The part where the owner smiles maniacally when the chef gets dressed down by Gordoon juxtaposed by Gordon's praise of him when he makes one of his own recipes and then seeing her glare at the burger is just... chef's kiss, that was one of the most cathartic thing's I've ever witnessed.

Then later the chef made Gordon his own burger recipe and praised it and the woman was staring daggers at the burger while Gordon was eating and then even fake gagged and spit it out when she tried it. It wasn't pretending, her dissonance is so strong that her brain tricked her into thinking it tasted revolting, it happens for real. I actually have a hard time eating pineapple if I think about it too much before I swallow, the longer I take to swallow, the harder it takes to swallows it. I'm not sure where the behaviour comes from but it's been with me as long as I can remember. (I love the taste of pineapple, it just happens when I try to swallow pineapple flesh.)

A lot of people seem to think Gordon Ramsey can’t be doing a very good job since the vast majority of the featured restaurants fail without considering the fact that all of the restaurants were already failing and all of them would have failed without him. Just the fact that he managed to save some of the restaurants proves that as long as the owners and staff are receptive to his methods and willing to put in the work they can succeed.

It's also SO HARD to keep a restaurant open, even when things are going well. Living in a major city, I've seen some exceptional restaurants come and go - some only having a few years of success. So many factors in play, even if the food and service is top-notch.

Like in 99% of the episodes the reason the restaurant is failing is because of some deep issue between the people running it. Think about it: if the people running a failing business were rational people and had good relationships with each other, if someone tells them what to change then they would just do it and it’s an easy problem solved. But this is a TV show so I bet they’re deliberately looking for the most deranged people 💀 it’s why Ive always thought that Gordon should just forget the cooking and get a whole team of psychologists instead. Poor guy is acting as a counsellor for half of the episodes

There a key part of this story that is kept to a small minimum in the show. Alan's father was a notorious gangster. A killer. Alan was raised in a world of cognitive dissonance, where gangsters constantly pretend they are not evil human beings profiting off the exploitation of others. His madness is part of his upbringing. There is no excuse I know for Jenn, except she seemed to fit into his world of deceit and insanity. The saddest thing is that, since Alan's dad was dead, and Alan was apparently NOT in the gangster business, Daniel, the grandson, could have been saved from the madness, except that Alan had never apparently developed a sense of morality. you could argue that a murderer can't teach you that, but Daniel knew what kind of life he wanted, and his parents destroyed his happiness, on purpose, over selfish, foolish, nonsense.

I binged _so much_ Kitchen Nightmares during covid. Nearly every restaurant it’s the same problem: the owners are in denial. And it’s usually centred around a broken family. Gordon is a glorified therapist the entire show.

I have seen all of the episodes of Kitchen Nightmares and Chef David Blaine's situation has always made me mad and so sad for him, he was one of the only chefs in this show who was obviously talented and could cook very well but yet it was the owners who wouldn't allow him to do his job. The icing on the cake for me though was Chef David getting a 9/10 on his burger from Gordon Ramsay, thankfully someone gave talented and under appreciated chef David a moment to shine that he truly deserved

If you haven't already, it might help you to learn about personality disorders (i.e. narcissist, borderline, antisocial, and psychopathy), and if your parents meet those criteria it may give you some understanding and strength. I am an adult child of personality-disordered parents and it freed me so much to learn this. Find reliable sources since there is a lot of misinformation about narcissism out there. I recommend KZbin channels such as: Dr Ramani Surviving Narcissism (Dr Les Carter) Ross Rosenberg Michele Lee Nieves Coaching Prof. Sam Vaknin

His walking breakdown is one of the best examples I've ever seen of someone who has basically been emotionally tortured to the point of a total breakdown by narcissist parents. You can see that it's absolutely tearing him up inside that his parents don't care, that they keep abusing him without remorse, and he can't understand it. And his mother's displays of fake caring only distress him even more. I know what that feels like and it's horrific, and very difficult to explain to others how confusing and painful it is.

I'm Polish on my dad's side, and I assure you mushrooms aren't important to the Poles. If there's one thing Poles especially love, it's potatoes. Well, I'm born and raised in Poland and I assure you mushrooms ARE really important to us, in a sense, that we value them very much. The craze for mushroom gathering in the fall season is like nothing else. For 2 months straight our social media pages are full of people showing how much mushrooms they gathered that day, and some go everyday if they can. A lot of people from the cities will go a long way, just so they could gather mushrooms themselves. Forest mushrooms are a very important part of polish cuisine, to the point that you are considered weird if you don't like them. Of course, we eat a lot of potatos, but we don't especially love them, that's just a common food. And even talking about everyday foods, we consider bread the most important. We love our bread.

As with many other people, I feel like your videos have genuinely helped me improve my life. I found you back when you mostly posted about food (your channel grew fast, holy...) and have since stopped eating as much fast food. I've stopped taking so many sugary drinks, and try eating vegetables and fruit instead of chips/cookies as snacks. My favorite local fast food chain opened a restaurant in my neighborhood so it's HARD, but whenever I'm tempted I go back to channels like yours, Greg Doucette, My Thoughts Will Probably Offend You, etc. and you guys put me back on track. Videos analyzing negative behavioral patterns has also helped a lot; it's easy to blame others and say you can't do something because of external forces. It's an easy way out, if you will. Sure, it's harder for some of us than others, but in the end, all the help and support means nothing if we don't help and support ourselves first, and sometimes it means getting out of the comfort zone and accepting we've failed, and that's okay.

