has them need replaced . If check engine light is on, find out the cause immediately and repair. Some sensor failing can cause carbon build-up. The main thing different oil can cause is sludge build-up in other parts of engine, than combustion chamber. This is from cheap oil without proper detergents. The argument between synthetic, blend and fossil has endless arguments, opinions and facts for all sides. Just make sure to use recommendations from factory on weight and a trusted brand. If the manual calls for a specific brand or blend use that if not use what brand makes you happy. Just don't compromise on weight, follow manual and you'll be fine. One last thing, when you start using one brand don't switch unless absolutely necessary. From years of experience, some engines get set in their ways and they don't like change. Good luck and enjoy your Kia. It is a fine looking vehicle

All engines have blow by which on a GDI engine can cause intake valves to carbon up unless using a duel port and direct injection system like Toyota or Ford. The only solution is and oil catch can or every once in a while doing an expensive valve cleaning, but with an oil catch can you will never have to clean the intake valves!
@scorpiojuan19664 жыл бұрын
Sorry but you not completely right... problem is the oil. Heres why: One of the most efficient ways for a gasoline engine to operate is to use direct injection. LSPI can only happen in engines using gasoline direct injection technology. So, what is LSPI and why does it happen? When the fuel is injected in the combustion chamber it may form a liquified solution with the thin residual layer of oil that sits on the cylinder wall. This fuel-oil solution is then pushed upwards by the piston during the compression stroke and the pressure may cause it to ignite, thus resulting in an unplanned combustion pressure wave. This is the LSPI event. Afterwards, the spark plug ignites the remaining fuel-air mixture that results in a second combustion shockwave. The combined force of the shockwaves is enough, in the long run, to create cracks in the piston and eventually to cause sections of the piston to break away completely. Realizing this problem, engine manufacturers turned to oil companies for help. Oil companies changed their additive packages in such a way that would prevent the fuel-oil mixture from combusting and thus preventing the uncontrolled combustion. The American Petroleum Institute introduced a supplement to their API SN specification - called API SN Plus - that also includes tests to verify that the oil protects against LSPI. And as someone earlier mentioned, the catch-can will help too..

Was at a Kia dealership today looking for an alternative to the old minivan. Came across a Telluride on the sales floor. I was impressed by the amount of 2nd AND 3rd row space in the vehicle. Then I opened the hood and saw the dreaded three letters no car enthusiast who likes to keep his cars forever wants to see... GDI. That was a deal breaker. This is the epitome of planned obsolescence engineering. If I'm buying internal combustion it's MPI all day. I was hoping this had a low power stage MPI setup to keep the valves clean but no dice. Also no sale. I keep looking.

Do you potentially know how much trip lengths affect carbon buildup for a GDI? My mom is looking at getting a Telluride but she also only travels a mile back and forth for work. Currently she drives an older highlander and hasn’t had problems, but that’s a simple port injected V6.
@freebehindbars8654 Жыл бұрын
Carbon starts building mile one. I’ve seen a 6k mile engine with obvious buildup on the intake valves. A catch can from new and you’ll be fine. It’s actually a good engine, if not for that design flaw.

How often do you suggest oil change with the full synthetic oil on the Telluride to avoid build up?
@koreymayo88844 жыл бұрын
Full synthetic every 5 to 6k, maybe 8k at the most, but if you are concerned about GDI causing carbon build up on intake valves then all you have to do is install an oil catch can in the vacuum line after the PCV valve and drain the oil catch can every time you change the oil! Using a good oil will not stop blow by and carbon deposits, but an oil catch can will!

I think the carbon buildup issue also depends on the engine design, some engines get very bad buildup even with frequent quality oils changes and fuels, the VW 2.0T, Hyundai 2.0T and 2.4 for example. Car makers are starting to realize that dual injection is the way to go, and Nissan, Ford, Hyundai (2020 Sonata and Venue), Audi have all recently introduced models that have both direct and port injection.

Gdi are not bad engines the trouble is you have to do a GDI fuel cleaner it has to go through the actual engine not the gas tank like regular engines because it does the Pistons don't go in and out on a GDI engine so those cleaners will not go in and work on a gdi engine. Oil change and a gdi dealer cleaning will keep the carbon whare down

which castrol type didn't meet the standard? I use edge and megatec.
@ManicMarkets5 жыл бұрын
I believe the only Castrol that meets/exceeds ACEA A5 was the Titanium. Megatec meets the SN Plus standard: msdspds.castrol.com/bpglis/FusionPDS.nsf/Files/4E042401C11971F980258297004677F3/$File/BPXE-9UE8M3.pdf ACEA is really a European standard and I anything SN Plus in the doughnut should be fine per the owners manual. But they do list that as a - will work if ACEA A5 is not available in your area. I'm sticking with oils, for my purposes, that meet ACEA A5.

Funny how when I asked about which oil to use in mine they said Synthetic blend. I haven't found a blend that meets the ACEA rating of A5. They did the first oil change and told me they used Motorcraft. I found out later they used an oil called Total( Never heard of it). The highest rating that oil had is is A3. So they are going against their own warranty standards. I haven't found very many oil change places that carry blend so I'm going to full Synthetic. I have 2018 optima. I change oil at 3700 mi,es, which is the ‘ extreme’ service interval recommended by KIA. I use this interval so they can never use as an excuse to void the warranty, as I do drive in rust belt of USA. I use Penziol Platinum Plus full synthetic, as from my research, I do believe it is best for these gdi engines. I have used Mobil one full synthetic, but penzoil seems to appear cleaner longer than the Mobil. ALWAYS use KIA OEM filters! Any other filter will void the warranty! I know, total BS, but don’t take any chances, dealer holds all the cards in said situation!

@ManicMarkets7 күн бұрын
@@user-uy4hr2gy2p it should be - but some dealers will do a “cheap” oil change because people don’t want to pay 100 for an oil change. In that case they may use an OEM filter, but will use a cheaper oil and then tell you to come back more frequently. In that sense you still pay the same money or more because of the number of oil changes you do a year.

Will it give you more HP if you use high octane gas?
@ManicMarkets5 жыл бұрын
no. just more resistant to knock. You should and can run 87 Octane in the telly. Just need to make sure it has top tier detergent additives in the gas you buy. If it doesn't then you'll want to add them during a fill up. Buy the bottle from Kia. However, I think most gas stations in the big cities and bigger brand names all sell quality gas with top tier additives.

Speak to the specs and why they are important for GDI enginees. Who cares about talking about a few brand oils; it doesn't matter. Its all about the oil spec listed in the car manual and the oil.
