I've got a peated and sherried single malt whisky from the Kilchoman distillery on Islay today. This is the Sanaig, an affordable expression from the core range. I'll taste it and give you my thoughts. Cheers!

Really love this stuff. So deep and rich in natural colour. It's become my favourite peat/sherry whisky - for me taking the crown from the Ardbeg Uigeadail. Can't wait to try their Loch Gorm.

This doesn't have the complexity or nuance of Uiegeadail, but i prefer the overall character, too. Great easy sipper with lots of personality. If you like this I'm sure you'll love the Gorm!

Hey, I always enjoy your reviews. I’m also a huge fan of the sanaig, and in fact prefer it just a smidge to the Machir bay, which is saying something, as I quite enjoy that. Tonight, I’m actually sipping Pete’s beast batch strength sherry cask. What I’ve found lately is that the expressions I’m enjoying the most are the ones with a moderate sherry influence, not sherry bombs… hence, my beloved ardbeg uigeadail and this very one! I would add the ledaig 18, although that one is considerably more expensive. I think that sherry adds complexity as well as a hint of luxury. anyway, keep on doing what you’re doing, it’s always a pleasure to check you out! Slainte!!!

I mean you're talking to the right guy. I love my sherry. I like a big sherry bomb myself, but I don't want it to overwhelm the distillery character. The Best sherried whiskies are restrained enough to let the unique character of the distillate shine though. The Sanaig is a beauty! Cheers Brian!

Hi Jeff I have watched your reviews on kilchoman sanaig, and our only difference is I find the peated whiskeys all different is the sanaig is a lot better than the ardbeg, and the laguvulan whiskeys, this is my favorite whiskey of the peated whiskeys, I loved this one very much over the for mentioned whiskeys, I just found the kilchoman sanaig the best of any peated whiskeys, I'm glad you turned me on to this brand of whiskey, and I will always have this on my bar, thanks for the review and I will give this whiskey a 92 points, cheers sir !!!

Nice review, thanks! The Bourbon/Sherry graph on the bottle always confuses me. Is it more sherry cause it's a bigger bar or more bourbon cause it's closer to the word. The Machir Bay gift set was one of my first single malts. Wow! And I kept going from there. I think I am past entry level sippers but this is tempting because the local shop has some dark ones in stock. They had at least 5 expressions lately, so aside from the Machir Bay CS I got a 9 year old bourbon cask....might be the finest bottle I have. ....the quest goes on!
@Gwhisky
@Gwhisky 3 жыл бұрын
I believe the graph is meant to show that the profile is more sherry than bourbon influenced. I haven't had the Machir Bay CS, but ive had some single vask bourbon expressions that I've really enjoyed. I'd recommend this as well as the latest Loch Gorms if you want to try something with a sherried edge. Cheers!

