Steve, wow what a topic!! I joined a local club to hopefully learn about bass fishing, I’ve boated and fished my whole life, just not bass specific with lures. I know our local waters probably better than anyone boating wise. I fished the first 3 derbs, and won all three . I’m not sure how or why, KZbin research and etc! I’m an old guy, 57, and not a scoper. I was really happy for myself but no one else really was. The crybabies ended up finding some rule violation like did not attend a meeting and voted me out!!! I had to let it all go and went back to my true love, saltwater. It’s a much longer story but that’s the short version!

Tournament fishing is about rewarding the one that wins no matter what. Then after you win too much you are followed, named a cheater, and/or banned. Not really much fun in it other than the first few times you win and you have a whimsical sense of hope that one day you'll be the next KVD and not have to work a dead end job. The whimsical sense of hope phase varies for everyone, but it is the best part of the tournament chase.

Hey Steve. To be honest, I have fished a tournament since the eighties, lol, so I am a little out of touch with what is happening today at the local level. Back then I fished with a partner out if his boat. But I remember the dock talk about certain individuals cheating because no way they were that much better than the rest of us. And there was complaining to officials to try and have teams removed. My partner who was 10 years my senior at the time told guys were just butt hurt about being beat. And I think that still holds true today because people are just people in the end. I remember heading these young bucks called the Johnsons fishing the Ontario circuits long before being in the elites or maybe even the FLW. But if guys head they signed up others would not bother to enroll in the tournament. Some guys are just skilled and that's all. In the end you should not be banded from an open tournament just because you are good at what you do. You just need to step up your game. Ok tight lines. Regards, Steven.
@nichardenfishing4 күн бұрын
You can definitely argue fairness and unfairness on both sides, regardless of your own opinion. I personally would want the guy to fish, but I understand also that it will lead people away from entering those tournaments. There used to be a local club where I live that the same guy won every single tournament. Entries went from 20-25 boats, to only 5 or 6 boats, to having tournaments canceled for only 2 boats showing up, to the whole club disbanding. 2nd place was all over the board and there could have been multiple winners, so it could lead you to think, well if the one guy was told he couldn’t compete, would there still be a club? Still doesn’t change my opinion on allowing the man to fish, but the closest tournaments to this area are a ways off, and the lakes this club fished were within a few miles from my house so I could practice and my work schedule worked perfectly for them.
@cuivre20044 күн бұрын
The club closing up is likely what they were thinking. They have the right to refuse and entry-it is a privilege-not a "right". Piss one guy off and keep the rest of the membership happy? Nor really a hard decision, regardless of how it looks. Many of these winners aren't really social and helpful people, in my experience-they are money grabbers. Period.

I fish a local weekly fishing tournament, and there are 2 young studs that fish it as well. You know, the Phoenix boat, live scope and all that. And people joke, there are the guys you got to beat. We have not beat them yet, but we came darn close, we lost the fish that would have won it. Now these guys put the time on the water during the week as well. They are just good anglers. I figure I am donating to the cause, but I enjoy the competition. We have won big bass which is nice as well and generally pays pretty good.

I played professional golf on a regional level. A majority of my fellow golfers used the same TYPE of equipment as the elite golfers. So we enjoyed the competition. It came down to the persons skill level and technique. In bass fishing, not everyone has the same equipment, and that can be the decider. BUT the rules should be changed if there is a problem. I'm sure the director received a lot of calls from not happy club members.

This video takes me down a rabbit hole of questions: is the club tournament one for the official members of the club; i.e. 30 or 40 local guys who fish amongst themselves and their tournament is for them only? Or, is it a tournament open to the general population of anglers? Different situation between the "North Austin Basswhackers" and "Central Texas Bass Tourneys, Inc." Just looking at the first example, I'd say the club president (or secretary or whoever chairs the meetings) should throw the idea open to the club general membership with a secret ballot vote. If it's the second example, I'd want the CEO to talk to an attorney to look at the bylaws. Bottom Line is: Is this about money? Or hurt feelings? Jes' askin', is all... 😅
@GetUrFishOn26 күн бұрын
I think it's about hurt feelings in this case. I think the trail is open to anyone who pays. Herb, this was going to be the video for yesterday, but the angler doesn't want this to be a big deal and I am not sure I should post this. What do you think? Honestly? Thank you!!

I like the fact that we fished for the same money each month even if anglers were absent. I always strive to be better so when somebody is on a winning streak I want to beat him. It just makes you a better fisherman weather you win or loose. So if you are a member of the organization in good standing you should be able to fish. Thank You

I had the same thing happen to me many years ago when I was guiding full time. My partner and I would win at least 3-4 tournaments a year and the director decided that we were no longer aloud to fish because as a guide we had an unfair advantage. It sucks
@lightningmusky52864 күн бұрын
Do they suspect he is doing something not legal? Is it just a small local tourney of weekend guys versus maybe a guide or tourney angler that’s on the water far more than they can be? Reduce the $ maybe and see if $25 or $30 tourneys are the way to go. Make more about fun and less about $ so if he wins he wins not that much guys would miss. If one guy is destroying a league you got to make some sort of change before banning a guy.

