What's such a weird and amazing detail of this performance is how never fully closes both his eyes, he does these weird half blinks, as if he trained himself to never fully close his eyes to someone so that he could always see them coming. such a small detail but it also increases the weight of every blink he throws her way. If you really think about it, Esteban Viahio, was the most dangerous of all the characters in Kill Bill: 1.) Extremely flattering to a degree where he disarms you into a false sense of safety. 2.) He looks old sitting in that wheelchair and pretends to be retired but, it's made clear that he's the leader of a ruthless gang. 3.) He was already waiting for Beatrice as he asked what happened to her last vehicle. 4.) He tells her flat out that he would've cut her face if she would've betrayed him, thus showing what he did to the other woman and making fun of her by blowing kisses at her. 5). He is also aware of where Bill lives, down to the address, which means he's extremely well informed. 6.) He's a heartless pimp as he doesn't care about sending her to what he thinks may be her death. ( Just my personal opinion.)

This scene is so interesting and I didn’t really appreciate it when I was younger watching it. As a kid I was bored at this scene wanting to see her clash swords with Bill already. But this scene is very important. It develops Bill’s backstory very well in only 5 minutes. This character is very interesting as well. It’s clear that while both Esteban and Beatrix have a polite demeanor toward each other, they both were prepared to kill each other if necessary. Beatrix probably didn’t expect him to cooperate. She may have needed to kill his subordinates and torture the information out of him like she did with Sofie. In contrast, Esteban knew she was dangerous. The subtle “I would have just cut your face” remark followed by deliberately calling over the whore who had a permanent slit across her lips, no doubt for crossing him in the past, so much that she was constantly drooling - it was a subtle threat, to show what happened to ladies who crossed him and his gang, and that even retired, he still was not to be trifled with. But they were both fortunate. He gave her the information she needed willingly because he loved Bill and knew he’d want to see her again. And so she went on her way with no blood shed. This could easily have been another “house of blue leaves” scene where she ended up fighting an army of Acuna boys. But Tarantino took a different direction with this movie. It’s these little things that make me appreciate this film so much.

A small detail that I love in this scene is how Esteban explains to Beatrix that unlike bill, he wouldn't have killed her, but only scarred her. Shortly afterwards when he calls the girl for a drink, we can see how her face is actually scarred. At that point Beatrix understands that no matter how elegant and polite Esteban is, he remains an animal just like Bill. At that point the bride is clearly enraged by the girl, and probably barely stops herself from making another massacre.Incredible performance by everyone, Una Thurman above all.

What's impressive about Parks's take on the character is he more or less would have created it spur of the moment, due to Ricardo Montalban not being able to make the table read. Parks was on hand, and so Quentin asked him to stand in for Montalban. While we don't know how much of that initial take made it to the screen, it must have been impressive enough that it convinced him pay off Montalban and given the role to Parks.

In the end, Esteban and Bill embody the same evil (no surprise since he had a big influence on Bill)... the sick way they relate to women they adore, the looks, the ruthless labor. I love how her well-mannered, flattered behaviour towards Esteban changes in this scene after she realises that he is as sadistic as Bill, having destroyed the woman's face who undoubtedly is a bit of a look-a-like of Béatrix.

Quentin Tarantino said Uma had been playing the Bride so long that by this scene she WAS the Bride. You can see that here. Completely relaxed into her badass character.

One of the most overlooked aspects of this scene, is how Beatrix absolutely despises the man she is speaking to. It’s clear through her mannerisms yes, but when he requests a drink, you really see the hate she has for him in her eyes.

Tarantino knows how great Parks is. Hence the extreme closeups to capture every nuance.
