I love how much the boys love this. As a new Dad, I really hope my son gets into the way I was raised with camping in FNQ Australia. I'm envious of how much harsher your conditions are, in my mind. Never seen anyone start a fire directly on ice. We have a metal thing that holds the wood above the ice and by the end there is a nice hole about six inches deep in the ice. First time I've seen The Outdoor Boys on someone elses channel too.

There are a few tricks to starting a fire directly on the ice. It takes a long time to melt through the ice, but the bigger problem is water from the melting ice at the base of your fire. Ash insulates the ice later in the fire’s life... so tricks to establish a fire are key.
