Thanks African Traveller for this video, which takes me down memory lane to my schooling days at Thogoto Junior School: Walking to Kikuyu Station to catch a train to Naivasha for a school picnic at the lake; Chrismas Carols at the Watson/Scott Chapel to Sunday Church at the Church of Torch and later to AGHS. Thogoto a corruption of "Scotland" by the Kikuyu people, started out as a mission that was established by the Scottish Presbyterian Mission! There is so much history in this place!

Thanks for taking me back to the 80s. It brings back some great memories. This was my home away from home for 4 years. I attended the first African girls' high school located in Kikuyu. All the area schools used to gather for an annual thanksgiving service at Church of the Torch. I went to Kikuyu hospital several times for my eye check up. On the weekends we would walk to town especially to buy hot bread from Levillas bakery. The town has really grown.

I wish the colonialists had not given missionaries specific regions to minister in. Today I can sometimes tell your tribe based on your church. PCEA=Kikuyu, AIC= Kalenjin/Kamba, SDA=Kisii etc. That's why some politicians use church congregations to set up their political bases due to this affiliations.

Nice work, once again! Everywhere in Kenyan urban settlements we see strong evidence of very poor, inept or nonexistent aesthetic town planning! Wish they would do more to plan for the future and create beautiful urban places where people can feel good to live. An haphazard strewing of structures is not sound town planning. Investors can never be persuaded to come to chaotic places. That is why orderly, well planned cities that focus on nature, always outsmart their competitors.

WIPED OUT! Swahili City States thrived along the coast from Mogadishu to Madagascar based on global trade with Arabia, India and China. Vasco da Gama opened the way for Portuguese conquest after sailing round the cape of Africa in 1497. The Portuguese destroyed and plundered the Swahili City States reducing most of them to ruins such as the Geddi ruins (now a museum in Kenya). However, a few still stand like the medieval "Old Town" Mombasa and Lamu, which are Unesco Historic sites. The Portuguese were eventually driven out by the Sultan of Oman only to be replaced by the British in the 1880s. The Swahili City States were owned by Africans, who also controlled trade with the Africans in the hinterland. However, British Invasion resulted in usurping the best farm land in Kenya for European settlement and marginalization of Africans who became squatters, thus effectively destroying hinterland African trade, culture and history.

Ive been passing that underpass and I didn’t know such a place exists. Next time, pap! Just the same menu. Kikuyu town has improved a lot, with streets and parking paved, new market, houses coming up. The revamped railway 🚃 station which Kikuyu was known for, “Ceceni.” There is a big “controversial” Fig tree 🌲 in the middle of the town which is a blessing and at the same time posing as a “danger.” Cutting it down is an abomination, and letting it stay is a risk. County government had floated a tender of whomever want to cut it, but nobody has dared come forth.
