Ok I laughed because this reminded me of my first sergeant who was actually a combat photographer. The Marines in its infinite wisdom made him the Company First sergeant of an infantry unit. When I was leaving the Marines I did an exit interview with my company commander he said to me the marine corp does not have a lot of actually infantry gunnery sergeants to promote because you leave the infantry and the others are broke down physically. He said the purpose of the First Sergeant is not to teach you infantry it's to be an administrator of sorts for all the enlisted marines and to help develop the NCO's, Staff NCO's, and junior officers.

I could not get over the fact that both "grunts" felt secure behind a sheet off plywood with a couple of sandbags lining the top. They had no cover. Just concealment and as soon as the sniper zeroed that position they should have moved to some proper cover with a field of fire that allowed them to engage the enemy.
