In this video, I talk about how my kidney stent/ureteral stent was removed after my kidney transplant. I take you through what happened during the procedure and how it felt at each stage.
First, I give details about what exactly is a kidney/ureteral stent and why it's used after a kidney transplant.
I then show some pictures and videos highlighting what happens during the procedure so you can gain an understanding of what happens on the day.
Finally, I talk about how it felt when it was removed and if I was in any pain during and after the procedure.
Hope you enjoy 😊

Just got my stent pulled out less than an hour ago. Had to come back to this video to drop a comment. I can reassure you guys that are worrying about it, that it’ll be okay. It does hurt and is uncomfortable but it only lasts for about 15-30 seconds. Completely tolerable. If you’ve suffered from kidney stone pain this is no where near as bad! Feels great once your stent is finally out too! Whoever’s reading this, don’t be anxious. You’ll feel so much better as soon as it’s over.

Just had my removed about an hour ago. For all my brothers who are worried, let me tell u, dont be. Yes its painful but only where the machine enters and stent is removed, its rather uncomfortable rather than painful. The pain only lasts about 30 seconds and trust me on this. Thanks for the video, I had a stent put in a week before Christmas in the UK, due to current covid restrictions everything is on hold and all routine operations cancelled. I am absolutely struggling with stent, burning, blood when passing water, frequent trips required and lack of control. Honestly driving me nuts. I should be in work 2 days a week despite covid and can't go in also which is not good as I really enjoy being in work. Mentally this is draining me, I find it helps when I lie down or sit down, if standing up it is much worse. Today a month after stent was placed inside I have been in agony and mentally drained. I have had antibiotics and control tablets but don't find them to work. I have tried chasing up for removal a few times but due to Covid not got anywhere which I understand but my issues experienced myself are driving me insane. Hope its removed fast! Stay Safe everyone.

I had 2 kidneys stones which was unpassable. I had stents lots of them. I had them in for 1 month at a time. The second stent was put in because the upper urethra was very inflamed. They are pain for me, lack of control, passing blood , burning. But the area had to heal. As a female the removal is easy....no pain. Anyway, I’m changing my diet to reduce to reoccurrence.

I had a kidney stone removed on Monday and I removed my stent on Friday at home. Today is Sunday. I will not lie, after having time thinking about removing my stent. I was not looking forward to it, especially that anytime the string was moved I felt a bit of pain. I did not take any painkillers after the kidney stone removal. So when Friday came along, I took the pain medicine 1 hour prior to me removing it. It hurt removing it, but not that bad. I thought this is not bad at all, 6 hour later I realized the pain medicine was doing wonders. Once it wore off I felt pain in my kidneys and when urinating. The left over blood clots coming out did hurt. My advice is use the pain medication and take the dose again, do not let it wear off. You will be fine the next day.

Well. I had it removed this week and let me tell you…I worried for nothing. My doctor told me that women usually respond better to the removal than men but I wasn’t sure. Relaxing is the best way to ensure a smooth removal. When it came time to remove, I said a quick prayer and relaxed. Push your hips down into the table, take deep breaths and it is out! No pain whatsoever. 🙏

Here in Delaware they knock you out cold. I was put to sleep to insert for immediate pressure. 3 days later they put me to sleep to remove it, laser the stone out, and replace the JJ stent with a new one. You pretty much go to sleep in pain and wake up with a JJ stent. Feeling a lot better. A ton of discomfort but Now. I remove it myself in the morning. It should be very interesting. There are 2 strings attached to the stent hanging out of me. I have to pull on those until it comes out completely. I appreciate my procedure so much more after hearing your experience.

Had mine removed this week. I was so happy to get it out - it hurt a lot having it in there. Coming out, very similar, except I'm a woman, so maybe it hurt less. They had me put my heels together and drop my knees out. They cleaned all the bits with something that was VERY COLD! Then the surgeon injected some lidocaine. That felt weird and slightly uncomfortable, and burned a little. They cover you up while they wait a few min for the lidocaine to work. The rest was exactly as you described. He went in with the camera, I could watch on the screen. He found the stent, sprayed some water in, told me to take a deep breath, and pulled it out. Weirdest feeling in the world, but also relief. Nurse wiped all the bits clean with a warm cloth. Flashbacks to being a baby and having a diaper change!! Then it burned a little for about 30 min. There was a little blood in my urine after but not much. Pretty much back to normal an hour or so later. Having the stent in me was much much worse than the procedure to get it removed.

I will have mine removed soon.... as I am 5'5" EVERYTHING is small inside me and the initial surgery for implanting that stent was VERY difficult for my doctor. In the operation report he stated he used a 7.5 mm cystoscope.... and that it is the smallest size with an additional tooling-tunnel. There is a kids' version as well but he told me it's too short. So for my removal I will be in TIVA again. 😉

The few top comments saying that this was easy going, well it was. Until, at least for me, I started getting bladder spasms. The spasms didn’t start until about 15 minutes after the stent removal. And they lasted for about 4 hours and it was just as painful as the damn kidney stone I had. Worse pain of my life! I’m on day 3 and I’m still dealing with spasming, but it’s letting up a little. Just make sure to ask for anti-spasm meds and some good pain meds just in case. Although what really has been helping is a heating pad and just laying down and taking deep calming breaths. That’s just my story.

Removing a stent with a string by yourself is a lot easier than going into the clinic and having it removed. I've had both. The one with the string is removed by just a steady pull until it is out entirely. The one without a string requires going into the hospital or clinic and having a urology team literally digging around in your privates.