what you say at 6:50 resonates with my experience, having had this last weekend. This is the first whisky since Laphroaig and Ballechin that made me think ''I'm getting another bottle'' I tend to do some research and manage to land on some whiskys that I totally adore, and this is one of my new favorites. My first love in whisky was Laphroaig 10 and Ballechin 10 in 2016, having recently turned 18. Ardbeg 5 and 10, Bunnahabhain, Caol Ila 12, Scarabus 10, were all whiskys that I liked A LOT, but nothing quite like Laphroaig and Ballechin. Sanaig reminded me of Ballechin in its peatiness that is both in your face yet quite mild, capital P Present but not overpowering. I was blown away by this, liked it even more than the Machir Bay Cask Strenght I also got last weekend, which was a bit too tame and may suffer a little bit from being young and a bit uninteresting. I know how crazy that is, a cask strenght Islay being experienced as ''not quite as ridiculous an experience I am looking for in whisky''. After the first nose and tasting, a lot of the interesting flavours of peat, smoke, the maritime and rockfruit notes, dissipate and it tastes more of barley and caramel/sugary sweetness, and really has a classic whisky taste I find in most other whiskys (I'm not sure what it is, if it comes from the barrel or the barley, but the sort of flavour I get from almost any other whisky, it's almost similar to strong pale beer). The verdict on Machir Bay may sound harsh, it's great, but personally, a good Laphroaig (such as Quarter Cask), Ballechin 10, and Sanaig are right up my street because there's so much peat on the first nose and taste, and then a unique realm of intricate yet distinct flavours interacting. In Sanaig, I understand it seems unbalanced, but I found that these flavours started to dissonantly harmonize, if that makes sense. So I agree while disagreeing with the idea it's unbalanced, where I found the sherry and peat sometimes pulling away or almost getting all over the place, yet then coming back to intertwine and repeat this sort of dance. I swear I'm not trying to sound pretentious. Am looking forward to getting better at understanding what I am looking for and finding a similar whisky that blows it even further out of the park for me, suffering less from what I find a bit boring about Ardbeg, Machir Bay, Scarabus (I know how insane it is to have those names and ''boring'' in the same sentence). Would love suggestions on what I may like. Currently looking towards Lagavulin 8, Port Charlotte, Ledaig, but will definitely buy another Sanaig if I love it as much as I did last weekend the next time I tasted. My reservations about Lagavulin are similar to those I have about Laphroaig: that in order to satisfy rising demand, their production has changed for the worse, e.g. outsourcing where they get barley, applying chill-filtration and adding colour.
@joeypetruska7286
@joeypetruska7286 3 жыл бұрын
I agree that Kilchoman does not have the mainstream recognition it deserves. They are as artisanal as a scotch can get, sourcing ALL of their own barley (amazing feat honestly), and do everything in the production process on site as well, including the bottling! Truly a craft whisky from start to finish. Glad that you reviewed it and rated it so highly because I think Sanaig and Machir Bay deserve to be in the conversation for best “entry level” single malts on the scotch market. I prefer it to even the fantastic Ardbeg Uigeadail which I don’t say lightly as I absolutely adore the Uigeadail, this whisky is just THAT good in my opinion. Also, if you can find the most recent bottling, I think it’s even better now, the color is much darker, they must have sourced some really high quality casks because the sherry influence is much more present and drives the flavor more than the peat at times. Great whisky and review. Cheers!
@Gwhisky
@Gwhisky 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I've heard the newer ones are darker. I can't wait to try one! I prefer Sanaig to Uigeadail too, and I'd agree that it's one of the best entry level Islays. I have a bottle of Oogie on the go too, and if I'm being totally honest, it's not what it used to be.
@joeypetruska7286
@joeypetruska7286 3 жыл бұрын
@@Gwhisky Agree on the Oogie degradation. I kind of think it has to do with how many limited editions they’ve been pumping out lately. Maybe they’re not allocating as much of the older casks into the Oogie and instead to all these limited editions? (Scorch, Blaaack, Drum and the 8 year are all within 2 years I think) Who knows, but agreed, quality not what it used to be, still an above average dram, but my bottle now doesn’t match my first bottle in 2017. The current Sanaig is flat out better and being $15 less (in my market at least) is just icing on the cake!
@FEWGEE1
@FEWGEE1 Жыл бұрын
Oogie has degraded, because the original bottlings consisted of 15 yr old bourbon, and 25 yr old sherry casks. Now it's 8-10 yr old bourbon, and 5-6 yr old sherry casked whiskys.

I've just copped the trial set of 2x200ml bottles of Machir Bay and Sanaig. The Machir Bay was very peat-punchy but the pear/flat peach/citric/vanilla notes are enjoyable. First impression: 84/100 The Sanaig was a lot drier than I'd expected, but there was just enough sherry influence to counterbalance it and the moreishness is definitely there. First impression: 86/100. They're both quite dry and tannic on the finish. Worth the money I've spent without a doubt, but I want to put them in a flight to see how they compare to stuff like Bunnahabhain Cruch Mhona, Lagavulin 8, Ardbeg 10 and the like.

Nice review. Recently had a tasting set from Annandale distillery. They do a smoky and non smoke version of their whisky. Both are really good but they also do both in STR barrels which are fantastic. If you can get them I recommend trying the Man of Words STR and the Man of Swords STR. You can also get a sample of their new mix before it goes in a barrel something I don't remember any other distillery doing. Oh and they are bottled at 61 or 62 abv. Managed to get a bottle of Man of Swords but the Words one seems to go really fast.

Thanks for a good review as always! I picked this up a few days ago and tried i yesterday. The only ones available here are Sanaig and Machir Bay, and those are the same price. I did eyeball Sanaig for a long time, and since I love the peat/cherry combo, I had to pick it up. I also compared it with Longrow Peated and Ardbeg Uigeadail. I must say, even though Uigeadail are one of my favourites so far, the Sanaig didn't fall behind that much at all. It's definitely in my top 10. My first taste of the Longrow didn't really kick me off my chair as I expected, but I will definitely go back to it. I did enjoy it though. One of my top 5 peat/cherry, or even top 3 is Port Askaig 100. Arran Heavily Peated Sherry Casks is up there too. 😋 Machir Bay will remain on my list for future tastings.

I just picked up my first bottle of Sanaig a month or so ago, on recommendation from a local shop owner when I went in looking for Lagavulin 16 (which there is apparently a shortage of). Don't think it really bears much resemblance to the Lag 16, though the chocolate notes do remind me of the Lagavulin Offerman Edition Guinness Cask Finish. Overall, it reminds me of Uigeadail, but with a distinct chocolate note in the mix. Considering the state minimum price here is $15 less than Uigeadail, it's kind of hard to beat.

