Kilt Tips | How To Clean A Kilt

In this video, I will discuss an easy way to properly clean a kilt at home. Never take your kilt to a dry cleaner, on top of the additional expense of dry cleaning, you are causing unnecessary damage and wear on the kilt material by having it dry cleaned which will shorten the life of the investment you have made in your kilt.
This is a simple method that does a very good job of cleaning your kilt right in your home and protects your investment.
If there is enough interest in the topic, I will create a step by step video showing how to clean your kilt in this manner at home.

My father who was in the black watch gave me some advice about how the soldiers looked after their kilts. My father said that when their kilts were losing their " sharpness of pleat " the soldiers would use very thin shavings of carbolic soap ,and place them on the inside of the pleat at the inner crease and use a press or heavy iron to smooth out the pleat ,and the soap would act like a glue giving a sharp seam, this not only flattened and pressed the pleat but the carbolic kept the fleas , moths and the likes away. I was a dancer , also my daughter and grand daughter, I used this method all the time and it never failed. I also used your way of cleaning the kilts. Now I have seen better days but still involve myself with the tartan but now by waulking the tweed and Gaelic songs. Dude, very informative and helpful! My kilt came out spectacular! Also, I learned about removing "piling" with a safety razor. My kilt looks like new! And smells great. Yay!

Great, glad it worked for you. Removing pilling can be done with a safety razor if you are very careful. I prefer to use a battery operated razor designed just for removing piling from fabric. It has a safety screen over the blades to make sure you can’t slip and mess up, lol. You can find them at Walmart or just about anywhere that sells ironing supplies.

I make them from leftover leather scraps from making my sporrans and belts. The first one I had I bought from Etsy, but after seeing how extremely easy they were to make, I have been making my own ever since.

Why not Woolite if it is made for wool? Isn't it gentle so it doesn't damage it either?

Woolite isn't as gentle on wool as they lead you to believe; it is also harder to completely rinse out than a baby shampoo is, not to mention the added cost of Woolite over shampoo. Woolite is what I started out using at first, but I started seeing damage over time to the leather straps which are not an issue with the shampoo.

@@jeremykrall1694 Its been a few years since I made any videos, but I am trying to get everything set back up so I can start making them again. Patience is the key to the pipe, along with getting it packed properly. If it is packed too tightly, or too loosely, it will burn out and require relighting. Patience and practice.
