Walter started it because he had cancer and wanted to leave something for his family, he had to increase it because his wife said he must go for treatment. You have forgotten he had to lie that his friends sent the treatment money? So was it when he was slowly going from cancer that he started enjoying it? You really didn't watch the series from the beginning.