​​​@@maenad1231 if you grind it yourself right before cooking it and use prime cuts as the source meat and wash it off before you cut it into cubes and use clean cutlery and a clean meat grinder, then it's possible to do so and still be pretty safe. no one does that, though. most ground beef is from meat reclamation processes after all the good cuts have been removed and are likely to cross contaminate with effluent and so on from the carcass, due to the way they try to remove the last bits with high pressure water, keep workers going at a frantic pace with poorly maintained tools, and so on and so on. blah blah blah. there's shit in the meat. cook it.

The biggest problem with cognitive dissonance is that it is self inflicted, as an ego defence mechanism. And such people who employ it to avoid having to face uncomfortable truths about themselves, often surround themselves with enablers who buy into their delusions, and that only further embeds the cognitive dissonance. The more people hide from reality, the harder it becomes for them to face it, as they are the only ones who can break themselves out of their loser mentality and get themselves going in the right direction. It is heartbreaking to have people in your life that you care about who do the above, and realising that it would be in your own best interests to cut them off instead of wasting time and energy trying to help them when they clearly don't want to be helped. This is easier or harder depending on who they are are what their relationship is to you (family, partner, friends etc). It is the fallacy of sunken costs, and they will drag you down with them if you keep trying. Sometimes cutting them off can work (as it gives them a big shock to their psyche), but it most commonly results in a sense of victimhood and blame shifting to avoid having to take any responsibility for their own behaviour. The sad reality is they are the only ones who can help themselves, but they tend to work far harder protecting their delusions to avoid having to admit to anything wrong on their end (and surrounding themselves with enablers who are easily manipulated by playing the victim is one of their preferred methods).

I think everyone has cognitive dissonance in some way or another. Usually happens when you feel prideful to a fault and don't want to swallow that pride down and accept that you're wrong about something.

I don’t think Daniel’s family was necessarily entirely in denial about his unhappiness, I think they didn’t CARE. Dad was in the early stages of dementia here, but clearly there was a narcissistic man with antisocial behavior under the creeping fog. And Mom is something, I think, far more toxic, because she isn’t as clueless as her husband. She’s borderline all the way, combative, sadistic, and cruel. The son is the one truly in denial, but not entirely. He sees the futility and tragedy of his situation, but he hurls himself in the midst of it anyway in some hope of retrieving his inheritance. The girlfriend means well, but she too is in denial. You cannot argue with psychopathic people, you cannot enlighten them. Walk away from people like these parents and leave them to their destruction. Help from afar, maybe, with elder care and the like. But stay away.

Compared to this I remember a Kitchen Nightmares episode where there were two twin brothers that ran an Italian restaurant, one in front and one in back. They both seemed to quickly grasp the fact that they sucked and one even cried on camera before they turned themselves around and did amazing by the end. They were leagues more accountable and mature than Alan over here.

Getting your book now. ADHD, GED and seasonal depression has sent my life to such a level that I cannot focus on nearly anything mentally stimulating. Not work, not school, not finance, not even personal goals or hobbies (other than gaming, but that's not a hobby, it's a dependancy). I should be properly medicated to move away from this cycle but I can't control my behaviour long enough for any good habits to stick. It's a horrid circle; the ADHD makes me forget the habit, the anxiety punishes me for failing to change, and the depression keeps me from believing that solving this problem is worthwhile - or even possible. Bad habits have ruled my life since 3rd grade, so any insight on how to get good ones is sorely needed. Not even therapy was super effective since they only talk about what I want them to talk about, rather than addressing what is most important. I hope I have enough attention span to read and use your book properly, because by god I need it.

He might be innocent but in the grand scheme of thing, his family should never had this money, other family shouldn't have been extorded/scammed out of it 2 generations ago, further reinforcing inequality over the years. Okay, I KNOW you are branching out and doing things other than fitness stuff but the Show Fit to Fat to Fit is a perfect fit to your request about shows that highlight delusions or mental blocks. While Season 1 is arguably the best the episode with the Hollywood photographer is the one that really is aggravating in terms of mental gymnastics. At any rate, if you haven't seen that show, even if you don't do a review on it, just give it a watch. Really great!

Cognitive dissonance is an intense interest of mine because I was raised in a religion full of it. Somehow I was able to get out and I have spent over a decade examining my beliefs and behaviors. @5:40 this video was great. this particular point is going to help me when discussing my father in the future. I was with my aunt Kathy and I was saying my dad had to be 'stupid' for the way he was with me in my teenage years. I should have said that his cognitive dissonance no longer allowed us to communicate. tbh I knew about cognitive dissonance but this video mashing together a familiar hells kitchen episode with a familiar mental term to help explain details of a mental condition is a great way to present a topic.

This is so much more than cognitive dissonance. This is narcissistic abuse, and unfortunately with the son being the only child, dealt with the brunt of both of the parents narcissism. I really hope the son has started therapy. It will be a long road for him, but I hope he can find the peace of mind he deserves. It's hard at times, but don't ever carry other peoples issues for them, especially the ones who claim to love you.
