I have no words to express how this song touched me. I am from the Czech Republic, poor people from this country also went to America, several cousins of my grandmother with their entire families. Their parents stayed behind and never saw their children again. The letters are full of their love, and Byran Hunt's great-great-grandson Peter Jones composed them into this beautiful Irish ballad. Touching. And I am not ashamed of my tears...

teacher played this in an English class for us like a decade ago now, and I remember it being this exact video. hell, i'm prolly the one dude from that class or year who still remembers this track. what a banger, and thank you for keeping it up all these years later.

Literally same! My teacher played this exact video during English class about twelve or thirteen years ago and it is probably my strongest memory from school. Still brings tears to my eyes even to this day.

I heard this over 10 years ago in English class. I had forgotten about it but something - I don't know what - made it pop up in my head again. So I listened again, to the same version that was already on KZbin back then - this one. And here I am again, the same crying mess that I was 10 years ago. The lyrics just pierce right through my heart. Honestly, with my parents now aging, they hit even harder. Thank you for uploading this and for keeping it here. It's an emotional piece of memory.

I was hanging onto every word the first time I heard this years ago. I still have that feeling. I have to stop what I am doing and just listen. Blackthorn nails it! Fantastic version. Thank you for putting it up for us to enjoy.

Thank you for posting this. It has always been my favorite version of the song. As someone who lives 1300 miles from his family, I don't think I can ever listen to it with a dry eye.

i am of irish descent, no different then the great migration of the irish to newfoundland hundreds of years ago. My generation of people have to leave the island of newfoundland to find work. my whole family and the families of all my friends are affected the same way as our ancestors were.

Me people are from a place called Ballure, a wee village between kiltimagh and Kilkelly. Mayo was once the most populated county in Ireland, now it is the least. Tis a sad state of affairs that the people were dependent on a good potatoes harvest. Black '47 was a tough year for the Irish, but especially for the folks in Connaught. (Western Ireland)

This just sounds weird. It's a very great song. It tells a very sad and moving tale. But in this version, they kinda fail to deliver the story, with their tempo and deliverance of the song.

I think the tempo is a bit off as well. Good song eiter way; it takes a lot to make me want to cry, and this song does it. Touches close to home. Makes you angry at the son for not writing back or bothering to visit is father when he as a chance to do so....true all around the world. People shut their parents away somewhere and leave them to die because they're too busy to visit. Although they somehow make time to go to parties and go on vacations and things like that. Just can't be bothered to visit their parents because its not convenient for them. Ah, for the days when people actually felt an obligation to respect and look after their elders. Now we just make nursing homes and set up Social Security so we don't ave to be bothered doing anything ourselves. That's when we aren't actively mocking elderly people for being old and stupid and slow; 'ha ha, you're old and feeble and going to die soon, what a joke!'

Absolutely love the song but nothing beats the o'connell,keane and moloney version. This is just terrible. Where's the emotion in this ? He doesn't even sound sad to say his wife's passed on. No point in singing a song like this if you can't get the message across properly.
@rehorekhonza6761
@rehorekhonza6761 8 жыл бұрын
+MyAll1990 I actually prefer this version than keane, moloney, ect., because i think its more "real" one. I mean, imagine old man whos telling his sons that their mother died, do you thing he would be telling them that in way like o connel does? Times were hard but so were people. It was normal back then to have 4-6 children, because you couldnt know how many of them will survive to their teenage years. I think that emotions are hidden deep inside in lyrics and singer´s voice
