I am writing a short story for a secret santa exchange. I just finished a short story for a magazine submission that I'm trying not to think about. I won't find out anything about it for another month. I give myself a 50/50 shot, lol. I have also decided to concentrate solely on short stories this time around. Good luck on the writing!

"...most of the books I have ever written, and I have a lot of books I've written that I've just never published because they're not very good..." Please - and I mean this in the nicest way possible - get over yourself. Everyone absolutely detests what they have written, at some point or other, even books that you likely now consider to be among greatest works, and that is something which must be fought with all your being. Sit down with them, at some point, and have real evaluation of their strengths and weaknesses - you will probably surprise yourself when you ask the question "is this publishable" as most writing can be salvaged in the editing process. Hell, I would vehemently argue that very, very little, no matter the writer, comes out golden. Everything is done in the editing process. Please don't consider them as unpublishable until you have seriously attempted to edit them into shape. In fact, you shouldn't *really* be diminishing their importance in your mind. Think of them merely as unpolished, or unfinished, or awaiting some spark of inspiration, rather than calling them bad. You would likely be absolutely astonished at some of the things which actually make it to publication... As for NaNoWriMo, I'm not participating officially, but I'm hoping to get a non-fiction book done in the next month-and-a-half, or two months - round about 200k-250k, if everything folds out the way I think it ought to.

Good point. I am my own worst critic, so I don't like anything I write. Makes it difficult for me to determine what's worth publishing and what isn't. I guess that's why they tell us to have critique groups and participate in writing events.
