Killarney has become one of my favourite destinations in northern Ontario. I was fortunate to be able to do a canoe trip this fall and explore 5 different lakes through a 58 km loop. Thanks to Kevin Callan for designing this beautiful loop in his book "Top 60 Canoe Routes of Ontario"!
We started our trip at George Lake, followed by a small portage to Freeland Lake. Then we paddled the extension of this lake until we reached the 455 meter portage connecting to Killarney Lake. Here is where we camped the first night. The campsite here had an amazing view to the La Cloche mountains and we were able to go for an evening paddle to see the sunset.
On our second day we headed towards Norway Lake, paddling the entirety of Killarney Lake followed by a long 1400 meter portage. It was absolutely worth it! Norway Lake is a magical place (I lost my GoPro here but that's ok)
and we experienced an amazing sunset.
On our third day we had an early start because we wanted to fit a hike to Little Heaven Lake and I'm so glad we did. This Lake is one of the highest in Ontario and there's a beautiful lookout once you're there. After our hike we continued portaging towards Kakakise Lake where we found another great campsite.
We knew that our final day was going to be the most physically challenging, but on top of that we got some rain... honestly it didn't bother us that much, it helped us to appreciate the park from a different perspective. We had to tackle a strenuous 2km portage from Kakakise Lake to Freeland Lake and then backtrack to George Lake. By the end of our trip we were so hungry and we didn't miss the chance to try some of the best fish and chips we've ever had! Killarney is a magical place and we will be back every year!
