Yes, some breeds of pit are beefier than the original american pit bull terrier, including the american bully, staffordshire terrier, etc. but there’s a difference between a muscular dog and a fat one. I had Akitas for decades. My last boy looked very like Kuma and people were definitely intimidated by him. However my lovely boy helped me look after orphan kittens, loved cats, horses and allowed himself to be used as a chew toy by foster puppies. I would still happily have Akitas however we started to foster and then adopt rescue dogs, we never had the right time bring an Akita back into the household. Now we take the dogs no one else wants, the old, the infirm, behaviour problems, but damn seeing Kuma brought tears to my eyes.

Thank you for putting that disclaimer at the front about how Akita's aren't the right dog for most owners, especially new ones. Had you not, lot of people would have just seen this beautiful dog and not known what they were getting themselves into if they decided to pick this breed for their next pooch. I've grown up with Akitas and have owned three in my lifetime it's always a challenge.They can be the most docile, loving dogs in the world, but without consistent training and hundreds of hours of continual work they can be dangerous to be around. They're one of the main breeds you need to teach bite inhibition as soon as possible. Because even a mild love nip from an Akita can have serious consequences and many of the puppies grow up naturally very mouthy. Not out of aggression but Akita's have a habit of using their mouths to navigate the world. For example, the second Akita I grew up with had a habit of taking your hand in his mouth and using it to gently lead you places in the house. It was cute, but only after literally hundreds of hours of work to soften his mouth and teach him how fragile human skin happened to be. We currently have an eighteen month rescue Akita named Remy and he's been a bit of a nightmare to work with. Not only is he very mouthy but he doesn't realize how strong he is either. These dogs top out at 120 pounds for the males and they're /all/ muscle. It's taken dozens of hours with expert trainers and constant experimenting with leashes and collars to find the right mix to keep him under control. Because while he's a sweetheart and would never hurt a fly, all it takes is for him to catch you off guard ONCE on a walk before he's literally dragging you halfway across the street. I wouldn't trade him or any of the other Akitas I've owned for the world, but I also cringe whenever I see people promoting Akitas to wider audiences without proper warnings. Are you prepared to constantly train your Akita throughout it's life? To put dozens to hundreds of hours in when they're still puppies to teach them bite inhibition? To take them out nearly every day to meet strangers and new animals so they remain nonaggressive towards other people and pets? And to then have them reach puberty and not know if all that work might go down the drain due to their raging hormones? If not, please for the sake of these amazing dogs look elsewhere for your next pooch. You're doing both the dog and yourself a disservice by not going in prepared.

Thank you. I was starting to get really annoyed by all the people smugly declaring this isn't a dog for noobs without giving a single reason as to why.
@SkiDaBird3 жыл бұрын
I know when my family adopted a GSP from the shelter there was an additional interview, extra paperwork, and a lot of verbal warnings. Badly trained GSPs are a nuisance, but not a safety issue because they just aren’t that big. Akita’s are amazing, but they really are 100+ pounds of exuberant muscle, and a fuckton of work to help the dog.
@CeruleanRogue3 жыл бұрын
@@Member.Berry. No problem, I was seeing a lot of people echoing the sentiment that they shouldn't be owned by newbies but not explaining /why/ so I wanted to add my own perspective. Every dog is an individual of course and there are some Akitas who do not need that much extensive training. They are however are the extreme EXCEPTION and I desperately want people to understand that before they take the plunge. You can tell Kuma's owners put in all the work to make their boy safe to be around and he is an exceptional example of the breed. If someone is willing to put in all that work however and learn to read their dog they will end up with an amazing companion. It's just that most people aren't willing to put in that work and end up letting their poor dog become a menace due to their negligence.

Absolutely correct. American soldiers based in Japan after WW2 fel in love with the breed and brought the first puppies and adult dogs to the States when returning home. As pets, not for hunting or any other reason. Unfortunately, very few purebred Akitas still excisted in Japan at that time. So, many Japanese owners crossbred them with other breeds and sold these puppies to the American soldiers. To keep a long story short, this eventually lead to 2 different type of Akitas: the Japanse and the American.
