This is a perfect example of how good a game can be with poor graphics. The speed. the feeling of actually pushing the ball, the control you could have in the shoot... This game was insanely good.

The poor graphics are specifically what make it so good - the use of palette-swapping techniques allow the game to run super-fast, eliminating lag and connecting the player ot the action.

@@Okinawatrip The interesting thing is this is not a game to emulate. I found I couldn't play it emulating. Got a MiSTer box and a CRT TV and I improved immensely. Also a decent microswitched joystick is a must-have.

@@BitmapsRetro how come emulating didn't work? Never really tried emulating. I remember I had a microswitched joystick and yeah, it was unplayable without one of those.

@@Okinawatrip It works in that it runs and looks ok, but the lag takes away much of the connection with the game. Kick Off 1 and 2 (and Player Manager for that matter) are particularly vulnerable to that because of how they're tuned to within an inch of their lives. It has a direct measurable effect on my performance in the game and I can feel it. Some games you really want to kill any lag, Kick Off is very much one of them.
