Life can be hard, but sometimes we bring hardship on ourselves through our own decisions. This one is especially important for youngsters that haven't yet made any big life decisions that they can't back out of. But even if you're older with bigger commitments, it's always possible to reduce your stressors with time and planning.

Just wanted to pop in & tell you, I was wrong. ADHD is in fact a real disorder. I used to come in here a few years back & spout that it was invented by the pharmaceutical industry to push pills. Turns out I'd been living with my partner of 7 years who has just been diagnosed with it.

I’m 42 and child free by choice. My entire adult life I’ve been asked by friends, family, co-workers, *people I don’t even know* why I’m not a parent and told that I will end up regretting it. Like you point out in this video, we’re all different and we need to respect each other’s choices and ways of life.

I think the real problem with the ADHDers who get into a complex life is remaining Undiagnosed. I am sure I have it since childhood but got diagnosed only in my late thirties. Meanwhile, out of ignorance, I had complicated my life, trying to fit in the society and fulfil other’s expectations.

Thank you so much for being brave enough to say this stuff. I’m 39 and I’m finally getting to the point where I’m ok with having an “alternative lifestyle”. I’ve always joked about being a lone wolf. I could be wrong, but it feels harder as a woman to be a lone wolf. Maybe not? But im definitely alone in being single and childless by choice. Maybe you can have an episode on that?

Tonight I just discovered your channel. I am almost 45 and now realising that I probably gave inattentive ADHD. Although I have not had a formal diagnosis almost every story and experience l listen to (including yourself) sounds like I am hearing my own life story. Like you I find solace in being close to nature, leading a simple life..... probably from a young age I realised I wasn't like other people. I haven't led a conventional life...and with the hindsight of middle age I am now grateful if this fact. Many of my ADHD demons continue to be a problem...but watching your videos are helping me find a way through it

Totally agree, I'm a 35 year old woman, I'm diagnosed CPTSD and ADD. Both of my parents were appalling parents. I am reparenting my inner-child and that's enough children for me! I am focusing on regulating my nervous system and healing....I wouldn't want to raise a child while I'm healing. I am proud of being a cycle breaker! 😌

Wow I've been thinking these same kinds of thoughts for decades! Maybe historical hermits had ADHD! Too late for me though, I already have 2 kids and I can confirm that (although they are absolutely lovely) they are a major risk factor for exacerbating ADHD stress and burnout. In fact I think it was my second child that prompted me into seeking ADHD diagnosis because my life became almost unmanageable. So yes, do think carefully about having children and don't take silly risks that might end up in unplanned pregnancies!! And if you do, make sure you have a good support network, unlike me, to help with raising those sprogs!

I came to this realisation around a month ago. I'm a postman and I started off always on the same round (despite it being a bad one) I didn't mind because there was no stress, just go in, work and go home. I come back from surgery and someone signed for it while I was off and now I'm suppose to be day off cover and going on tons of different rounds I've never done. I'm sure you understand for an ADHDer this is incredibly difficult and stressful to the point if I can't find another round i'll have to leave the job. Shame because I thought I had it all sorted but hey ho. As you may have noticed I've been going through your videos and finding them very helpful. Just wanted to thank you for going through the effort of making them. all the best lad

I have had this sort of stuff in teaching. I do supply work no I am retired I don't do jobs that I know are going to be high stress. Don't quit the job your employer has an obligation under the disabilities act to make accommodations for you. We put up with ever escalation levels of stress that we tolerate. Do you think the French would put up with it. Join a trade union and organise a meeting with your manager. Personally I don't mind change so long as I initiated it. I function really well as a physics teacher by not taking on responsibilities and having a subject that is in big demand.

Stuart I agree with you, especially having been a loner and a rebel all my life, and proud and happy to say so. But it's also a big dilemma because human connection is probably the number one priority for good mental and physical health. In a currently insane world where the capacity for reason has gone for most people, it's a difficult balancing act. But simpler, with less baggage is definitely better for us.

This is an older video but I finally found a doctor who took my ADHD etc. seriously and I found your videos while looking for more information.. My life has been a mess for most of it and I have felt depression/anxiety and pressured because I have not attained what "everyone else" has at my age (just turned 47). I prefer a quiet life now and wish I could afford to only work a few days a week and spend the rest doing what I want, away from people and their issues. It's not that I don't care about others but I've had enough of my own problems in life and just do not want to get involved anymore. I do not want to have to explain myself anymore or relive my stories in order to be accepted somehow by others. I enjoy being alone, enjoy not having kids to complicate things. I do like kids but I never found a decent man and eventually relialized how hard parenting would have been for me as I have very little family support nor the means to really raise a chid the way I would have wanted. I am much better without the extra difficulties. It's just me and the cats for now...hopefully will add a few dogs some day. I can deal with animals- they are drama free and lots of love... as long as you can provide the care... I don't mind that responsibility. A relationship would be nice but most of my experiences have been negative and it's just less drama and pain to be on your own. I too have people who think I'm weird and try to get me to be more social and do not understand why I am this way- that their must be something wrong with me. I did have an abusive crazy family so it started with me finally giving up on them, disconnecting and letting go of people who really didn't care about me. I had to learn some hard lessons but I am grateful that I did what I needed to do and I am grateful for the ones that hurt me and set me aside-including my family- it turns out it was for the best. Thank you for posting this and reminding me that it's ok to take a different path and keep things quiet and simple.