I'd agree its very different from the Laga. The Laga has the age and refinement, but Sanaig is cheaper, more intense, and naturally presented. Never had the Offerman Laga so I can't compare. 🥃

My local shop in the UK won't order it because they have to order a minimum of SIX bottles. I've had to resort to Amazon, and the bottle should arrive tomorrow 10th July 2024. IF I like this one enough, I'll tell my local shop, sod it, order SIX, I'll buy four and you can put the last two on the shelves, win/win! I have seven other Kilchoman bottles in their range, and, there is method in my madness, once the bottles are empty (sadly) I shall turn them into lamp stands. The bottles are good and sturdy and would suit a lamp and shade, label kept on naturally. I'm hoping this Kilchoman isn't too peaty. The last peat monster I drank was the Laphroaig, I likened it to drinking liquid smoked kippers. Having a dram of Laphroaig with a kipper for breakfast kind of appeals. Here's mud in yer eye!

Got this a few weeks ago and I like it. RE: balance - I found my bottling was really smoke dominated for the first few pours. It was all I really got from it flavour-wise... reminded me of a "hot"/sharp Bowmore. But when I got past the shoulder of the bottle the whisky had had time to oxidise a little and then the other flavours and the sherry influence became much clearer. It's very interesting with a lot going on, and it gets better and better the longer I leave it to breathe. Problem is I've been spoiled by PC10 which is magic from the off. I'm glad I tried the Sanaig, but I don't know that I'll be chasing further bottles when I think there are other peated malts out there more to my taste. It is good value for the flavour profile though. Would recommend to anyone who likes smoky whisky. But when I got past the shoulder of the bottle the whisky had had time to oxidise a little and then

Great review! I'm adding the Sanaig to my wishlist, especially since it costs less than an Ardbeg 10 here. Sherry and peat is a great combination when done well. Just seems to be very challenging to actually pull off. So far the 2 scotches I've tried that have done this best with a bolder peated profile have been Ardbeg Uigeadail and Lagavulin DE. Tried Laphroaig Lore and PX but found both pretty disappointing despite being a Laphroaig fan in general. Any chance you'll be reviewing some Japanese or Indian whiskies in the near future?

It's grown on me. I'm struggling to typify what kind of peating it has. It does not have that 'tire fire on the beach' peating, nor the 'wet band-aid' peating, of the likes of Laphroaig or Ardbeg. It does have a faint whiff of the lapsang tsuchong (aka 'creosote') in the peat aroma (like Lag16). The peating is similar, but not quite the same, as that of Port Charlotte 10, but with that lapsang tsuchong element. Yes, the distillate is excellent and the marriage of sherry very deft. It stands shoulder to shoulder in my cabinet with PC10 and gets offered to my peat-curious friends with glowing recommendations. (When I bought it, I considered it to be the 'Momma Bear' of the three offerings. I hoped it would be 'juuuuust riiiiight.' I was surprised that it was, and it continues to be.)

I just got a Ledaig 10 but I have an itch to get this one too. How would you say they compare in overall quality? I know the Sanaig is going to be good, just wondering if after the Ledaig 10 this would be a step up or a step down (being NAS and all). cheers!

I prefer this to the Ledaig 10. Both excellent, but the sherried touch gives it more complexity. I'm also a huge fan of the farmy quality we get with Kilchoman. Be warned, though, that there's a good amount of batch variation among Sanaigs. Had some good ones and some not-great ones. Meanwhile the Ledaig 10 is much more consistent. 🥃

@@Gwhisky the Sanaig will have to wait. Found a Mother’s Day deal and just ordered a Tamdhu 15 :). May is wrapped up as far as new bottles.

Kilchoman Sanaig has a darker color and that sweeter Sherry flavor than Machir Bay which is weighted 75/25 bourbon. At 46 AVP it has a nice kick. The peat is noticed but not overpowering. It is Islay true and true. This is an exceptional peated scotch that is a "look forward to" whiskey. You will not be disappointed with this fine flavor.

I can’t bring myself to like Kilchoman. It tastes too young and too yesterday ashtray-like to me. In my area a bottle of NAS Kilchoman costs more than a 10 year old Glencadam or 12 year old Glenallachie! If Kilchoman released a 10 or 12 year old bottling for the same price they charge now for Sanaig or Machir Bay I would give it a try. The distillery is old enough to release decent age statement or equivalent vintage whisky. They have a blurb on the website about how keeping it NAS allows their master blender more freedom do come up with fine expressions. Frankly, it sounds disingenuous.

Yeah it's definitely an ashy house style that's not going to be for everyone. They're overdue for some age-stated stuff. Really hoping they give us an age-stated line in the near future. There's a general trend, particularly among craft whisky distilleries, to focus less on age statements. I'd rather have the age, even if it's young. Cheers! 🥃
