@@chefnerdHey, they're entitled to it. I got my little ass ratioed by some people (who clearly only play AAA crap) saying games suck now. I tried to mention modern indy masterpieces like Rimworld and Slay the Spire to them and they weren't having it. In 2024 there are more choices of better games than back in my day...

Already I see people who look at Marvel Rival's 26 dollar skins or non expiring battlepass and go "wow that's great" or feel spoiled about criticizing such prices. Not even kids, adults in their 20s or older, some who have even been well acquainted with the game industry for at least 10+ years, who should know better. I really feel like more people need to watch a video of Halo: Reach's (Non-MCC) customization menu and realize that used to be the standard. Now Halo Infinite charges you for colours. The excuse people and corporations would use to justify pricing is that such games are "free-to-play". But the only reason why these games are free to play in the first place is that companies think they can make more money that way. Last I checked, the top 100 most grossing mobile games are all free-to-play, and companies took notice. This might be an important point to stress to people who recite these excuses. Free-to-play isn't charity, nor is it a trade off for companies, because they think they will be more profitable this way.

@@chefnerd The thing is, if you're youth was around the late 90s, early 2000s period, that's actually arguably true. That was around the time period when new technology, and greater memory space allowed for devs to be more expressive with their story telling, environment design, and the like. In the time since then though, higher budgets, bigger teams, greater graphical fidelity ceilings, and other corporate meddling increased the time it took to make games while reducing the input and freedom of the creatives behind them. A common "compliment" given to games now-a-days by people who know little about the games industry is "When the devs actually care". I'm certain that the cause behind that statement's rising popularity is not because of any truth behind it, but because the impact a single developer's passion can have on a game is decreasing, and their care bears less and less fruit for the consumer. ^Indie games excluded because I'm mostly talking about games coming from bigger publishers.

I've never understood how those license agreements can hold any legal weight when they are always presented to you *after* you've already purchased the game. How is the gaming industry allowed to just retroactively force a legal contract on you on pain of confiscation of the product long after the sale was completed???

i mean some of us purposely jumped off. the only "AAA" game i regularly still play is Civ 4 and the odd round of TFT on the league client, which is free to play. The rest are indie, rimworld and slay the princess and considering picking up deltarune again or the new stardew valley update or maybe another queer romance game, maybe replay butterfly soup.

This was never normal, but "slow boil" is an apt descriptor. We're, quite literally, cooked. Our only option is to hop out of the pot - and the game's poor sales are kind of a comforting factoid. Hearing that Kill the Justice League underperformed means that some of us still have working grey matter.

At this point, I'm ready to believe that the amount of A's assigned to a given game aren't a statement of their quality and production values but of how generic the experience is going to be. Ubisoft calling 'Skulls and Bones' a quadruple-A game wasn't a show-off, but a warning.

This is honestly like watching Captain America waking up from being frozen and writing down all the things he hears being referenced in order to investigate later. Seeing you tackle more of modern gaming's doldrums would be absolutely cathartic in the most subdued, relaxed, and sardonic manner that only you could provide. Also if you're looking for other potential, more worthwhile modern games to occupy your time with, I HIGHLY recommend Neva, Worldless, and Anno Mutationem. I think you may get a lot out of them either storywise or gameplaywise.

If you go back and play all the old remastered triple a games youll have a good time too. As someone who is in deep with the CoD multiplayer brain infestation but only started playing it for the first time last year when I bought a PS4 as my first gaming system since the Wii (and the OG PlayStation prior to that), this was a familiar watch. When I first started playing I thought to myself “why are they called loadouts and operators instead of inventory and characters” and then at some point it just became normal. I have fun playing, it’s fast-paced and mindless and I’m in a stage of life where I really need that. Plus it’s great to get to play with friends. If only it would stop bloody lagging all the damn time. At least on CoD’s menu screen, the store is all the way over to the right. Although that does mean that if you want to scroll the quick way to your “barracks” to “prestige” you have to click past it. I’ve been watching you since the CA days, and I am thoroughly enjoying your new style of videos. I hope that you’re having as much fun making them as I am watching them.

I mean what's the worse that can happen? One of these types of games becomes successful... So for no real reason that makes any sense: An entire industry for multiple years is forced to churn-out these types of games at an absurd rate that over-saturates the market with a genre that is so painfully manipulative in it's presentation that anyone who experiences a game like this will never touch another-one, which completely defeats the purpose of the multiple games in this genre being released and that the reliance on battlepasses and extra content, which is already screwed to begin with because the publisher doesn't understand that development teams then need to be continually creating content and not disbanding which is a complete 180 of how they've run stuff since the beginning of time so your budgets that are already insane to begin with now become some gigantic "too big to fail" ship that can't course correct when everyone tells you they don't want to play these games anymore. That's insane. Like you would have to be completely insane to do that.

there are menus like this in Madden nowadays. I only tried to play it like once, but the comparison to sports is apropos. I think there's a pretty heavy divide between gamers that just play sports games and those who play everything else, so it makes sense that a game that can be played in sessions like a sports game would want to draw in some of that audience. It works in that these microtransactional games DO tend to win over sports videogamers more than like Crypt of the Necrodancer would. To be clear, the fact sports games are like that is a tragedy and shouldn't be emulated by anyone. A vacuum salesman knocking on your door every day isn't just annoying, it's pathetic. these games should have more dignity than to cry poverty every time they throw a store in your face.

