I literally laughed out loud when you were talking about your sewing machine (or shouldn't I mention her? ) 😆. I am so glad that I'm not the only one! The number of times I hear my hubby say "you know, the sewing machine can't hear you right? ". Hope all is well now and you've made up 😊. Thank you for all you do. You gave me the courage to start my own channel! You will never know what that means to me. I will forever be grateful to you, Luise & Dephemerember. 😢A tip for your sewing machines. They need to be cleaned, take the metal plate off where the feed fogs are, use a small brush to remove the fluff, and blow hard, i remove everything in this space, bobbin, plate, bobbin holder etc. Clean, and replace, change your needles regularly, if you have an old machine oil it, for the new models get them serviced . Hope this helps. You should also have a manual to refer to for tension. I tend to pull up the botton thread before starting to stitch, as this prevents the knotting underneath. Love the new journal cover Barbara xxx

I made my first junk journal planner a couple weeks ago. From Camden (my absolute favorite!) on the outside and moth study on the inside - and a pocket in the back. I never thought I needed a planner because I don’t do much of anything. So my planner will be for the entire year and each month just has a monthly overview. All of the months are in a single signature, each on the right side of the page, with a two sheet spread layout in between. I have two other signatures that will be used for decorating have specific sections. For instance, I will have an entire section devoted to my cat; when he gets his monthly revolution plus, when he goes to the vet and what for, when I order his food & litter so I can track how long it lasts. I’m going to have a beauty section for when I dye my hair and order make up and other maintenance. I’m going to have a section for a specific bills and finance tracking. A section for when the lawn is mowed, sprayed for weeds, house sprayed for bugs. Monthly dinner with a good friend, monthly dinner with my niece. (It all sounds so silly admitting it out loud, but this is my boring life ☺and I’m looking forward to journaling it.) Some of these things will just be a decorated page with a pretty journaling card where I can put dates down the back of it. And there will be other things as well… I’m looking forward to doing all the decorating and journaling. This is a very long post - I’m sorry! But I am so excited! Thanks for all the amazing videos, tips, encouragement! (Also really enjoying Dephemerember!!)

Hi, I enjoyed reading your comment to Barbara’s video. I was struck by you saying you have a boring life. I have journaled for many years……..from keeping a diary it evolved into junk journalling. I’m now a widow aged 72, with adult offspring, I hardly go out these days, and see very few people. I love writing in my journal, although I don’t have events as such to write about I’m never at a loss. I think we can have a scewed view of our lives and think perhaps others have exciting action packed lives, but in reality a lot of life is mundane. I pray you totally enjoy your handmade planner, and fall in love with writing about your blessed life.

Hi Barbara, before you mess with your tension (which i would only do as a last resort since you are not a really experienced sewer), i would just clean the bobbin case, as has been suggested. The newer machines are often enclosed so you possibly don't need to worry about oiling unless your manual gives you a place to put in a drop of oil. The thing i think may be the culprit is your needle. Sewing on paper will dull your needle so that when you're sewing on fabric after sewing through paper for awhile, the needle will drag the fabric down rather than piercing or separating the threads. Needles are very important for a happy sewing experience.😊

I always have a word for the year. I put the word somewhere in each month. And I base my yearly goals and monthly goals on my word of the year into 4 categories: work, play, health and family/friends. So for example, if my word for the year is "strength" then I ask myself "What does strength look like in my health?" ""What does strength look like in my relationships with friends/family?" Etc. it's a great goal setting exercise!

Such a pretty start to 2025! 2 things that might help you two bridge the gap, 1) be certain you are using the bobbin your machine's manufacturer makes or specifically recommends, 2) make sure your top and bottom threads are the same weight and that the needle has the right size eye. After these, adjust the tension if needed. Have a wonderful Christmas with your BFF, it sounds great to me, but hubby being there would be too!

I love watching you make your calendar, and always get inspired. Last year I decided I wanted to make one too, but by the time I finished January it was already March...hahaha This year (2024) I decided that I would make a "phone photo diary". so when the month is over I look through my photos on my phone. selects the best memories and prints them. My journal has 4 signatures and 9 pages. I make emphera to match the pictures and hand write the stories that go with the pictures. That way I get to use the pictures I save on the phone and never see. I have just made another journal, for the best pictures/stories from 2023. I just looked in iCloud, and was completely frightened when I see that there are 9000 pictures from the last few years. So there is always an extra journal that can be made on a boring rainy day... Thanks again for good and cozy December entertainment.