Honestly, i think we've got this simple life mentality by participating less with trying to associate with everyone and every norm, that makes us understand how stupid most of it is and has taught us to live our lives how we like to. I love the way you explain how you feel and how you have decided to cope with such tendencies in order to create for yourself a more peaceful life. I feel I have been going at this "thing" all wrong. I have been sorta beating myself up because I dont fit in,, and its like a square peg in round hole dilemna. But thanks to you I feel that it ok,, not to feel like I have to "fit in" that its ok,, and that I am different. I dont have to blend with society's demands, of shoulds , have tos and musts. Its a breath of fresh air. Thanks to you. I am finally seeing things differently.

Really great video, I completely agree. After I became more conscious, I noticed that people usually want luxury items (e.g. $400 Gucci shirts that just say “Gucci” on them) and over-consume as a result of programming, whilst using it as a form of escapism. A lot of people these days don’t allow themselves to face their shadow, they just tuck it away in a box and chase things that will leave them feeling even emptier in the long run. It’s a ruthless cycle

You speak my mind, 100% accurate and same. I have been thinking about same for so long and finally I'm settle enough to take some risk. I left my job where i used to make $95k/year and so happy already. Today was my 1st day being unemployed and enjoying it so much. I'm not planning to live isolated like you do because i am married and got a kid so cant undo things but looking to do something small, to make enough for my family and live peaceful life including pay less taxes lol. I would rather do Uber or something small to make enough for food while keeping my budget lower than working in high stressful job where i lived in anxiety all day long. I used to be stressed when i got projects going on and stressed when there are no projects because you want to show you're busy, so either way it was bad and hated the mindset of being slave. This was like watching myself talking about my life! I'm 44, and stuck in a city i've been meaning to leave for i don't know how long (i've never been a city guy but i moved here after a shitty past with lots of loss), but i'm scared to leave because i fear i'll be alone for the rest of my life... but i never had a relationship, dating is... hard ( sigh 🙄) and i've never felt more lonely than i do right now. So i usually think... what's the effing point of staying here (and yet, here i am, stuck). I've always been there for everyone else, did volunteerwork (all my life), but now that i need help... it's not there, i guess this sounds true for a lot of people in this situation. And i agree, i'm not a big people person, and yet again, i do like to be there for people and help out the less fortunate... this constant conflict in my head is making me nuts

I'm 32 now, and I don't want to get married or have kids. Sometimes I do feel like getting married and having kids, but that's just because of the way society is. The grass always looks green on the other side. I don't think that's really me, though. And as you said, married life and being a parent are hell for people with ADHD. I can't take care of myself well - how will I take care of my wife and kids? I want to become a polymath (extremely hard for someone with AD(H)D) and help people and animals as much as possible (in every possible way). The only problem is that I need bros to enjoy life because I tend to get depressed if I'm alone with myself for too long (thanks to all the negative thoughts that enter without knocking). And at this age, most guys are already married and have kids, so it is miserably difficult to find mates you can spend time with or even talk to.

I want to make a critical comment. On one side I agree with what you say about a minimalist way of life. Consumption, Career and so on is not necessary for "a good life", and it's likely that it's actually using up more ressources too. We are too often entangling ourselves into bullshit, so many social and cultural narratives that create expectations, disappointments, just generally drama. And we do not need it! I agree with it. Maybe you find the buddhist concept of emptiness interesting. On the other side I want to warn of something. We can not push this "minimalist narrative" onto other people either. It's like an offer, you can tell people of your way of life, your personal benefits etc. Just show them the possibility of it. And they can decide to do whatever they want to (within the ethical framework, that they must not hurt others) But...: There's a group of people who struggle to get by. Who live paycheck to paycheck. It's the people who struggle to manage the basic "going by". The resulting stress is not something you can simply "get over". And we should be wary of the minimalist narrative in this context. If the stress is about some career, it's not necessary per se. If it's about the next meal, oh boy that's a stressful situation I assume. So: I am grateful that I don't face this situation, I'm privileged enough that money to get by is not an issue. Just wanted to give my 2ct. Nice video!

