I will always say this: Don't come out of the closet until you have a back-up plan. I didn't come out until I was 21 I had a job and a place to live in-case my family disowned me. Luckily my family didn't care and it was one big gay happy rainbow.

I would say just be logical about it. If you know your parents are homophobic you should be very careful and have a back up plan. Don't just do it and hope that it will magically work out perfectly. It might do, but your safety is more important than wishful thinking that could see you in danger. But if your parents are understanding and open minded then I'd say go for it. My parents we fine, maybe slightly biphobic but they would never disown me and I knew that.

Unfortunately, that doesn't always work. When I came out, I was very knew to the whole LGBTQ+ thing and I didn't know that there was such thing as homophobia. How I saw it was that being gay was simply like being straight, you liked who you liked and therefore, I was fairly open about it. I learned about homophobia the hard way and there was no way for me to go back into the closet, even though I desperately tried to.

I am a bisexual Muslim girl and so happy that you touched on this subject because probably if I ever come out I'll be kicked out too.. so I won't ever¿ or I won't until I can depend only on myself for my life. I don't know what I am going to do but I am really comfortable in my own skin, my close friends know they are supportive and like you guys said they are family too! Love you guys!

Hi Courtney. I absolutely "Adore" you. You are so genuine and have amazing composure. You are absolutely beautiful as well. Can you please do a make up tutorial because I find your artistry so appealing. And have you ever thought of doing books on tape because your voice is so soothing. Thank you for just being you.

my father didn't kick me out until I was 19 claiming it was because I had lost my job, but the sad thing is he was looking for an excuse to kick me out and we haven't talked in years but he claimed it was ok for me to be myself. My mother took me in (they had been divorced for a long time) and even though she has always preached at me it was wrong for me to be gay, she never turned her back on me when I needed help. it just goes to show some people are hyppocrites and their are those who speak from the heart and may disagree but will always be there for you. its part of the reason I do my "thoughts" show. sometimes you just have to look at both sides of an issue.

Hi Courtney, Im one of those random straight teenage girls you occasionally see at drag shows, but the problem is my parents don't approve of me going. I love the the culture that a drag show has, but my parents don't get why I like them. I am a very open minded person, but my parents are not, how do I get them to see it through my eyes?

I was kicked out of home once. I was 16 and it was because of my boyfriend. It was an unhealthy relationship but regardless, I was kicked out. It was the scariest experience of my life. I suppose one of the biggest things is just to make sure you have a support network, having people you CAN go to, even if it's only for a little while. Trying to maintain contact and work out issues is a good thing to in my opinion (unless of course your family is directly abusive, then go to a professional to help), so you at least know where everything stands. I've heard from a lot of people who don't talk with their families through similar experiences that they usually wonder what's happened, or if it could get better. At least if you resolve, with negative or a positive outcome, it's resolved! You can start to move on and try and get better. Hope this all was cohesive at the very least ^.^;

For me family relations were complicated and although I'm glad I made the decisions I did . . . it's made life hard. My family never technically kicked me out, but they were negligent and abusive in many ways, physical and emotional, to the point I ended up having a meltdown, stopped talking to them because I was too afraid, and ended up on the streets. After they found out I liked guys they made me go to counseling with my pastor, gave me books to read, even talked about sending me to Love In Action (an gay rehab center) . . . I finally went to ORU, a very conservative christian college, as an alternative to that because it seemed to make my mom happier and that way I could stay in college. Though I always tell people, me being gay was the icing on the cake, there was a lot of abuse that happened before that, but I would definitely say that pushed it farther. I still feel embarrassment about how I handled everything, but it is what it is, I can't go back and change the past and frankly, I don't think I should have ever been put in the situation to begin with. Sorry . . . this episode really hit me hard, hit really close to home. Thanks.

See I never got a chance to feel embraced by my family. I totally agree it wasn't their fault as to what happened, but I can never forgive what happened and it sucks. I just wish there was something I could do to forgive them as well as me, but as far as I can tell it'll never happen. But thank you for this episode Courtney. To hear another new view on this has given me a new perspective, and I appreciate that so much.