The most interesting review about this game I've seen so far! You offer a unique insight as a, idk, gaming hermit recently emerged from his cave 😂. I've seen so many reviewers too busy ranting about the "continuity of the arkham series" or waxing philosophic about "the tragic state of modern gaming" that they haven't precisely articulated their grievances like you did here, i.e., using celeste (nice) to demonstrate that the jumps in the game lack a sense of physical gravity, instead of just saying "travel feels boring" or pointing out the characters are introduced like action figures and that's why their deaths "feel hollow". I never even realized just how predatory the UI is--forcing you to travel between all the shop screens just to QUIT the game 😡, as well as the obnoxious use sports terminologies--it just adds more to the corporate-y cynicism of it all. "I feel like I'm in a pachinko machine" is sooo right 😆. Thank you for making this review! And I'm sorry for any sanity (or sandwich) loss you have incurred for playing this game :

Leon, I was born in 79 and had a couple brief marriages that took me away from games while I tried hard to buy into the capitalist grind, but here I am single, reading Marx, and enjoying games again as well. My wake up to the current state of gaming and its horrors wasn't anything DC Comics related thankfully, but it was the initial release of Cyberpunk which was infinitely more disappointing because I really thought I would be purchasing a playable game set in one of my favorite genres, but instead I got an unplayable waste of $60. I learned my lesson though and my most played games of the last few years since I started back are Vampire Survivors, Peglin, Hades and Hades 2, Darkest Dungeon, and Disco Elysium. Must play games every one of them. I know one thing I won't be playing even if it was 3 cents, Kill the Justice League. my sister had been wanting to be back into games for a while after a long gap so her husband bought them a steam deck and asked me for a list of her old faves that would be on steam. we then discovered you have to log in to a third party online connection to play the steam versions of the ps1 final fantasys and like genuinely, what the actual fuck

Pardon, but can anyone tell me what the game shown on-screen around 4:50 is called? It looks like Disco Elysium.

Its just so annoying that you need a totally seperate account in basically every game, sometimes even offline games have these annoying shareholder concessions in them.

I abandoned AAA gaming years ago, when I accidentally lost access to several of those stupid accounts. ... turned out to be a good thing. Now I just stick to retro and indie games. Gaming is going through a second golden age if you ignore all the mainstream crap. NES, SNES, PS1, Saturn, and N64 inspired games. It's freaking great. Seriously. I been playing PS2 and OG Xbox a lot lately, and gaming was so much better 20 years ago. Now everything is all separate accounts you can permanently lose access to, and always online DRM, and rehashing the same restrictive, mediocre gameplay year after year, in these shiny games with no replay value.

I had a similar arc. Games were tapering off around 2004-2005. Wow being the last game I played regularly. From 2006-2010. Didn’t play anything aside from the occasional soul calibur or Tekken with friends. From 2011-2016, played a couple games here and there. Skyrim, TLOU and some GTA5. Played those on other consoles. PS4 pro was the first console I bought since the GameCube. Originally got it for FF15 but Witcher 3 is what really got me back in. Now I play several games a year. Oscillate between playing nothing for weeks to playing something everyday. Depends on how busy I am and what’s out. 😊

Nothing more anti-climatic than sitting down to enjoy a nice long gaming session with your brand new game and having to spend the first hour waiting for it to download, the second our for the updates to download, and the third hour navigating all the third-party permissions before you even hit the title sequence.

I always quit a game with F4. I don't have time to search for an exit option. This is also why I'm banned in Dark Souls III, since if you rage quit after dying the game thinks you're cheating.

Definitely don’t let anyone tell you this is an instance of “old man yells at cloud.” I have never stopped playing AAA games, am a bit younger than you, and I still find this infuriating. A significant portion of it is also not *universal* to AAA titles. It’s just quite common. The only game series that has all of these trappings I play is Call of Duty, which I primarily do for socializing with a friend group that’s into it, and I am newly infuriated by the hostile UI and microtransactions every time.

Yeah, the AAA industry is not too healthy right now. The only recent AAA games I can recommend without reservations are The Legend Of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon.

Kill the Justice League aaaaaalmost lured me in, despite my aversion to live-service, battle-pass-laden, microtrasaction-stuffed slop. So glad I passed and avoided wasting any of my time. I think I'm also gonna go play Ruiner. It's been sitting in my Steam library for ages, never got around to it.
