The same happened to my beautiful country of Yugoslavia that was destroyed by America more than three decades... provoked war between left ruins and nestled hatred between people who lived in harmony and respect... until today they’ve been living in unseen poverty and unrest... that’s America, hope God is watching...

But he tells a black and white story. Afghanistan is not as simple as he told us.Communism in Afghamistsn was very good and Western influence was very bad. Too simple and not true. When Amerika did spend Billions of Dollar at the time of NATO Intervention, the Pashtun Government was very corrupt. They also worked together with TALIBANS.I.S. and Taliban destroyed most schools, even Hospitals and Shiitic Moschee. Aafganian History is not that simple as here told.😢

@ Did you capture simplicity from his talk? How so? To me it sounded as complex as it is. However, he elucidated a lot of facts that are hidden in the mainstream media propaganda. Of course, in a Marxist perspective because that's who he is, but it was far from simple to me. He does not use words such as bad or mean, right, or wrong. This is our interpretation based on the facts, on the materialism of the situation.

If West destroyed the Left from Afghanistan , then what about now. There are not even undercurrents of left movement in Afghan society. The Left that existed before was oppressive and tried to suppress religion. That is also the reason there is no strong leftist movement in Muslim countries. Islamic teachings are very much anti Left😏

Rania Khalek could hardly be better: deeply and thoroughly informed, irrepressible personality, a joy to hear and see. And Vijay Prashad has en encyclopedic knowledge of history -- suppressed, astonishing history, going back to the 1920s. We learn, for example, * that Lenin, in the 1918 Treaty of Brest Litovsk, called for Iran and Afghanistan to remain independent * that the 1923 Constitution of King Amanullah called for men and women to be treated equally * that Lenin and King Amanullah were on friendly terms * that all roads in Kabul were paved by the Soviets in the 1950s * that four women, one a communist, were elected to the parliament in 1965 * that the April Revolution (1978) built on the liberal principles in the existing Afghan constitution * that the communists began a large-scale literacy campaign in 1978 * that literacy workers were murdered by the U.S.-backed Mujahedin * that Soviet archives show that the Soviet leaders and the KGB opposed direct involvement in Afghanistan, * that the Soviets were swayed by fear that the CIA would create a bloodbath similar to that in Chile (1973) and that in Indonesia (1965) * that most of the fighting against the U.S. Mujahedin cut-throats was done by the Afghan Army, not by the Soviets * that the communist reformist government in Kabul survived till 1996 Only one quibble: 9/11. There is actually no evidence that Osaama bin Laden (CIA handle "Tim Osman") was involved, and subsequent U.S. support for Al Qaeda in Iraq and Syria casts serious doubt on the official 9/11 narrative. Rejecting this narrative may be taboo, nonetheless.

I want to echo the comment of @stephenmorrell6669: > The only 'far left' international tendency to support the Soviet intervention was the International Spartacist Tendency. Their headlines read "Hail Red Army in Afghanistan", and all the other so-called 'far left' groups (eg, ISO, etc) and the Maoists howled in opposition to the intervention and in support for the imperialists and their mujahideen 'freedom fighters'.

Some of what he shared was actually eye opening especially the part in which explained how involved Pakistan, the Saudi and the US were in the creation of the Mudjaheddin and the subsequent Taliban of today. What Was extremely shocking was the revelation about the killing of literacy workers just so that Afghanistans Evolution would be hampered. Imagine Afghanistan today if that never happened?? Still halfway through the video. So far pretty interesting, I love that they tried to bring in another perspective of reality about the Soviet-Afghan war which I think most people have never heard of and a lot of points being said are true. However, I think they missed some nuances and other details untold in their convo here. The communist cause of the new DR Afghanistan government, while certainly genuine, was actually failed to build and maintain a solid foundation for socialism to develop. It was still a premature government which was never fully prepared and anticipated the real danger of the Mujahideen forces and its influence over the, for example some probably have heard often of achievements like being said here 23:29 but the reality is that they only relatively succeed to socialize smaller portion of Afghanistan society while struggled to implement the reform over the larger society living in the rural region, who were *mostly* and strongly traditionalists and conservative muslims (which very often led to many local disputes and oppositions) and for this reason, the Mujahideen were a lot more successful in earning a popular trust and support because of the religion dogmatism and radical indoctrination approach. The government also did significant errors in their land reform policy which only caused confusion and opposition from the peasants because it simply didn't work and the government didn't have proper understanding of it. Because of it, DR Afghanistan became economically stagnant while highly dependent upon Soviet aids and supports. The assessment that the USSR was carrying out a social imperialism does appear to be closer to the truth. While the decision for them to intervene the region was out of a very good intention, in practice it was an excessive militaristic support and aid to the DR Afghanistan forces and the people, and they lacked proper strategy and tactic to effectively counter and eliminate the Mujahideen forces' attacks and influences which often led to excess of deaths from innocents and local resistances who were being made use of the Mujahideen forces as a diversion and deception. On the other hand, we often heard that the US, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan were the culprit behind those Mujahideen Islamist-extremist forces, but what's left out from this claim is the other major player which also aligned quiet closely with US: China.
@GuyWhoLikesTheSnarkies1435
@GuyWhoLikesTheSnarkies1435 3 жыл бұрын
Under Deng Xiaoping leadership and reform policy, China was geopolitically more aligned to the US, thanks to the CIA and corporate agents implanted inside both the government and the party bodies. And because of this, China' foreign policy was somewhat pro-US too, combined with their still-bitter relationship with USSR, this led to their full supports and advocacy for the Mujahideen forces.. by literally promoting the radical Salafist thought all across Southern Xinjiang while having the PLA trained and armed thousands of volunteering Uygurs on their own as Mujahideen forces too, ready to fight against Soviet forces in Afghanistan (this is real, by the end of 80s many Uygurs had to live under strict "Shari'a" law and policy). All in all, both USSR and DR Afghanistan were overwhelmed to face this unorthodox war against Mujahideen forces with combination of sophisticated US military armaments and combat vehicles, full supports from multiple countries and their asymmetric, guerrilla/insurgence warfare strategy.

