Exactly my feeling. I think there's a Welsh word - hiraeth - that is sharper and more sadly longing than the English "nostalgia". It's a heartfelt yearning for a fondly remembered past that cuts deep and is indeed bittersweet. Poppies by Teardrop Explodes or Public Image have the same effect on me. They put me in an exact time and place where the world was full of possibilities and i was bursting with raw energy 😁

@@jye_24 The song completely captures the Zeitgeist of the later Cold War, the fear of a nucle*r Armageddon and the feeling of having been sent in as players into a drama we had never been part of writing or asked to be in. I remember those days and the song is indeed a time-capsule. "Heartshine" by Mother Love Bone (recorded in 1989), with a similar thundering riff and pounding drums, does something similar - also a brilliant song and to me that one is also about a generation, not just one guy's anguish. It doesn't get much better than this. It's one of the best crafted songs of all time and one of the best audio experiences of the 80's. I thank the Universe for me being born in 1961. When Killing Joke played at The Glider Room, Dee Why Hotel in the mid- 80's the sound engineer had everything tirned up to eleven, probably louder. The Bass was causing much discomfort to the people in the packed room. Big tough, tattooed guys were leaving the venue because the excruciating volume was intolerable. My existence was like a Clash song " Should I Stay or Should I go. I stayed, because I didn't want to miss my only chance to see this band LIVE. Looking around the room to see the crowd singing along with passion to EIGHTIES, was worth the price of admission. Great band!!!!!

Whoa that's crazy and beautiful to read. Killing Joke has had a lot of great material of 40 years, very diverse but bluntly put...a sort of punk period but with synth and some good writing, then came this era which was very underrated by fans at the time...Night Time (1985) and Brighter Than a Thousand Suns (1986) may be to your taste; especially the former since Love Like Blood is on it. From there it got more progy and then they got heavier, a bit industrial, not full on metal to my metal attuned ears but that's what music journalists will say : ) ha. Democracy (1996) is also great, took awhile to click. But for anyone reading Night Time is really work it start to finish, it was the bridge between the first big style jump. Glad I finally got into them in the past few years after numerous encounters; I had become so focused on singles and then life turned more introspective. A lot of people only like one or two albums because they can be so different in terms of face value aesthetic i.e. "rebellious uk punk" "new wave" "industrial" "shoegaze" all styles a good band can perform as can a skilled theater actor; playing a variety of roles with a pathos that is still their own. P.S. I sometimes read my uncle's old diaries and it is an amazing connection to have their voice in your head again. Be well friend.

For someone who grew up listening to the music of the '60s this would've been incredibly futuristic and almost completely alien. The musicians at the time would've known they were breaking new ground with the technology available to them, especially with synths and new production techniques. The newly-available tech influenced and inspired how the songs were written and recorded. Plus of course the rock and punk music of the '70s that the members of bands like Killing Joke would've grown up listening to. The Fixx is another band that springs to mind. It's a snapshot in time that can't be replicated again. Which isn't to say we can't still record new music like this. But it's arguably more difficult now because the same inspirations aren't there.

I remember hearing this for the first time & thinking this was the most unique amazing song I’d ever heard. Fast fwd almost 40yrs and I feel pretty good about saying I was right. Not many songs out there that could be released in 1985 or 2023 and still be a monster, this is definitely one. I’ll check back when I retire and guarantee it’s still a jam.

I am proud to say that when this track was first released over 37 years ago, I was around and purchased this album on Vinyl. Killing Joke was my introduction to many great acts to follow like The Cure.. I am 52 years old now and I will never forget great tracks like this.

Probably one of the best rock songs ever. I never tire of listening to it. As a band they may not have longevity of Led Zep or Sabbath but this one track puts them in my 'Desert Island Discs' list.
@wanstedt0138 Жыл бұрын
They have put out 30 albums not including live and compilation albums. Double Led Zeppelin’s output and more than Sabbath as well.

@@wanstedt0138 This may be an unpopular opinion. But I believe that bands/artists should make *less* music , not more.
@VIMaggotVIBrainzVI Жыл бұрын
@@APPEALtoFEAR I agree with you in many cases, but Killing Joke has been stunningly consistent over the course of their entire discography so far (barring a minor misstep into cheesy synth-pop in the late 80s). They've gone through so many stylistic phases but still manage to maintain the essence of their signature sound.

I don't think I've ever heard bass and scraped guitar more in unison than on this song. Drum sound incredible. Love the piano strikes. Great vocal production.

I had the good fortune to see KJ live at Glasgow Tiffanys back in 1982, as a wee plukey -faced 16y.o. punk rocker! Although not the most mobile frontman ever to have graced a Stage, Jaz did have a very commanding Stage presence, and voice that certainly delivered the message and held the attention,in a termedously terrifying way, Less was very definitely more, just a lick of war-paint/make-up and some silent screams,amidst his powerful vocals ,accompanied by sporadic yet timely hand gestures, his raised clenched fist for example, did the job. Then again, i guess he didnt have to move around the stage much in any case, as the sheer energy and blissful aural assault generated by the Band's terrific music , also delivered /done the job, and some.

I've just stumbled on the terrible news that Geordie has passed away. He's only 2 years older than me. RIP mate. Great guitar work from Geordie over the decades. His family can be proud. I'll be singing or internally shouting "Eighties" all day now. Loudest and most painful gig I went to was "KILLING JOKE" at a place in Dee Why, Sydney on the beautiful Northern Beaches. The Venue was called The Glider Room. It was so loud that people were leaving the Venue.