I’ve been on both sides of this situation. Fishing tourneys often and winning with regularity, I was asked not to return. Kinda sucked since I was an average working Joe but I went elsewhere. I’ve been in tourneys where people worked in the industry while I worked my desk job 70 hrs a week. Everyone was about the same but eventually had a few guides on a specific lake start competing when we went to that lake, no other lake. They won with great regularity as you would expect. It pretty much took the fun away from 95% of the people in the tourney and I don’t think the guides were there for the fun….it was just a money grab. No social input at all. I left that group and I heard they asked the guides to stop shortly afterwards but come to other lakes…..they didn’t. Even beyond that, when growing up I used to be in local tourneys from my John boat. I competed but eventually everyone was getting blown away. I grew up in Gainesville and The guy that won it was named Shaw 😂.

When Bass Pro Shops had that million dollar tournament a couple years ago I was not eligible to fish since there rules declared that I was a “pro”! I haven’t fished a pro level event since 2007. In 1991 I was the Federation National Champion. The following year there was talk about not letting “pro” anglers fish the Federation. I didn’t think it was fair in either case. My present club holds some opens and Mike Iocanelli shows up once or twice a year and we are thrilled to have him! If a skilled angler thinks that the event you are putting on is worth fishing you should let him fish!

Unless someone is caught cheating, I think it's BS to ban people from fishing. That being said, this kind of thing has been going on as long as I've been fishing local tournaments and I'm 63. Personally it means a lot more to me to do well against someone I know is a great stick. I'm not looking for a participation trophy and/or fishing against anglers that are less experienced... but there are a lot of people that fish tournaments that want exactly that; and easy field to compete against. I don't have any problems with limitations on equipment; i.e. boats, motor size, electronics, or even lures because everyone has the same rules but just banning someone because they are more accomplished is downright babyish.

There are so many questions to be asked that can change things around a bit. I think it if pretty fair if the tournament has a "No FFS" rule if thats what they want. Also a "only tin rig" rules. We have an Eletric boat only tournament trail here in NC. I just don't agree with banning people for no real reason other than they are winning? Maybe then up your game. Hopefully this angler finds a better place to compete. I have heard numerous Pros talk about anglers who could dominate the trail but either financially or for other reasons never compete.

Also tournaments are about consistency and collective points I think our 3rd place guy is a non boater but he’s a good fisherman and consistent. As a new tournament fisherman you need to set realistic expectations with the understanding you need to get better. Last year was my first and I had a goal to be top 15 yet I ended up 19th. This year I’ll push for top 10. It’s time to get better not bitch that others are better than me.

It’s a no win situation for the tournament director. You either appease the whiners and ban the dominant guy, or you watch participation drop. On the other hand if you enter a local Tuesday nighter and win the vast majority of the nights maybe it’s time to move up to the next level and let those guys have more balanced competition. It’d be like letting a touring pro golfer play in the local men’s league.

So some tournaments don't allow certain people who have won and competed on bigger events and will not let them enter and cherry pick their events for a payday. Some tournaments are 'Weekend guys" who can't afford to fish the bigger tournaments, but have moved past fishing just club level events. If an organization says sorry move on, it's time for you to move up and fish bigger events. But some wanna be a big fish in a small pond.

They may realize that people will quietly quit participating in the tournaments-without bitching and whining. Then the tournament series will totally die. The guy who wins all the time should show better sportsmanship and impose his own "mercy rule". What good would it be if the series shuts down due to lack of participation? That is what has happened to many clubs-this club it just trying to prevent their club from becoming defunct.

The magic word FAIR , my opinion it's based on every angler being able to compete and when certain technology is not considered fishing and or to expensive for most there has to be rules made for everyone to make it FAIR, club directors know by now that FFS is a big problem and needs to be addressed, just because you are allowed to use something doesn't make it right, that's what club meetings are for to discuss issues that comes up among anglers, l fish tournaments ,been doing them for 30 years , l am not a ffs fan but there should be some kind of agreement that makes it fair for all, not one scoper will help in th is matter, it's the non scopers trying to even the playing field, tells me the scopers are in it for the money and lost sight of what it's all about , l never hear a scoper try to help in this matter at any level of tournaments fishing

Easy answer. Let the best kid on Toho go against the elite series in Florida. Let him enter the one event. Don't make him mortgage his house to travel the whole country doing 8 tournaments. Because he will never do that. So it's lost money to BASS and lost opportunity to him. And don't make him beat up on local guys who aren't that good. Allow him to showcase his talents what he knows about Florida bass. The best of the best on any lake should be the winner. Not the best of the traveling guys. Cody's money is green. Let him enter. Nobody knew who Brandon Palanick was when he was just a federation guy. There is untapped talent all over the country.

In some sports they call that cherry picking. You don’t want to play the local basketball tournament against Michael Jordon. I was in sports all my life. The athletes that did not move up to the next level. To intentionally win every event. Have always been looked down upon. Like you mentioned. You always want to go against the best. If someone is winning every time. Then it is time for them to move up to prove themselves. However I do not think they should be kick out. Rather questioned why are they not moving up. Maybe add a repeat winner division. So they can still enjoy the local tournament. But fish against like skilled anglers.

There's always, politics in clubs, regardless, if $ is involved. When tournaments are teams, there's always skill, equipment differences, that are judged by some founding members. Have seen it, many times, over many clubs, in several states, from 10 boats, to 40 boats. Some are money, and some were not. I'm as competitive, as anyone, even when my wife, and me fish. I tell where and what to use, and she beats me, from the back of the boat, sometimes, because her wiggle is better. Maybe, the bikini, and my rod choice.