I remember Afghanistan where women of Afghanistan in big cities used to go to Universities and colleges, worked as doctors, soldiers in the armed forces wore western attire. We as student in Pakistan used to go to Afghanistan for Summer vacation buy electronic goods. Then came US to train and arm the illiterate villagers and incited them to rise up against the infidel communist government that had invited Soviet Union to help them take care of the U.S. supported “Mujahideen”. Osama binLaden was an ally of US in that campaign. Now they proudly say they killed Osama and his supporters the Al Qaeda and Taliban a.k.a. Mujahideen.

Actually, this video is partially wrong. YES, the Mujahideen DID become the Taliban. Refugees in Pakistan did play a major role, but the Taliban itself was a merger of the two largest factions of the Mujahideen: Hezb e Islami Khalis and the Haqqani network, backed up by the Arab-dominated "Afghan Services Bureau" led by a certain Osama Bin Laden. ALL Taliban leaders previously fought in the 80s Jihad against the Soviets.

This is hands-down one of the best conversations on this topic I've heard. One thing I never hear anyone mention, though, is the fact that the Taliban grew stronger over the last 20 years. In fact, they were (and still are) at their peak numbers before the peace deal was even struck. In other words, it could be argued that a) we've been empowering the Taliban since the 80's even when we were trying to do the exact opposite and b) our war in Afghanistan was just as much, if not more so, to blame for the Taliban take-over as the withdrawal.

47:00 - Why did the U.S. withdraw from Afghanistan? I think a better answer is this: it has been rumored that Afghanistan was a money and weapons laundering operation, and that is why the U.S. was involved there for so long. While in Afghanistan, the U.S. military were fighting the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, and U.S. soldiers were being killed and wounded, and this situation did nothing to weaken Russia. By moving their money and weapons laundering operation from Afghanistan to Ukraine, they continue to get those benefits, but now Ukrainians are being killed, instead of U.S. soldiers, they get the added benefit of weakening Russia, and they get to loot Ukraine's resources in the process.

@@harshmishra3214Here we go again with the bigoted sectarianism that so benefitted Afghanistan -not! By the way, just to correct your incorrect information, King Amanullah Khan, Daud Khan, Taraki, etc, all these progressive people mentioned by Prashad are Pashtuns. The non-progressive Rabani and Massud he mentioned are non-Pashtun. You can have all kinds of people among all ethnic backgrounds. But people like you who foster bigoted sectarianism (usually in the form of hate of Pashtuns) and thereby destroy the country's unity are despicable. This explains why so many Afghans actually living in AFG, as opposed to the diaspora, support the current govt (Taliban) because they focus on unity by all Afghans and not differences in ethnic or religious groups although we are told otherwise.

Great conversation. In general, the host could work a bit on diminishing exaltation and not going into comments about some events that are not historically explained by facts. All in all, this channel stands out in quality of the content. The host does a great job, which might be even better by avoiding diluting the main topic of the video with comments about non proven to be true cause/consequence of some events.

This was a wonderful listen. Such a rich, diverse history. Sadly there is always interference as powerful nation states make moves for their benefit even if it erodes the sovereignty, peace, prosperity. Hopefully the Afghan people persevere and rise to the point where they could genuinely decide their future themselves.

Although a tragic story of barbarity by most primitive spectrum of Afghan society borne, bred and brought up by socalled civilized US - led " liberal" Western colonialists , Vijaya Prashad has put ocean of wisdom about Afghanistan´s incredibly courageous mission for advancement and progress of the country within a barrel, as is said: गागर में सागर. Am overwhelmed by Vijaya s presentation on the subjecst surpassing any adjectives of appreciation! Am in contact with him through his Twitter messages which I highly admire! Great thanks to you both for this superb conversation from an 89 oldy from Nepal!!🇳🇵

The "Left", if were real, SHOULD HAVE gone all out in suport of the PDPA regime - and certainly the Soviet fraternal intervention. I didn't see that. Take just one example, the "Womens Movement" in the West, on campus, etc - Many jumped in to condemn the USSR - while, obviously, the "Women Question" was central to the conflic in Afghanistan - my point is, there needs to be some self criticism on the Left in the West. Maybe, just DO or Say NOTHING - rather than jump in on the WRONG SIDE.

We Americans' should grow up and stop with feeling that our government is a source for good. Democrat or Republican. We are and have been a source for great harm and suffering. Why not? We've come to think that the one % is basically a natural result of superior people receiving their just compensation. This clip is more important than anything on our common media. Thank you.

Afghan was never socialist 😂 these people are living in a fairy tale. Leftism or communism would have never succeeded in Afghanistan even if the western powers and the soviets didnt meddle in their business. Afghanistan has always been relatively conservative, what these American leftists need to understand is that we DONT want liberalism in the middle east. Keep the plague and disease of liberalism to yourself.

One thing he missed is the communist government of Afghanistan ended in 1992 not in 1996 as he mentions @58:16. That is when the Mujahideen took over and Najibullah took refuge at the UN office. In 1994 the Taliban appeared and took overthrow the Mujahideen and took Kabul in 1996 and that is when they took Dr. Najibullah out of the UN compound and killed him (along with his brother who was visiting him from the US at the time).
