PRESIDENT KAGAME MEETS POPE FRANCIS

Rwanda's President Paul Kagame on Monday 20th March 2017 held talks with the Holy Father, Pope Francis, at the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City. President Kagame and the Holy Father discussed several aspects of the relationship between Rwanda and the Holy See. The President commended the Church’s contributions to Rwanda’s socio-economic development, particularly in the education and health sectors. Also discussed was the Church’s role in the most tragic chapters of Rwanda’s past, leading up to the Genocide against the Tutsi in 1994.

This was overdue but as a Catholic I am very glad the Pope has apologized. It is bazaar to me that Catholic priests colluded in the killings. I cannot understand that. This year is the centenary of the Fatima apparition. I think Pope Francis should also consecrate Russia to Our Lady, that should have been done decades ago.

Some of the murderous priests never made a mystery of their bloodlust. For example a Belgian priest named Aelvoet gave an interview to a Belgian newspaper on 4/16/94, at the height of the genocide, to recount his joy while in Rwanda, because he got to spend his time “burying Tutsis”! He told the paper that when he had to organize a Requiem (funeral mass), he felt more like singing the Te Deum out of joy, and he always looked forward for more. His racial hatred seemed shockingly pathological but he was allowed to carry on as an ordained priest, officiating in the name of the Vatican.

Like I say, the whole thing is very strange to me. A "priest" behaving like that is like an elephant growing wings and flying. I accept what you say did happen but that man was not a priest as I understand a priest to be. Priests are kind and holy. In my country, Priests worked, disguised as labourers and mass was held in secret places because the British would have slaughtered everyone who attended.

Yes, and unfortunately Aelvoet’s was nothing like an isolated case in Rwanda. A Bishop who was interviewed just last week about this horrible phenomenon concluded his remarks the same way you just did when you say “that man was not a priest as I understand a priest to be.” The Bishop was talking about yet another such priest by the name of Bourcret: “I knew him as my colleague but we lived in different monasteries” says Mgr. Rudahunga. “There are times when I think Fr. Bourcret Joseph could be a Belgian spy in the name of priesthood. I mean, how a priest could become that heartless!” So it’s true that priests are normally good but the Catholic Church in Rwanda had been deeply corrupted from the top down in historical proportions starting in the 1950s. To a point where it was routine to find priests baying for blood. Nonetheless what you mention about British policy in Ireland is appalling, especially from a nation that fancies itself a beacon of “rights and democracy”, and the standard that everyone MUST look up to! But then again Belgium would have claimed the same mantle even as it was presiding over genocide in its colonies. I guess my point is that there exist startling historical facts out there that are so disturbing and so suppressed that our minds sometimes refuse to even acknowledge them.
