Cadences were provided by either the section leader or the percussion instructor. I only chose the order in which they were played.

One thing abt wt cadences it seems like thdy have a story to tell by the way the drums talk to each other

So....here's the thing. You have oreos, and then you have a generic oreo. There are some generic oreos that are really bad, there are some that are okay, and then there are some that are REALLY good. Like, you find them and even start comparing them to the oreos. But they're still not oreos. Oreos have perfected their recipe, they stick to it, and when variations like peanut butter oreos, mint oreos and holiday oreos revolve around that perfected recipe. I don't mean to use this analogy to insult Talladega because they're VERY good. I love how they have improved over the years and they're obviously not meaning to copy WT. However, WT was the first to establish that Memphis style of powerful aggressive chops outside of TN (TN State obviously gets first credit, since that's where they're stationed, but their style is different than WT's). Therefore, they get credit for being the originators of that style, so they will always have the upper hand. They've perfected their style, all of what they do has revolved around it for decades and it actually improves over the year. So to have a battle between them and a line that is influenced by them, to me, always puts the other line at a disadvantage. GREAT battle (I understand it's virtual) between two lines, but JSU gets it by default, even though I do see them as the more polished of the two. Again, I REALLY hope that this doesn't come off as hating because I don't mean for it to be. It's just that when I started following drumlines in high school, every single line was known for having their own style, signature cadences, and no one dared to try modeling their style after another, so that's what has been etched in my expectations. I'm not lamenting the similarities....just explaining the lense I see it from. I notice it without trying.

That being said: Snares- JSU: 10 Dega: 8 Tenors- JSU: 10 Dega: 8 Multi Tenors: JSU: 8 Dega: N/A Basses: JSU: 9 Dega: 8.5 Cymbals : JSU: 9 Dega: 9 Final score- JSU: 9.2, Dega: 8.6 Personal preference: 1. Degas tenors seem to sound too "empty" to me. Maybe it's the recordings, but they don't seem to add a "punch" to the middle voicing line. 2. I LOVE the sound produced by Dega's cymbals. It has a full bodied sound but still has that "shimmer." They're nicely polished as well, so that adds to the aesthetic. 3. JSU's cymbals honestly never "moved" me, however, I've recently come to rate them a 10 based on how well they play together. They write some very intricate parts and they're executed PERFECTLY with proper balance, so musically I think they're at the top of the chain. However, I've always wanted to see a little more concerning uniformity on the small details. Sometimes I still see variations when they go back to "rest position." (I don't know what they call it) Like some elbows are at different heights and even their cymbals aren't lined up with one another. Also, twirling style sometimes seems to be hit and miss during freestyling. I like to see one movement always leading to the next and I sometimes see contrary movements. However, I'm only being nitpicky because their drumline is so good, so I would be hard pressed to find something to say about the general rules of playing as a line.

Dega is a relatively young program and usually younger programs take their influence from more established ones and then write their material based on the style they're modelled after.
