An extremely lucky encounter and my first time seeing wild Killer Whales (or Orcas - whichever term you prefer). This is a hunt so if animal death or predation events make you squeamish this may not being the video for you.
This group of Killer Whales are known to the California Killer Whale Project as CA140B Louise, CA140B1 Stinger, CA140B2 Bee, CA 140B3 Buzz and CA23A2. Louise is the mother to Stinger, Bee and Buzz while CA23A2 is an unrelated whale from a different matriline that is known to travel with this group from time to time. All five are a part of the well known ecotype called Biggs/Transient which are famous for their whale hunts. The Biggs/Transient ecotype of Orca are specialized mammal hunters meaning they prey on seals, sea lions, dolphins and whales which can be hard for some to watch. They are one of three ecotypes that can be seen along the California coast with the other two being Residents (fish eaters) and Offshores (large fish and shark eaters).
Though this video is just shy of an hour in length we spent at least 6 hours with this group of Orcas before they finally left. The hunt itself lasted a couple of those hours with both sides exerting huge amounts of energy.
Thanks to Delaney, Ryan and Mark for letting me come along.
