Not necessarily. The decade of the 80s had the social and political economy of AIDS , Reaganomics , and Crack. Yes the music was sort of light hearted and upbeat , but nevertheless you had violence and so forth. No different than any other decade.

Kid and Play were a breath of fresh air. In the late 80s hip hop started going gangster, but they epitomised proper old school hip hop: funky, fun and great story telling. Plus they could dance, and I copied every single one of their moves!

Am from london England was here in 1978 thru Canada i had a ball all over New york went back to canada then london leaving with my family to Brooklyn in 1979 only been back to london twice living in Brownsville meeting Mike Tyson Slap Boxing him a few times we were part of some Diffrent gangs i was supposed to be Rapping but 1 of my partners had to move down south so i decided to just quit tried in the middle 80s as a solo i did hear from my old buddy in 1999 after watching these crazy brothers and how they met i said to myself God works always has a way to put people together everything has a reason

That IS an interesting observation, especially since Paul C was in both these phases. I can see how rap was getting more sample-heavy when Kid ‘n Play came out-not just taking two seconds at a time and sprinkling it over an 808 beat, but taking big chunks and loops-so production was definitely changing.
