I like how you combine the filming and the inserted images into one video. This is how a moment (captured in a black and white photo) becomes something special. Great selection of motifs! The joy of taking photos comes across well and watching is just as much fun.

Sarah, I notice you like to hold your camera with the strap free, please try this. With your strap hanging around your head place your right hand through the strap from behind. Do a single twist of your right hand over the strap and then take the camera free of your head. Now if say someone knocked you and hand is released from the camera the camera falls but the strap tightens over your wrist and it does not fall to the ground. I was taught this using Nikon F over forty five years ago and used it all my career. It never failed. And, as ever you both have turned in an excellent set of memories.

Ahh now this is amongst the best of the videos I’ve seen. Several good good portraits taken spontaneously there. Engaging the subject and making a frame effortlessly. This whole video just felt like a feel good moment. Does Sarah zone focus and compose with the external view finder ? I hope you guys keep making content. I feel when Sarah engaged in conversation with people it really conveyed to the viewer the subjects frame of mind and the ensuing image was a capper.

Thank you. Sarah tends to focus when she can but when she’s on the move she will use zone focusing. She always uses the external finder to compose the shot.

Thank you. I think it’s more down to personality than gender. But, having said this, in our experience of running workshops, female photographers tend to have more confidence around people.

We don't have that information available to us with the cameras we use. Generally speaking, ISO will be between 160-320. Aperture mainly around f5.6 - f8.

Hi both, when I’m out and about in London and other cites I see lots of great opportunities for images where there are youngsters playing or dressed in fancy dress but I never take a shot because of fear of being accused of something I’m not , have you ever had any angry parent confront you about taking their kids pics without asking, unfortunately it’s a sad world we live in today and candid street images which include youngsters having fun are becoming less seen due to many factors these days , the few images I do have on my Instagram have been taken once I’ve asked permission which can obviously lose that unaware impact.

Hi John. I guess the first thing is to realise that whatever others think, you aren’t doing anything wrong. The law is on your side, and ethically people have been photographing kids on streets for a 100 years. As long as you don’t harass or cause stress to the subject, there isn’t any issue. For us, we have two different approaches. I prefer to avoid confrontation and take photos in such a way as to not draw attention to myself. Sarah’s way of working is much more open. She doesn’t hide what she does and is always honest with people if asked. She’s always happy to give her business card. This shows she’s a professional and has nothing to hide or is doing anything underhand. At the end of the day, how comfortable you are shooting kids or any other subject matter will determine your behaviour and body language. Most times the problem lies within the photographer’s head rather than the subject. I agree with you regarding the current state of the world. Would Cartier-Bresson’s famous ‘Rue Mouffetard, Paris’ ever been taken if he had stopped and asked permission? Jeff

I had a similar question about using people's photos in general in photo books or zines.. I see many street photo zines and I always thought you need permission for commercial purposes but there is no way anyone could ask hundreds of people in public for permission!