Very informative segment. Thanks for talking about this issue. There are so many kids in our community that don't have anyone to connect with and just need a positive message of encouragement and you may have giving it to them. We may be hitting main stream in the LGBT world but we're still a baby community and need each other. Stay You Always

Meanwhile when I attempted to come out to my mom she just pauzed for one second to say OK and continued typing. And I was just standing there like, ....Really? This is what I spend three years of finding courage, the right timing and the right words for? I know I am lucky that my family could care less about my sexuality, but I'm glad that I have my "other family" that fully accepts, understands and talks about all aspects of it.

Hey, Courtney where i'm from a local who was gay was bullied relentlessly because he was gay until one day he went to school one day and shot the bully. The bully lived and the kid got like 27 years in prison. In this case supposedly them kid made various attempts to let the school know this was happening. As a youth me myself was bullied daily because of my sexuality and feel like my life would have been different if it had never happen. I hated school and dreaded going because I was even sexually harassed physically being fondled and made attempts to ask for help and the response from teacher was for me to defend myself. I felt as a gay youth it was my fault. Now I am an insecure adult with trust and anger issues. I'd hope as a society we'd evolve but I can tell from that news story we haven't especially in small towns here in America. What advice do you have for the gay youth that are getting bullied and goes in search for help but doesn't receive it...and for adults who were victims of severe abuse caused by bullies that have grown up and still are affected by the trauma?

Me and my mom were really close and I ordered my first chest binder and that kind of stuff and she took me to the police station and tried abandoning me because I was only 13 and it was completely "okay" for her to. She didn't abandoned but she made me wear make up and skirts and my life is a confusing mess right now because I want my chest binders but she won't allow it because I still live in her house so 😞

Honey as a mom to a 10 year old daughter and a 6 yr old son this upsets me so very much for you. I don't get a parent who can't accept their child as they are and embrace the time you have with them. My uncle is gay and I have know it my whole life and a 33 I support the LGBT community so much and teach my kids that you can't help who you fall in love with wether it be the same sex or opposite and I always let them know I love them now and always no matter what happens .

Hi Courtney! First, you're beautiful and one of my heroes. My question is: does one have to be homosexual and biologically male to be a drag queen? Coming from the perspective of someone who is biologically female, but on the neutral/masculine side of gender fluidity in everyday life a majority of the time, I'm really interested in your opinion. I'm also asking because my significant other IS biologically male, pansexual, loves drag queens, and basically has dreams of "one day" when it comes to performing in drag. I would love to see that happen some day, and I'm interested to know what the drag community's take on it might be.

Hi I need a bit of advice. I am Colette and I am 16. I know I like girls and I identify as a lesbian, but sometimes I get confused with my feelings for guys. I have only ever felt comfortable dating girls, I don't want to date a guy and I do not feel comfortable with having a relationship with a guy. Sometimes I feel like I could have sex with a guy, but then the idea can also make me a bit weirded out. Girls feel comfortable but guys are just a lot of confusion!!! What should I do???

sexual orientation isn't black and white it is a spectrum of colours, I think I heard it from Courtney but we define labels, labels don't define us - basically it means that you may not have a label for yourself, just be you. date who you find attractive don't worry if you are gay or bi you are just you no one else.

This is weird... But when I found out my cousin was gay, he actually removed me from his facebook. I didn't care that he was gay, I'm a straight woman and I actually favor drag queens for all the sassy sexiness they exude, and I've been a DJ since I was 15 years old so I'm used to getting along with everyone and don't judge. Years have gone by since I have spoken to him and don't understand why he would have felt the need to flee.
@kcpopoo
@kcpopoo 9 жыл бұрын
truksrok I can't speak for your cousin, but if he was anything like me then he probably did it out of fear of rejection. In his mind, he knew that you knew of him being gay and thought that if you were okay with it then you would have approached him and expressed your support. If he grew up in an environment that considered being gay to be wrong, then he would think lowly of himself and thought "if they wanted to talk to a freak like me, they'll find a way to get to me". He probably took your lack of approach as silent treatment.

There are many appauling comments aimed at LGBT people, especially Trans people and other minorities such as people with dwarfism and i'm sure other people to. Do you think there are other ways to tackle mass hatred towards groups of people who pose no threat to them, such as education?
