I’ve also never heard of this writer, but this was brilliant, thank you! I love these kind of tragic figures- you can’t tell whether they need a good hug or a stern talking to. I wonder how he would feel knowing that a video would be made about him some time in the future.

He definitely needed a stern talking to, but he only ever seemed to talk sternly to others haha. I think, if he saw this, he would think I was making a joke of him. He was the guest of honor at a major event one time, and he almost didn't go, because he believed it was set up to mock him. Poor guy, hahah

Steller, I don't think Pae's going to mention the most important part. What about Trout's son, Leon Trotsky Trout, the well-known conscientious objector to the Vietnam War? And did he, or did he not, have a daughter named Jenny Trout? As far as I know, Leon certainly never mentioned a sister. I watched this video twice and now I really want to read more about the robot with bad breath.

AHHH! I knew I should have added more from Galapagos, but wasn't sure where to fit it in haha. But yes! There is a Jenny Trout (based off folksinger Leslie Fish). That is actually really cool you know that. Though I now know how extensive your reading history has been, it is still refreshing to hear people know the "lesser" known works of a good author. Great one. I read in some other comments that Vonnegut didn’t appreciate Sturgeon using Kilgore Trout to publish “Venus”. Do you happen to know why? (btw, I’ve just started Cat’s Cradle).
@attention56383 жыл бұрын
Venus on a Half Shell was published by a man named Philip Jose Farmer, but it would have made way more sense for Sturgeon to write Trout novels. 😂 I am not sure why Vonnegut didn't like Farmer doing it, as I believe he was given permission to do so. I tried looking it up, but all I could find was Vonnegut did appreciate it. Haha. And yes! Cat's Cradle seems to be everyone's favorite, but as I am rereading these novels, there are some themes I dont remember. It has been years since I read Cat's Cradle, so I am now wondering how I would read it now.

Do you plan on reviewing "Venus on the Half Shell" in the near future? That's the only Trout novel that I'm aware of that escaped any of Vonnegut's novels. His other stories ("2BR02B" and "Thanatosphere") were short stories that Vonnegut eventually wrote himself.
@attention56383 жыл бұрын
I thought of doing on on "Venus on a Half Shelf" and was actually going to do that instead of this video, but upon reading that Vonnegut himself disapproved (even though, originally approved) the novel, I decided against it. I didn't want to upset any Vonnegut fans 😅

Oh! I can answer that! There is a few reasons! One, he used Trout as an outlet for a lot of his ideas that he never developed, but wanted to get out. Throught his work, Trought shows up giving quick synopsis of his work. And another reason, Vonnegut had a need to write science fiction, but moved away from the genre because of how it was viewed by the critics. So he found a way to continue to write novels with sci fi elements without the work being considered science fiction. Trout is kind of Vonneguts "sci fi side" that is just here and there in his novels. 😊