So glad I’ve found your page over the past few days think I’ve watched nearly all of your videos , so insightful ! Over the years at the Doctor had depression , possibly BDP traits , I have never even thought of ADHD or more ADD , my RSD gets thru the roof sometimes and noone understands or gets it ! I’m the black sheep too lol , no kids , lived myself for 17 years and left the sales rat race sales 4 years ago now self employed a more simple life is much easier in my head and can work when I want ! Your videos have been so many light bulbs , I’m going to attempt the doctor one more time for an ADHD diagnosis or maybe just need to pay for private therapy to try to get to the bottom of some heavy stuff ! Low bull shit ha ha ha it’s a BS pandemic out there just now ! Stay Hard as Goggins would say 😉

Awesome video once again. I realized I overcommited to a very positive but something that doesn't align with my goals, personality and adhd. I think I'm actually clear that I need to start the steps to free myself from that, before it brings more negative consequences.

It's so hard to have kids if you have ADHD. I didn't know I had ADHD until I had kids and realized that I can't properly care for them. Like keeping track of their things and appointments and dressing them, doing their laundry. It's so hard. They taught me to be a better person though and its fun getting to be a kid again with them. If you like toys and cartoons and stuff like that, having a kid is fun lol. I enjoy reading to them and teaching them about the world too. I will be so sad when they are grown. SO that's something you don't have to worry about either.

Noswaith dda. This sounds a little bit sad, not having a child, but I understand your point of view. Still I hope you will change your mind eventually. My first child was born when I was 34 second 3 years later and for me this is the best part of my life. I have been diagnosed with ADHD 2 months ago and now when I am looking back at my past, raising my children was probably the thing where I was at my best.

Unfortunately in the USA, your healthcare is tied with your employer. Quit your job, lose your health coverage. So good luck quitting your high-stress job. Also, with ADHD, I got so bored at my “easy” low-stress jobs. There was not enough pay and not enough to challenge my mind.

I thought about this mate, nothing bad with the simple life from time to time. But as you always say yourself in the videos, its hard to keep up with the modern life - meaning we WANT to be a part of society -> giving in means almost giving up, u know? I know those are hard words and maybe its just me expecting more from myself, but yeah.. thats how I feel about this. Iam 34male myself, feel you. Also the lone wolf analogie

What I meant is that many people choose to have highly stressed life in order to be, or seem, more successful and not be perceived as losers by others. And If they don't, many get depressed and unfulfilled.

Most of us are raised believing money is the most important thing in life. Obviously, you should have some money and not be in debt but in general if you can pay for the necessary things you should be fine. A 300k car looks amazing but if you could buy it, it would not make you more happy, perhaps a week or something. The only things money is good for is power and getting women. 'Power', as in that you could do whatever the hell you want, especially if you are your own boss and obviously getting women because they are even more wired to chase money.

Could you give any advice on how you're able to work 4 days a week? I'm such a good worker but I find after about 3-4 days I get extremely burnt out mentally. But I push myself because I can't fail. By the time the weekend comes I hide all day in my bed because I'm just drained.

I think my comment just got removed, so I am keeping it short. You don't want to remove all stress, you want to be smart on how to train your stress resilience. Because stress resistance is like a muscle. If you don't train it, it will become weaker and weaker. You will not have a stress free life, you will just be stressed out quicker.

I understand these videos are short and don't have room for deep discussions/disclaimers. But on the topic of living and life in general, in my opinion, should hold a disclaimer. - I think the outlook of a simple life is beautiful and definitely emphasises that quality of life is the better alternative than the marketed quantity of life. However, on the flip side it should not be dismissed that "simple" life does not mean having no kids, not having a sky-rocket career, not having a spouse, etc. - It's more so about what kind of simplicity you want and to KNOW that, so that you can live in a way which is not too complex and works FOR YOU. - So please do not draw these conclusions that "simple" means easy; yes, life will come with struggles, but it does not mean we cannot find solutions; ofcourse do not take on more than you can chew but make it easier for you to taste; that's all :) - Just make life easier where you can and if that does mean prohibiting/ ruling out certain things to suit you and how you live or want to live then that is fine as well as just keeping things an option. - Basically, just live the way you need to as opposed to the way society tells you how you are to want to live; if something doesn't fit for you, there is no pressure to take it. I don't mean to offend Stuart as a creator, but just thought I'd include this disclaimer, cuz everybody is different and not saying you don't acknowledge that, but I know your words can hold some weight even when there is no intention and this is the internet so disclaimers are needed. - Love the videos on this channel 🤍 what you do is great 🥺👍🏽.