I had my stent removed on Wednesday 12th and it was really painful, I suspect the 'numbing gel' was really just lubrication as there was no time between inserting the gel and inserting the Cystoscope. The hospital were great and the surgical team very professional but there is surely no way in this day and age that you should have to put up with the pain I felt. The procedure didn't take long but the pain was intense, I could feel the Cystoscope go right into my bladder and then back out again and no amount of deep breathing helped with the pain. Maybe I have narrow tubes or something as other people have had no more than mild discomfort but heaven forbid I get another kidney stone and have to have another stent but I'll certainly be asking for a sedative or even a general when I get it removed.

Why should there be any pain whatsoever? I had a string and the physician assistant just grabbed it and pulled it out. It took about 10 seconds. There was no instrument put into the bladder. Why in the world would they do it any other way? Some doctors even have the string long enough for the patient to pull the stent out them selves. I didn't know what would happen so I was more concerned about the embarrassment of the male doctor seeing my private parts than worry about pain. I wasn't concerned much about that in the operating room because I was all covered up except for the small opening and very drugged. (I woke up completely once that I can remember and raised my head trying to see what was going on and a nurse didn't like that at all. 🤗) I was glad the female physician's assistant removed the stent.

I just got mine removed rn. If you are a man, it is the most pain your penis will ever feel in your life. Pulling it out isn't that painful part, what's painful is the insertion of the device to get it out. Luckily it only lasts for around 30 seconds. You will also feel very intense burning and lots of blood in your urine for the next few days after. Hopes this helps to get a reality check on what to expect.

Hey buddy. Sorry to say the pain for me was worse when the stent was removed. However the pain didn't last long at all. The only pain I felt was when the camera was being inserted inside and when they were weaving the camera through the ureathra and into the bladder. Once the camera is in the bladder the pain is gone but it's very very uncomfortable! Once they've located the stent it's pulled out very quickly and it's all over before you know it. I definitely stressed out more than I should have, it's not a nice experience but it's not the most painful thing I've had done to me during the whole transplant process! You'll be relieved when it's all over. Best of luck! 🤞🏽💪🏽👍🏽

You probably and hopefully have this resolved by now, but my stent was taken out today, and yes, it hurt. A few things hurt but the pain only lasted 30 seconds or so. Afterwards, I still needed to pee every 5 mins or so. At the end end of the stream is this pain, that I can't explain very well. I thought it mmight the spasm they refer to, then occurred to me it might be gravel left by the stone that's going thru ureter. I've been feeling that all evening and it was somewhere between uncomfortable and pain. I took one of the two pain pills I was prescribed to take every 6 hrs as needed. It helped but not completely. I take an ayervedic supplement for pain as needed on an everyday basis. It's called Ashwagandha, 460mg. It calls for 2 at a time, but I took 4. After 7 or so mins, pain all gone. You can get it in any health food store or on Amazon..

Just had my stent removed today. Not as bad having the actual stent in right after the surgery. I definitely felt the stent inside and had a nonstop feeling of pressure in my side. But the bladder spasms after it was removed was the most painful thing through the whole process. Make sure you take your anti spasm meds allllll the way leading up To the stent removal. I stopped taking mine because the spasms stopped while the stent was inside. Big mistake

My urologist wants me to get a stent put in my kidney because it is swollen and there is an obstruction. I have absolutely zero tolerance for pain. I have been through 6 major surgeries and if I decide to go through with this stent thing, I am definitely asking for anesthesia while getting it put in and anesthesia while getting it taken out. My advice, don’t back down. Ask your doctor for the anesthesia both times. If they don’t oblige, find another doctor who will.

@TransplantFitness

Nope it shouldn't hurt mate. The curved ends are so small they don't touch anything as its being pulled out. The tip of your urethra will hurt a little when you pass urine but it will be completely fine after 1-2 days. Good luck mate!

Just got my stent removed today & to be honest it’s not that painful at all. Mostly uncomfortable but easy to tolerate. What helped me was that they put lidocaine gel inside my uretheral and waited 10 mins before the procedure actually started. The doctor came in and he right away got the scope and sticked it in, I felt nothing until it passed the prostate it was a bit uncomfortable. Once in my bladder already he grabbed the stent and pulled it and didn’t feel nothing whatsoever. 2 out of 10 pain I tell you that.

Had my stent removed yesterday. I was freaking out the whole weekend thinking it was going to be a bad day in hell for me. After the procedure was done i realized that I grew a few extra strains of grey hair for nothing. The pain is tolerable. About an hour from the stent being removed that's when some type of pain kicked in. Not to scare anyone but i was in horrible pain. Felt like someone was chewing on my kidney. After looking up so many videos on it, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be BUT let me tell you, when they grab that stent and pull it out relief was the last thing I felt... mind you, I have HIGH pain tolerance but It burned like heck!! So I had mine removed an hour ago (the one withOUT the string). If you're reading this, stay calm, it's almost painless. The doctor applied some numbing gel 10 seconds before starting, I really feared the moment they inserted the probe, but believe me, I didn't even feel it. I felt some discomfort when it arrived at the prostate part, but it was not pain, just discomfort. They inserted some water in the bladder (they told me, cause I didn't feel anything) then they grabbed it and pulled it out. Not gonna lie: when the ring part entered the urethra from inside, touching the prostate, it was a little bit bad, not totally painful, but bad (Same as pulling out a catheter, if you know the feeling). It was over as soon as the stent's ring passed that trait. The rest of the stent being pulled out was TOTALLY painless, they told me they finished cause I didn't feel anything. 30 seconds in total. After cleaning myself I peed some blood and it stung a little bit, but nothing exceptional. I don't feel anything at the kidney for now, I'll update if anything worse happens. Just stay calm, it's 100 times better than you think. Stay strong.
