People saying he handled this like a gentleman but while that may be true it was not the right move. You have to call the kid out and make him scared a bit. Otherwise, he's not going to learn from this. If anything it will just make him more bold. He will think, "wow the card was in my pocket and the guy caught me yet I didn't get in trouble. I'm so smooth. Telling him I was just keeping it in my pocket and that I wasn't going to steal it worked!!!" Take him up to staff/security, tell them what happened etc. If there are no consequences to his behaviour he won't change. Sad you have to deal with this crap but kudos for being a top notch guy

This is true, kinda wished I said a bit more to the kid in the moment but he was actually talked to by event staff so there was some aftermath to make him hopefully learn.. At the end of the day every body makes mistakes and hopefully he realizes he avoided what could have been a much larger mess and thinks twice next time before he tries again

@@everythingjnj If someone has a stack and they are that fidgety just get the stack of slabs out of theirs hands with customer service, if you aren't going to purchase anything others might want to see those cards. Or are you going to purchase something? I don't like to have to much stuff out at once, when doing deals. Strong boundries and assertiveness go a long way. And once you see him attempting a pocket, immediate i'm going to need those back, and you really should alert security, as he could be ripping of not just other vendors but other people. I've heard horror stories from my people at an LGS I used to play at in Vancouver about deck thieves.

Good catch. He's looking at cards from the other kids tin, placing them next to the tin on the display case. You can see him cover them with his hand as he scoops them up and goes straight to his pocket with them then closes the tin. the other cards he puts down were already picked out from the tin. At 23:13 he came back and asked the kid to look at the same tin again. But i didn't look like the kid gave him permission and opened it anyway.

I used to steal stuff a lot as a kid but learned that I was just being stupid but me and my mom would go to a lot of shows/events when I was a kid and sell stuff, I would watch the kids very closely to make sure they weren't stealing, also would help out other vendors if I noticed something fishy. I started even working for events and would show vendors how easy it can be for someone to steal their stuff and what they could do to possibly reduce it from happening. Even though you hope everyone is a good and honest person when doing these events you will always have people that want your items for free, even adults steal.

In Vancouver, Canada, "Concealing a product" is not theft. The shop clerk legally did everything right, and even didn't accuse the kid of stealing. Accusing him of theft, for concealing a product, in Canada is a tough go. It's weird here, but you could conceal a box in your jacket, and until you leave the store, no crime has been committed, legally. It's a tough battle dealing with theft in Vancouver as a business owner.

I see you guys doing trades at 70-80% but I’m lucky if I get anything over 50% from the local card shops. Is there a reason that I’m missing as to why there’s such a big difference? Is it normal to get better prices at card shows vs the local shops? On a personal note, I respect you for not making a big deal out of that kid trying to steal your card. You knew he was stealing and you had every right to hold him accountable didn’t. Hopefully getting caught red handed like that scares him straight. Good catch Jesse. Sadly, have to keep the head on a swivel nowadays. Used to be the general population considered thievery to be shunned as much as any major crime, but apparently in some circles (youth and adults unfortunately) down-play it or just shrug it off as not a big deal. Stealing is a very personal and violating crime, and should be treated as such by everyone.

While I understand there wasn't a lot you could do because of the kids age, you MUST alert show staff (security if they are present) and have the ALL thieves booted from the premises. If he tried it with you, he most likely succeeded with others.

That kid needs to get called out. They won’t learn. They will regret it later once they turn into an adult.

I don’t understand how you guys just give the slabs out like that to hold. I’d be like I’m only taking 1 out till you’re done with it.

Treat your business like a business. He didn't try to pocket it, he did exactly that. He stole from you and got caught. Then made an excuse and walked away never buying the card he pocketed. Letting you know he never planned on paying. All you did was let him know he can get caught with zero consequences.

you need a wall of shame for people that try to steal. You went way easier on that kid then I would have.