Hi Barbara - another gorgeous planner. I have kept diaries, journals and planners for decades. None as lovely as yours, or as organized. My New Years resolution is to make one like yours and combine all the above as you seem to have done so well. I have 7 sewing machines (they all do different things) so I know what you are going through. They sometimes gang up in me. But you have to love them, clean them with the little brush that came with it, change the needle periodically, and check tension, especially when you are using paper alone, or with fabric. One of my machines is 50 years old but still goes to work when I ask nicely. Good luck and I sure hope you kiss and make up soon!

When you have a rat’s nest in the bobbin area, when getting the mess out cut more than just pulling. When you are able to, take the bobbin case out and use a new or very clean soft makeup brush and clean out the area making certain you get all stray threads even if very small, out of the area. Put everything back making certain the thread on both the top and bottom are correctly in all required places. Next, before you begin sewing , bring the bottom thread up through the sole plate by hand turning the fly Wheel on the right. Before beginning to sew, hold the upper and lower thread together as you begin sewing slowly. If one of the threads breaks at this point, thre tension is off. The threads should meet in the middle when sewing a seam with cloth. If the thread lays flat on the top, the top tension is too tight. If it lays tight in the bottom , it is the bottom which is too tight. If you are unable to adjust the tension, bring it to a repair person to fix it. It may need oil if you haven’t done that. When sewing with paper there is a lot of fuzz which gets in the works. Just keep a soft makeup brush near the machine to keep fuzz and lint out of the bobbin area.

Love it! Thank you for adding planners to this kit, I used this kit for Feb last year but had to rig up my own planner situation for it! :)

Such a bright and cheerful fabric cover to start the new year. The kit is so pretty too with different looks depending on the paper. I'm so sorry your dear little machine was having a bad day and turned into a princess when you needed a workhorse.

This year I made jj planners each month - trying out simple ideas for each cover, and different lettering etc. I think this year I do want to do a version of what you do - per quarter. I like the idea of the to-do's being on tags rather than the main focus of the pages. Maybe it would encourage me to use my pages to try out ideas from videos or from my own imagination. I also like the idea of trying to have everything in one place. This year I had my monthly planners, several for different themed Bible studies, one for our journaling group and an ideas one. Plus attaching notes etc on the fly! Maybe too, it'll help me show others how to use the ones I make to sell, if I've actually used a more elaborate planner myself. Thanks for always coming up with such beautiful inspiration! Happy New Year 🥂

Hi Barbara. I have just recently (in December 2014) discovered this world of Altered Books. I saw one or 2 videos before landing on yours, and many others since seeing yours. You are BY FAR THE BEST!! Hands down. I’ve not started my first book yet but have purchased all the supplies. I’m very curious how you learned to speak English so well. I’m amazed. My sister-in-law is a born and bred German, married my American brother who only speaks English and even she doesn’t speak English as well as you. So you can see my curiosity. I hope you read this and hope even more that you’ll reply. Keep up the good work you do on KZbin. I think you’re fabulous ❣️I’m sending you a giant hug from Northern Michigan 🇺🇸

Aaaaaw thank you so much for your kind words! I lived in New York as a child and then again in California as a young adult. In between I attend true American International School here in Vienna and worked in American companies for many years. I was even engaged to a US Marine for a while……

Hi Barbara! I’m not much of a planner person…but you make these look so fun, I think I might do it this time for 2025. After dephemerember of course!

The way I gasped when I saw that Marcia Derse fabric! I just started making my first planner! Your videos are definitely my inspiration! (I might even listen to that book! 🫢) Thank you, Barbara. We do not deserve you. ❤️❤️❤️

Always love your journals, Barbara. The machine may not like to stitch on a soft single layer of fabric. Perhaps if you lay paper underneath as you sew, the machine might go better. Good luck! HAPPY CHRISTMAS!

Sewing machines can be Divas at the worst possible times. Mine did the same thing with the thread while I was working on my Dephemeraember items, which was my first ever junk journal but I got it done & embraced the thread messes. I love the new journal & kit. The book looks very interesting, so I will check it out. I’ve read dark romance’s books before but it’s been awhile.

I always look forward to yours “new planner makes”. I enjoy watching you make them very much. Yes, you’ve done it several times, but never gets old to see you glue fabric onto paper bags ❤❤❤ Please continue showing the process videos. Does not need to be the super detailed ones (even though I would not mind ❤), but the one from today was just perfect.

Danke ... 😂😂😂😘

Hi Barbara😍 love watching these videos. I haven’t started my own planer yet, but still I watch faithfully every time. 😍 to be fair, I watch all your videos, but these I just watch for pure pleasure. Thank you for your book review of the 5th blood and ash. I am at book number 4 and will now stop there as I do find all the repetition quite annoying already . You are my new go to for book recommendations although I might have to think twice about Lights out. 😄❤️
