My theory for why people try and date people behind bars is like people who purposefully only date people from poorer countries (90 fiance). They have this savior complex (usually from insecurity) and think the person they give money or an opportunity to will give them loyalty out of gratefulness. When in reality, you can't by a person's love.

Makes sense that the ex would ask about the girlfriend, she has children with a man that is dating an abusive ex-con. Shawn is clearly easily influenced and has the backbone of a slug, if these are the decisions he makes then i also wouldn’t want him around my kids setting that type of an example. Thats why the platonic friendship of ex’s can work in some situations, you dont have to be in a romantic relationship to let children see a healthy relationship between their parents.
