A little tip, if you walk the Sumatran route. Never do it at night. Set the time and distance how long it will take to get to the next place so you don't have to spend the night on the road. As a Sumatran, I know very well how the Sumatran route is, especially for motorcyclists. Be careful on the way. See you in Palembang City

Hi kris, I was a Sumatran rider. 05.00 PM riding in all southern Sumatra area is dangerous is a bit too much for me as a Sumatran rider ☺ don't worry too much kris, the only time you should avoid riding in the southern area is between midnight to dawn (around 11 P.M - 5 A.M) riding between 5 PM - 10 PM still considered to be safe. Always loved such long distance trip which reminds me of my younger days travelling through several countries, exploring rural lifestyles and extremely friendly villagers which are hard to come by in city life. The arrival with a stalker seems dramatics, was pretty worried and turns out to be a great gestures. Friends in Indonesia never failed to impress with their hospitalities. Speaking from my personal experiences as well. Fantastic video Kris. Keep it up.

Specialy in country like Indonesia, in my experience riding in Indonesia, there are so many things on the Roads like Foods even if your motorcycle need to repair, basicly is not like riding in remote places you can not find something . Sumatra is the home for Orang Utans, Elephants, Sumatran Tigers and Rhinoceros. Back to 2014 I visited Way Kambas preservation at Lampung and saw elephants and super rare Sumatran Rhinos ( only 6 left in the world in 2014!), what an amazing experience. Way Kambas preservation is managed by private company owned Taman Safari in Bogor and East Jawa also Bird Park in Bali. The owner has many amazing stories. I was involved in his elephant hospital project. I was staying at Eco-lodge nearby, such a place with beautiful spot with ambience like tropical forrest.

(Sorry for bad English) I have also riding in Sumatra, there is a stigma that Sumatra is not safe at night. But if you arrive in west Sumatra you don't have to be afraid because the roads there are quite safe from begal (I once went from Indrapura to Padang by motorbike at night), it's just that the weather sometimes changes quickly. Finally first update on your Sabang-Merauke trip. Take care on your trip. If you can, don't overspend your money and like you said "don't trust GMaps". Locals do give better advice if you got lost or just asking how long to get to somewhere. Anyways, godspeed, Kris. Hope we can meet after you get to Jawa again.

maybe for some people who didn't experience anything on the road, they would say it was fine. but to be honest, if you can, avoid driving when it's dark. it's quite dangerous to be in Lampung and its surroundings, which is the biggest concern because someone is driving alone.
